A little dark, but black bear in a dark tree, hole # 6...appropriate for Black Bear Golf Club! Photo submitted by relivgolfers on 09/29/2013
Spot on
This is the type of course you come to if you want to challenge your game. The course is HILLY (especially for Florida) and the greens long and narrow. Thank God this course is in good shape (meaning you actually have grass to play off) because course management is a definite! The pro shop is well stocked and the bar/restaurant is a great place to rehash the round. All personnel we've run into have been very pleasant and personable. This course has become one of our favorites in the area.
Great curse
I would recommend this course very beautiful surrounding area. I recommended highly challenging you need to know how to play golf there I’m a 10 handicap
Shot a 85 from the wt tee box I’ll give a 4 for this Course
Love this golf course ❤️🫶❤️
Potential….
This course has tons of potential! The price was a bit high considering the condition of a few of the greens, most traps and a few ground under repair spots. It has a Phenomenal layout, and hills, and small fast greens, but it’s just not as pristine as the price would have you think…the off road path to the range was a bit ehhhh municipal.
Probably will not be back, but would recommend it for someone to play, and Sandy played it, it’s a very interesting course in central Florida. The staff inside was exceptional though! Heathere was an awesome bartender and waitress, and the food was delicious! I would love to see the superintendent get the budget he deserves to turn this place into a real gem!
Fun layout
Very fun layout for a florida course, nice and hilly. Greens, fairways, and tees were in good shape. Bunkers and rough were a mixed bag. Ruthless false fronts and side hills on a majority of greens made it a good challenge. Drove an hour to play there and would do it again, mainly because despite a full course, pace of play was great.
Course needs some work
Greens were sketchy and inconsistent. Fairways were good along with the tee boxes. Sand traps need some fresh fluffy sand. I did get out a half hour early and grateful for that. Rates are going to have to drop before I come back out and the areas that need addressing corrected.
Fun course
The photos on the website don’t begin to show off the terrain of this fun course. There are some serious mounds and dips, particularly on the first few holes. That uniqueness made for a very enjoyable round. I’m an intermediate player and my wife has played for only two years, but we both loved it. The forward tee boxes are way up. I felt like she wasn’t getting her money’s worth, but she enjoyed the shorter distances. The course was in very good shape. It is pretty wide open and I don’t recall water coming into play on any holes except the last one, which was perfect for us as it was our first time out since it got cold in New Hampshire.
For some reason, the driving range was closed. We had tee times just after 2:00 when the rates dropped to their lowest, but were ready to head out by 1:30 and they had no problem with us going early. There is no beverage cart. Thankfully our beverage bags were full of adult beverages, which no one paid any attention to. I would highly recommend this course and expect to be back.
Challenging Course
I think this is the 4th time playing Black Bear over the past few years. Course is quite challenging. Some of the sand traps appear to be not well maintained and some greens had some patches of weed although cut short enough that this was not an issue. Overall I would say this is not really a course for beginners.
Well Worth the Drive
Way overpriced and poor condition
I played Black Bear because it has always been in great condition. No more. Many of the fairways were sketchy. The bunkers had very heavy sand, but they did have sand. The greens were hit and miss with bumps and bare spots. To top it off, when we did not have anyone pushing us (we only saw the group behind a couple of times after letting a twosome through) the ranger told us to pick up the pace since we were "thirty minutes behind pace." That was uncalled for, and when we left 18, after cleaning up our stuff, rearranging our bags, and so on, that group hadn't yet reached the green on 17.
Nice course, good value.
Everything was OK. Clubhouse was helpful and friendly.
Typical Pete Dye course with some traps and obstacles, elevation changes, and small, somewhat challenging greens. Have played there several times over the years and will return on my next visit to the area.
