Avoid Joining as a Member
This is my first year with Birkdale and will be my last. We joined Birkdale due to being so close, but I can tell you it is not worth the proximity, I will be leaving to join another club further away.
Birkdale will push out as many teams as possible in a day. If the weather is halfway decent expect to wait a long time. They do not monitor their tee times allowing teams to tee off late or early and it creates a bottleneck on the course. Unless you go out in the extreme cold or potential rain, their course is packed, and the pace is ridiculously slow.
The conditions of the course are "ok" at best. Last time I played, there were several holes with tire tracks from either carts or maintenance equipment in the middle of fairways or near the greens. Their course also retains water like a sponge, Several holes maintain a soggy soupy mess which makes it difficult to even walk out to your ball let alone driving the cart and this is when carts are allowed on the course and not cart path only.
The greens for most holes are a disaster, between players who refuse to fix their divots and general maintenance it is like playing plinko when you putt. The tee boxes are somewhat fine, they are probably 50/50 grass and dirt, but they are playable.
The practice range is ok and as a member I don't have much to say about the cost of balls as it is included. The staff are friendly but seem powerless to enforce rules or manage flow on the course. Don't even ask if anyone can come out to help resolve a problem you will just be told they are understaffed or can't do anything about it and to play on or around the issue.
If you are looking to just play a few holes here or there and learn to play it can be a decent option, but if you are serious about playing, look elsewhere. There are so many other options to either play or join other courses that I would highly recommend avoiding Birkdale.
Great shape - fast play
Course was in great shape for January. Greens firm with solid pace. Overall great round of golf.
good conditions for Dcember
as we enter the few months of unavoidable winter conditions, Birkdale is one of the better reasonably-priced public choices in Central VA. always a good layout and pretty decent conditions for fairways and greens considering the winter turf dormancy
Still one of my favorites
This course is great for ALL skill levels. Nothing too easy and nothing too difficult. Weather was perfect and the course looked great for this time of the year. Staff was extremely friendly and even let me tee off early. I never know what to put for off site amenities but if I had used them I am sure they would be just as good as the on site ones. This course is fun and you won't leave this course feeling like you've been beat down by the golf gods.
Birdies A plenty!!
Enjoyed the course today!!! Played with a nice group and enjoyed the company. Played from the blacks and course is not to difficult. If you want a challenge and a good time try this course. Excellent shape.
Course remain in terrible condition all summer
The T boxes were extremely hard, fairways were either very wet/muddy or Nothing but dirt. The greens were full of Divet‘s in bare spots.
Management is terrible. They could care less about how many teetimes they made at once and how long it takes to get through the course. This was my first year as a member and my last year
Great Course for the money.
Played with close friend and we are both Lefties. The course just sets up very nice. I’d recommend it. Play was a bit slower and could benefit from a marshal moving the flow along.
Major improvements
Let’s start with range balls, very expensive for not very good range balls and crappy grass at the range. Course looked very good, major improvements over conditions the last few years. Much better looking and more playability. bunkers were cared for though several were wet or very hard they were at least given some attention. Greens are getting much better though as I find at all the local courses, very few people are repairing their ball marks and it is the main problem with most greens. I don’t understand not taking the small amount of time to properly repair your own ball mark. If you can’t find your own, fix another, it is good for everyone. I saw signs on driving range about divot management but you may want to put a few on repairing ball marks. Pace of play was slow as course was busy. We did not check out the amenities after round. Very impressed with the progress and I hope you continue. Worth playing if you haven’t been there lately.
Needs work but still nice
Very wet course doesn't drain the best but the fairways were is decent shape but several green need some serious attention.
Unimpressive and Disappointing!!!
Played here a few years ago and the course was immaculate. I don’t what has happened since. The greens were all chewed up, the tee boxes were atrocious and very little room to hit from. Not worth the money at all. I recommended going somewhere else like Mill Quarter Plantation or Providence Golf Club. It was very disappointing and the only bright spot on the day was one of the holes, maintenance was letting water pressure out of the pipes and it turned into a geyser.
Aways enjoy playing here!
The pace is always decent most slower players allow you to play through. Great layout the staff is amazing.
Improving
Played this course and had allotted plenty of time to play. Good thing because the course was crowded and everyone must have been in no hurry to play a round. Totally ok though as the people I came across were super friendly and did not get mad at me or the staff for not pairing me up with someone. Relaxing day with my best 9 ever on the back. The front...meh but that just makes me want to go back again.
The greens were definitely in ok shape but considering it's already September, you can't expect too much. Still sandy. I love the signs that say "repair your ball mark and one other" but you can tell that most people aren't abiding by that request.
The staff at the end of the day were extremely friendly and were my biggest cheerleaders when I had told them about my best 9. I'm sure they shoot rounds like that all the time but it still was nice of them to acknowledge my accomplishment.
It had been awhile since I had golfed there and I forgot how fun this course is. Whether you're a beginner golfer or a little better than average this course won't overpower you and you'll have a great time chasing that little white ball around its fairways.
Always good
Greens a little sparse and looked like recently top dressed. Still good shape all around.
Very average course...unfriendly staff
I've played this course multiple times because it's so close to my house. I learned to play golf on this course and really liked it for a pretty beginner friendly course. Most fairways are pretty wide open, not a ton of undulation on the greens, solid layout overall. The course conditions just haven't been great for what you pay the last few times I've gone. Most of the staff is just rude to be quite frank, in particular there is an older lady that works the counter that just seems to hate working there. The price has also gone up every year since I started playing golf, and this course would be great value for 30-45 bucks but it can't be justified over other courses in the area at the $50 mark. They do have new carts, but for the price I just think there are better options in the area. Lake Chesdin, Providence, and Mill Quarter come to mind.
