About

Holes 18
Type Resort
Par 72
Length 6855 yards
Slope 135
Rating 73.8

The Brigantine/Clipper Course at Shipyard Golf Club combines two of the three nine-hole golf courses on the property for one of the more challenging tests on Hilton Head. Brigantine/Clipper has a rating of 73.5, with a slope of 135 from the championship tees.

Designed by Willard Byrd and built in 1982, alligators sun themselves along the scenic, water hazard-filled Brigantine nine holes. With slight doglegs and well-placed bunkers, this golf course requires shot making and a good short game.

With plenty of sand and water hazards, Clipper may be the most difficult of the nines. This George Cobb design requires a good long game and a soft touch around the greens.

Enjoyed the course. It would have helped to have a course outline or map and more visible(stakes) yardage markers

Intimidation from the Get Go

I was on a golfing trip with 4 women. We arrived at Shipyard and were notified that our back nine would be cart paths only (for no reason whatsoever). The Starter took us to the first tee box and informed us that there was over 300 golfers that day and we were expected to keep up with the “pace of play” and to make sure that there was always a half of hole between us and the group ahead. We are four women, come on! I wonder if he said the same to four men! Any way, he proceeded to tell us that if we didn’t stay on the cart path on the Clipper course, we would be “kicked out.” Needless to say, we weren’t in the best frame of mind to have a good time from the first hole. Their Starter needs to add a little bit of chill to his spill.

Challenging but Scenic

Having played this course a few years ago, I was pleasantly surprised by its condition this time - greens and fairways were all in great shape. It played a little slow, but not to the point of really annoyance. Keep an eye open for gators - saw a few along the way! Being on HHI, I suppose the $106 fee for an afternoon tee time is not unreasonable, however, I'd look for a deal next time.

Shipyard 10/23/24

Course is in good shape. Played the Galleon and Clipper 9s. Clipper 9 was cart path only. Pace of play stressed but we were not rushed by player assistants.

Had lunch in the Brickyard afterward. Food was tasty and not overly priced.

Better Than Expected Condition

Having played Shipyard a few times previously, but 5+ years ago, I was surprised by how well the course was maintained. Wicked-fast greens, well-manicured fairways, and light, fluffy sand in the traps. Carts were kind of old, and lacked GPS, and yardage markers on course were scarce. Still, it's a worthwhile play for HHI.

Worth It.

Two folks in the pro shop. The lady was extremely helpful and friendly. The gentleman, not so much. Staff in the bar were great!

The course was in nice condition. The Greens were some of the best I've been on this year. You gotta like Target golf and dog-legs. There are a bunch of them.

Overall, definitely worth the $125 I paid.

Shipyard

We really enjoyed this course. 27 hole layout allows for variety- greens are very true- only a little more slick than our home course. Would highly recommend it and plan to play it again
