Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Nice course, fast greens
This is the first time I played Black Horse, have played Bayonet once before. We found the course to be in good shape. It was an afternoon tee time so it was a bit windy and overcast at first but by the time we got to the last 3-4 holes the sun was out and it was nice. As for the course, it was COVID-19 timing but everything was in great shape. We found the greens to be a bit fast which was challenging since many of the greens are undulating but a good challenge. I'd highly recommend the course.
Challenging!
Excellent! Need to improve signage
Between holes!
Great challenging course
My wife and i had a great time. We played with a kid who was a scratch golfer and plays for Fresno State U. The course is in good shape and challenging for us. Jack, our playing partner, had a 1 over par and said he really loved both courses. The only thing that could be improved on is directions around the course. If you had never played there before, it got confusing on several holes where to go for the next tee.
Blackhorse
Perfect day. Course in a lovely condition.
Had a great time
I love the courses, but........
The courses at Black Horse/Bayonet are excellent. I've played here many times. However, the conditions were the worst I've every seen it here. Tee boxes pretty beat up. Fairways are very thin with bare spots. Greens are a little bumpy and much slower than usual. I was very disappointed paying the full NGCA rack rate of $110. Maybe at half price the below average conditions (for this course) wouldn't bother me. Unless you are paying less than $65, I wouldn't recommend playing here now.
Black Horse
Be ready for fast and undulating greens. The only down side is with no one fixing divots there are a lot in fairways
A real test of golf
Its been a while since I last played Blackhorse and its as tough as I remembered. Conditions were very good by it required you to hit fairways and the right part of the greens. Few flat lies even on the fairways. This is a thinking course, to play well you have to puick the places to miss. Add in some breeze from the ocean and you'll be usung all you mental faculties as well. There is much to contend with here including elevation changes, sloping fast greens with several false fronts and mature Monterey Cypress. All in all a true test of your game. A most enjoyable course for those that want to test their game. If you just want to wack the ball, head down the hill to Monterey Pines.
Great experience!
Quick & easy check in process. Friendly & positive staff. Will definitely play again. Views are great!
Windy, Tough and one hole so under repair it should have been closed.
We played Blackhorse. Course is in good condition. But is under repair in some spots.
Was a bit frustrated when I lost a ball in a pile of cut tree limbs. Happened once to me and once to my playing partner. The was a entire crew in a ditch in front of one green who didn’t move or turn off their radios when we approached. They should have closed the hole.
No Marshalls to move slow play. And no sandwiches in the service cart, which is rough because the course doesn’t return to the clubhouse on the turn. All the pins were tucked in corners in positions sometimes so difficult it was laughable especially on a windy day.
Closed a par 3 but was not advised
Except for not telling me the hole was close and playing 96 years, all was fine.
Poor conditions, disappointing compared to previous experience.
The Blackhorse Golf course is a very difficult layout. It was rebuilt about 5 years ago and the designer made many of the greens impossible. Way to many greens are designed so that only a third of the green should ever have a pin placement. In addition the greens were so dry that there was hardly any grass on them, that means when you hit a ball to the middle of a green it can roll backwards off the green and 30 yards down the hill, especially since the fairways are so incredibly dry its difficult to keep the ball on the fairway, and more difficult to hit a perfect shot off the equivalent of hard-pan in the middle of the fairway. This course is in dire need of water. How do you enjoy a course that is so difficult in the first place and conditions make it impossible to score when you hit great shots.
