Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Poor renovations at Blackhorse
I’ve been playing blackhorse 2 to 3 times a year for over 25 years . The drainage renovations made about 15 years ago have ruined the play at blackhorse. The drainage area at each green creates a collection area below the green that unfairly affects play . The Lady paired with us hit a putt from back of the green that should have stopped 2 feet past the hole rolled 15 more feet off the green into the collection area . Blackhorse has been my favorite until the drainage renovations were made . I will no longer play it .
lovely
Staff so friendly and helpful, got paired with a really nice local gentleman, Bill.
Great conditions on a perfect weather day for golf
Couldn't have asked for better weather and also course conditions for the end of November. Greens were FIRM which is what I prefer and the course was in very good shape.
Accuracy in approaches
Went out as a single about 8 on a gloriously clear and wind-free morning. The course has quite an open feeling, often affording views of the ocean and other holes.
Off the tee this is not a difficult course except for the many fairway bunkers and tendency for shots to roll into unexpected spots due to the firm fairways.
The course defends itself well on approach shots, chips, and putts. The greens are hard, fast, and most have tiers or other interesting slopes. The traps and greens are in excellent condition. I found them challenging but always fair.
The green fees included a cart and small bag of range balls. The cart does not have GPS but there are lots of yardage markers in the fairways.
The person in the clubhouse was friendly and helpful. I would love to play here again.
Great Value
Very nice golf course! For the amount of money we paid through golfnow HOT DEAL it’s a great value……….
Awesome
Played Bayonet last year and black horse this time. Both are great courses.
Second chance.
I love golf and golf courses. When done right a golf course is a work of art.
I played Black Horse’s sister course Bayonet a couple weeks ago and have now come away disappointed in both experiences.
Bayonet’s tee boxes were in horrible condition, the fairways were acceptable with greens bordering on unplayable. Rock hard and unaccepting of even the best approach and if you draw the ball back from the flag you are using your wedge again.
I’m a 13 handicap for reference purposes, live locally and love the area courses. It is my understanding that Troon is taking over the courses and I look forward to them bringing a unique layout up to par.
Great first time!
No complaints here! Tough reads on greens first time out. Fast too! Lots of lawn clipping clumps on greens, but I never cleaned mine either! Definite re-play
PW from the Bay Araea
Fairways were rougher t6han most times I have played there. Greens too fast for recreational play, fine for tournament but will scare away the average golfer. It took me 12 holes to adjust to the fast pace of greens and now I will need to readjust going beck to average public course speed of greens.
All that said I love the courses.
Blackhorse redux
Fine layout. Greens condition excellent however they were very very slow. Fairways need grooming. Traps very good. Not always fair as there are funny and quirky little cut outs that make hitting a shot near impossible. Fun to play.
Blackhorse 11/5/21
One of my favorite courses to play in California. Club selection is extremely important. Plan where you need to land your shot because that will be the difference between a birdie or boogie. Beautiful views throughout. Maintenance crew is constantly improving this course which will make Bayonet and Blackhorse just as rewarding as Pebble Beach and Spyglass duo. A must play. Practice facilities and food are superb. Hats off to extremely friendly staff. Put these courses on your list to play.
Black Horse Golf Course
An excellent test of your golf game. Hard, fast greens with plenty of undulations. Nice layout without the use of water. Tough rough—thick. You need course knowledge in order to stay out of trouble. I had a good time. I’ll be back for sure.
We had 3 women in front of us & even though we were a two some, they could of cared less - other than that, we had a great time
Must play
Great layout, lots of strategic bunkers and very fast undulating greens.
Black Horse
Clean tee boxes and fairways. Firm and fast greens. Most with several levels which makes approach shots key. Layout with good variety: several downhill drives, some doglegs, one classic risk-reward 90 deg dog leg right. Overall great experience.
