Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course

About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Beautiful setting
Beautiful area and setting. Greens are in great shape. Very fast with large breaks. Fairways are pretty beat up; very spotty and worn.
COVID is not helping here
Staff was great, greens were firm and clean (as expected) and the weather was 68 and foggy as expected. The best part of the course besides the greens was the secondary rough! Was lush and tough, but fair. The fairways were mediocre at best and the tee boxes were not good on most holes. Can’t really rate the bunkers with the “no rakes” rule in order. The people there are great, but without the after-round cocktail and sandwich, the $116 price was a little steep. I will definitely go back after the COVID restrictions lift, but not before at those prices.
One of my favorite in the Monterey area
Bayonet and Blackhorse are 2 of my favorite courses in the Monterey area. Great value and very challenging.
Very Difficult Greens, beautiful course

As Good as it Gets!!!
Played Blackhorse and absoultey loved it.Tee time 8AM an we had heavy drizzle first three holes. Once that cleared it was great playing. Staff was great, the starter gave a heads up on the green interstices and he was spot on. Great driving range, course was in excellent shape (haven't seen better). Great layout with ocean views. "A MUST PLAY IF YOUR IN MONTEREY"!!! 5Star all the way....!
Beautifully Tough
Narrow fairways, thick lush rough and undulating greens. Short but very challenging.
Blackhorse starter is a total chump
The starter is a total hard-o who looks for confrontation. Our tee time was at 2:20 and we were waiting for the bartender for a couple minutes and ended up getting up to the starter at 2:24. The man gave away our tee time to the 2:35 group who was walking while we were in carts and totally tried to lecture us. Have your bartender at the bar ready if you’re gonna try and lecture a threesome with two men over 60 in it for being less than 5 minutes late.

Not as good as usual
They are doing a lot of work in Blackhorse right now. It isn’t as nice as usual and the pace was too slow today.
Nice course, fast greens
This is the first time I played Black Horse, have played Bayonet once before. We found the course to be in good shape. It was an afternoon tee time so it was a bit windy and overcast at first but by the time we got to the last 3-4 holes the sun was out and it was nice. As for the course, it was COVID-19 timing but everything was in great shape. We found the greens to be a bit fast which was challenging since many of the greens are undulating but a good challenge. I'd highly recommend the course.
