A little dark, but black bear in a dark tree, hole # 6...appropriate for Black Bear Golf Club! Photo submitted by relivgolfers on 09/29/2013
Fun course
The photos on the website don’t begin to show off the terrain of this fun course. There are some serious mounds and dips, particularly on the first few holes. That uniqueness made for a very enjoyable round. I’m an intermediate player and my wife has played for only two years, but we both loved it. The forward tee boxes are way up. I felt like she wasn’t getting her money’s worth, but she enjoyed the shorter distances. The course was in very good shape. It is pretty wide open and I don’t recall water coming into play on any holes except the last one, which was perfect for us as it was our first time out since it got cold in New Hampshire.
For some reason, the driving range was closed. We had tee times just after 2:00 when the rates dropped to their lowest, but were ready to head out by 1:30 and they had no problem with us going early. There is no beverage cart. Thankfully our beverage bags were full of adult beverages, which no one paid any attention to. I would highly recommend this course and expect to be back.
Challenging Course
I think this is the 4th time playing Black Bear over the past few years. Course is quite challenging. Some of the sand traps appear to be not well maintained and some greens had some patches of weed although cut short enough that this was not an issue. Overall I would say this is not really a course for beginners.
Well Worth the Drive
Way overpriced and poor condition
I played Black Bear because it has always been in great condition. No more. Many of the fairways were sketchy. The bunkers had very heavy sand, but they did have sand. The greens were hit and miss with bumps and bare spots. To top it off, when we did not have anyone pushing us (we only saw the group behind a couple of times after letting a twosome through) the ranger told us to pick up the pace since we were "thirty minutes behind pace." That was uncalled for, and when we left 18, after cleaning up our stuff, rearranging our bags, and so on, that group hadn't yet reached the green on 17.
Nice course, good value.
Everything was OK. Clubhouse was helpful and friendly.
Typical Pete Dye course with some traps and obstacles, elevation changes, and small, somewhat challenging greens. Have played there several times over the years and will return on my next visit to the area.
Greens were very fast and smooth
For the first time in a while, the greens were very nice. That was the only complaint I had previously.
Rude Pro Shop/Cart Guy
This is a golf course in need of money obviously! Pro Shop / Cart idiot told me I couldn't hit golf balls on the range unless I bought them at the Pro Shop. A range is for hitting golf balls and no where is what he said written. So over what was the equivalent to a small bucket of balls this guy thought all the future green fees that this course now lost from me and all the future lost green fees from people in the multiple golf groups I'm posting this in and from people that read this and don't play in protest of being nickel and died over a small bucket of balls. All that future profit for the course over a small bucket of balls. It's that small minded thinking that has that dude working in a pro shop making minimum wage. Won't ever set foot on the property again and will continue to tell people not to play Black Bear. Hope it was worth it over a small bucket of range balls!
Always in great shape
Black bear has a great layout. Definitely challenges your short game. Greens are small and fast. Pace of play never an issue. Staff always friendly and efficient. Ine of my favorite courses.
Not Worth the $
For the $80 price tag you would expect a lot more from this place. It used to be a gem. The fairways are ok on some of the holes but most have large bare spots that leave you hitting off of the same dirt that in your backyard. The rough and sand traps are just flat out neglected. The greens are bumpy with weeds and most have bare dirt areas as well (or green paint). The people are nice and the facilities are good, but it’s is evident not much is going back into this course. Disappointing to say the least. Its a decent muni at best. Really surprised by the overly positive reviews of the course conditions.
The overly positive reviews are the members and locals. Do they really think they are fooling anyone?
Challenging course in good shape
The course is good, greens are rolling true, fairways are good. Challenging greens, as they are elevated, small, angled for small targets, make sure you have your distances. We had a windy day, a bit more challenging, but was fun to play.
Lousy
Trash conditions. If I knew beforehand that you can upload photos to your review, I would have taken pictures to show you the greens and you wouldn’t expect to pay more than $20 to play this dog track. They’re a sloppy mix of bare spots and weeds. The bunkers have mostly been abandoned and the fairways fade nicely into packed dirt bare spots. A 4-wheel drive Silverado couldn’t damage this course much worse than the grounds crew already has. The clubhouse restaurant is pretty nice though, just not the golf course.
You sound like the guy who wants to walk on the range, look around for free balls, walk out onto the range to scrounge some more balls while people are literally hitting, then complain when confronted... LMAO
No-one needs or wants your type at their course, literally no-one.
