A little dark, but black bear in a dark tree, hole # 6...appropriate for Black Bear Golf Club! Photo submitted by relivgolfers on 09/29/2013
First Time
Wife and I played Black Bear for the first time. As described by many, this is a course with wide fairways and small greens. All grass areas were in good shape, and bunkers near greens were filled with soft, fluffy sand. The great bunkers were appreciated since there are many of them on the course. I liked the green sizes as this makes for some real target golf. Nick in the pro shop was very friendly and got us off a little early which we appreciated. Will definitely play again when in the area.
Consistent
This course is consistently in good shape. The pace of play was awesome…we finished in 3 and a 1/2 hours. The greens were in good shape, as well as the fairways and tee boxes. I still hate whole 18 because it’s simply the hardest hole in Orlando. (LOL) The only thing I didn’t like was the rate. I know it’s peak season but $79 is pushing it. Although that’s the going rate pretty much everywhere and I feel courses are price gouging.
Disappointment!
We just wanted to get out and play. Its a course that as you pull into for the first time your think oh boy we made a mistake. But no one in your group wants to say anything just yet. From the tee boxes to the fairways to the deeply washed out traps and greens that left you thinking.? Why are we here? I would compare the course to a beat up muni and rate the place a two.
Friendly staff, good organisation, Many bunkers and hills
Friendly staff, the Organisation about thunder and rainfall was very good, After waiting we could play very well. The course ist interesting, AL lot of bunkers an hills, any blind holes, good restaurant with excellent margherita.
Not worth the drive
Course in need of some TLC. Bunkers are horrible. Just needs cleaned up. Fairways and greens are ok
Poor condition.
Course is usually in much better condition.
Greens were very slow. Some had a lot of damage.
Fairways had a lot of course grass and weeds.
Always a good choice.
Excellent greens and layout. Fairways typical for Florida on winter.
Black Bear Golf
Played Black Bear today. Everything was very green, but there were weeds scattered throughout fairways, some weeds on greens, and every green fringe had lots of weeds. The course is a great layout and lots of fun to play. Having played here before, the weeds were disappointing. This is not a $60 (weekday morning) golf course. Needs much more TLC to be $60 a round.
Please don’t let it go backwards
I went to golf management school in Orlando 2004-2005 and this was one of all of our favorite courses. Then the housing market crashed and the course crashed with a different owner with course conditions and an un-needed redesign of the 18th hole. We stopped playing due to the worst course conditions I had seen at this awesome course. A few years ago we put it back into the rotation due to reviews stating what great shape it was in. We were told new ownership and they were getting it back in shape. The reviews were right and we added it back to our rotation. This trip it was a bit disappointing. Conditions weren’t as good as they had been. Some greens need some work, bunkers really need it. Either you’re removing bunkers and making changes or they aren’t. A few bunker that used to be there are now over grown or being removed slowly. Such as front of green on 4, middle of fairway on 9. Tee boxes average to average+. Fairways okay, rough okay. Just not quite where it has been the last few times. Just don’t want to see it go back to where it was. Love this track.
Ridiculous small greens
Played based on course ratings at nice price. Very hilly course but postage stamp sideways greens make play miserable. Miss pin by ten feet left of right put you down hills 25 feet below a green 20 feet wide. Impossible to play. Recommend to no one.
Take up Bingo instead, leave golf to the people who can actually play and persist.
You’re going to hate it BUT !
Great layout in decent shape, nice practice facility and friendly staff. Greens are mostly angled to fairways with most being elevated with deep runoff areas. You need to play this course more than once to appreciate it because you need to know where to come into the greens from the fairways or you’ll wear out your lob wedge as you won’t be able to hold the irregular shaped greens. Most greens are long and narrow and approaching them from an angle makes it almost impossible to hold your approach shots.
Was a golfnow hot deal so the price brought us in. Course appears to see lots of use and compared to others in the general area, the condition is best described as ‘used’. Great and interesting layout but definitely tough. In many spots. the margin for errant shots is minimal. Greens are tiny and areas to bail or play it safe are few and far between. Collection areas have an exciting collection of conditions. In short, an outstanding layout with lots of opportunities to improve the consistency of the conditions
i agree it is horrible
