A little dark, but black bear in a dark tree, hole # 6...appropriate for Black Bear Golf Club! Photo submitted by relivgolfers on 09/29/2013
Fairways are good greens are not.
This course is unique and fun to play. Except the 18th hole. It’s a lousy finishing hole and it just seems they were confused and didn’t know what to do with it. Suggest just build a couple nice tee boxes and make it a par three with a shot over the water. Otherwise has some nice holes. The fairways actually had grass on them which is more than I can say for many of the Florida courses we have played. The greens though were really slow and need to be cut or something. Pace of play was great and all in all it was an enjoyable round.
Course conditions could not be worse
I’ve played blackbear well over 100 times. It was always a great course to play. Now the course is virtually unplayable. The fairways are in terrible shape and the greens are inundated with weeds. There is no smooth putt anywhere and very hard to score. This course is difficult with good conditions.
Truly challenging and different
This course was an amazing surprise. It is the most undulating and challenging course I have played in the Florida, Orlando area. With postage stamp sized greens and tight layout it was great fun.
The course overall was not in it’s best condition when I played, winter cold spell had prevented work, but still wonderful and frustrating fun.
Cold weather has been a factor
Greens were terrible - cold weather and unwanted growth made the greens next to impossible to putt. Fairways / rough typical winter season conditions very playable! Staff was very professional and friendly
Black Bear
If misery loves company, Black Bear has plenty of company. The drought and frost has hurt most of the central Florida courses and Black Bears suffers with all the rest of the dried up and burned up courses. That being said there is little can be done about the grass.......tees, fairways and greens are suffering. What bothered me was little or nothing is being done about the problems that can be addressed. The starter shack is in poor repair and needs paint. The cart paths have too many holes and bumps. The bunkers need work and some had no rakes. You can't change the weather but there are other things to be addressed
disappointed
We've played the Bear many times over the
years. Very disappointed with the condition of
the greens. Slow, bumpy. Little clumps of grass on the greens very poor to putt.
Very unique for Florida
This golf course is very unique and the fact that it is lined with Hill everywhere lots of different elevation which we typically don’t have here. Most places are very flat. The pro shop was full of supplies in goodies. The bar was nice clean and active. I’ll definitely be back. It was one of my favorite spots that I have played. If there was any downfall, the greens were a bit bumpy but this time of year I would expect that.
Poor Condition
The greens are in poor condition., fairways not much better. We ended up leaving after a few holes. I get with the freeze, it presents challenges but charge for a round of golf accordingly and maybe let people know. Another golfer approached me and said he was never coming back. Didn’t understand why until we got out there. Ended up playing elsewhere with playable greens.
Disappointed
Fairway good.
Greens full of poa. If u like PLAYING PLINKO on the greens, go to Black bear. I’ve played golf for 55 years. Never saw a layout like this. I wouldn’t bury my worst friend there.
disappointing pete dye course eustis fl
fairways were dormant and bare in spots- greens had a lot of weeds and crab grass . some bunkers didn’t have rakes.
It appears to be uncared for
Pete Diabolical
Great layout, elevation changes and smaller greens. Only negative was some poa or weeds showing up on the greens
Needs TLC
Black Bear is such a nice course. Unfortunately the greens are far from optimal, too much crab grass and bumpy making it difficult to make putts. I hope management is able to bring them back because the layout is gorgeous. Fingers crossed..
A link course
The layout is ok for a link course, the green is not good, rest course condition is just average
Black bear
Finishing hole leaves a bad taste. Blind layup tee shot to long approach over water. Played into a 20 mph wind. Not fun.
