A little dark, but black bear in a dark tree, hole # 6...appropriate for Black Bear Golf Club! Photo submitted by relivgolfers on 09/29/2013
Wouldn’t pay anymore than I did today
Didn’t know coming in that PB Dye designed a very hilly course wasn’t too bad. Not really female friendly course since the red tees were often found just placed on the fairway, not having its own tee boxes. A lot of the tee boxes and the greens were in rough shape. The sand traps were also not in great condition either, some missing rakes or not grated.
Nice course
Drove almost 2 hours to get there. Was worth the money and the drive. Great layout. Unfortunately we hit very rough weather. Lots of wind and rain a few times. But that has nothing to do with the course, which was perfect.
Ok. Black Bear I see You!
Ok after reading some of the reviews I was skeptical and ready for some unpleasant staff and course. What I encountered was local staff and course ready to assist to make my round good. The only thing I can say is the pace of play was a struggle because they were so eager to get everyone going that it bottle necked quickly. Other than that it was a nice experience. We don’t do the back nine because of the pace so instead we opted to play front again. So next time the full experience because I would love to see the back 9. This course was a challenge! Iam a member at Bella Collina and it’s tough but this gives it a run for the money because of blind shots and small greens. Of course Bella has the means to be immaculate where Black Bear may lack staff and maintenance upkeep but still it was decent shape for me! The restaurant was good and the gentlemen at the Proshop as well as the waitress treated us well! I was even able to have my wife ride along without any issues! Well done Black Bear we will be back!
Always enjoy playing this course
Great course, especially for the hot deal. Always a good time. Driver off the T box is very forgiving. Hitting greens are a must to score!
Nice course, nasty owner
On the 18th hole, you have to go over water. Two of my partners hit their balls in the water. I was retrieving balls out of the water trying to find theirs and a guy up by the clubhouse started yelling towards us. I picked out five balls and two of the five were my partners. The man yelling at me drove over and confronted me for taking five balls out of the pond and claiming that I was stealing from him because he was the owner. I informed him that I had never heard of such a rule as I play over 100 courses a year. He kept screaming at me that I was stealing from him and that all the balls in the water belonged to him I told him he needed to have a seminar in customer relations and then finish the round. Great golf course, but nasty owner.
Great course to play for the value
The price was great, the layout and undulation of the course was awesome and the clubhouse/bar staff were amazing. The only drawback was the owner of the property. He's extremely unprofessional, kind of a jerk and could use some serious humbling when it came to handling an issue that arose. Other than that, I'd play Black Bear again any day if the week!
Review
I’ve been playing her 20 years. It is not in the condition the price demands. It is looking pretty bad. Fairways rough and greens all need help. Probably won’t play here til it is bette
Very Up & Down
Overall the course was in good to great shape.
The tee boxes were nice and green,
The fairways and greens were acceptable, with the exception of number 6, which the starter told us was being worked on, so a temp was created. There was also on other green on the back that I remember was patchy.
The majority of the fairways are very undulating, so be careful where you hit your tee shots.
The greens are elevated and there is plenty of run offs so do your best to choose a club on your approach that you can land on the greens.
Very challenging and different that most of the courses I've played in central Florida but it was fun and I'll be back!
Getting better
Played this course for the first time in about 6 months, it has definitely improved, the green on #6 is almost ready for play, tee boxes, fairways and greens are in good shape, I hope they open the driving range for grass practice.
Would like to know before making Tee time that one hole will be unavailable!!Also, would be helpful especially on Par threes to have sign that tells you best place to leave cart from cart path!
Black Bear
A good track and a link style course. My only complaint is a large amount of the green are narrow and hitting out the green side bunkers are pure he$$. Enjoy and to play again when the temperature is warmer and not windy.
