Elks Run Golf Club
About
Elks Run Golf Club in Batavia was designed by Greg Norman. It sprawls across 163 lush and secluded acres where golfers will be hard-pressed to find a home anywhere close to the course. Norman carefully utilized the natural terrain, incorporating the meandering creek on several holes and also adding a few holes that venture up the side of a hill. Thanks to the dramatic elevation changes, there are some tees where your ball seems to stay in the air forever. The first nine is more open with a traditional links-style layout that then leads to the more densely wooded back nine. In addition to the trees and other natural hazards, there is also an unusually thick first cut of rough as well as tall stands of native grasses.

Elks Run 9th Tee, short but challenging with a view of what is to come. Photo submitted by msparke on 10/25/2012
Great design and fantastic greens
Played this course in February expected greens to be slow and bumpy because it had rained the past few days, I was very surprised when the greens were cut and rolled and surprisingly smooth. The design of the course was challenging and had good length. The last five holes were as challenging of closing holes from the tips as I have played in cincinnati. Great course, fun to play, and I will most definitely be back there soon to play.
Love it
The different challenges that this course presents is a blast. It requires all types of shots. And the views are gorgeous
Elks Run Review
I always enjoy playing Elks Run. It is one of the nicest courses for the price east of Cincinnati. Quite challenging for any caliber of golfer and the amenities are very good.
Best course and staff on the East Side!
The staff is great and it starts with the ownership all the way down to the super Tracey and his excellent staff that maintains the course.
The Friday night dinners with the entree of steak or salmon fantastic.
Just wish the assistant pro could win more money in the Florida tournaments! lol
Great Golf Course
The staff has done an excellent job bringing this course back after two flash floods caused significant damage during the summer. Tee boxes are in great shape, most fairways are in very good condition (aside from a few that still have a bare patch here and there), and the greens are rolling great. Bunkers are also in great condition. The layout of this course is one that will bring you back over and over with beautiful elevation changes. Front 9 is more open while back 9 winds through the woods with a creek that comes into play on several holes. If you have never played at Elks Run, do yourself a favor and get there for a round!
Beautiful Course!
I've played this course for the last 2 years and it is by far, one of my favorites. The recovery by the crew after the floods has been phenomenal! Challenging from the fairways, difficult from the up-grown native area, overall beautifully kept, with very friendly staff. I play here every chance I get. Although the greens are well maintained, the golfers seem to forget that repairing your ball mark is your own responsibility. Overall a beautiful layout in a picturesque setting that is more than worth the travel, time and money.
Absolutely love it.
Wouldn't expect anything less from Greg Norman or the countless others who contributed to this great track. Very scenic. Great views. I will say challenging, but still fun. If I lived closet would play everyday.
A very enjoyable course, but horrible pace of play
Course is quite nice, back 9 winds through and around a large creek, with very scenic holes. 4 fairways were being aerated, so we were cart path only on these.
Took 5 hours to play on a Tuesday!! We had foursomes in front of us, playing a scramble. Normally, scramble groups are faster than regular foursomes, but not here! No ranger in sight, maybe due to the late Fall date. This was the only thing marring the round.
Hi Schwantego,
Thank you for leaving us a review, and we appreciate your feedback on your round. We hope that the pace of play you experienced on Tuesday does not deter you from visiting us again!
Best regards,
Elks Run Management
Aerating made it bumpy
Well aerating made it very difficult on the greens, it's still a great place to play. Just wish I had known. I was skipped it this week
elks run
it was a rainy day, but the course was in ok condition considering the very hot weather we have been having.
it's always a nice venue to play.
Great layout
After recent storms the staff has done a great job of getting the course in good playing conditions. Greens fast and true. Some fairways still need a little help. Overall good value, and experience.
Worst course I have played all year, Never have I had to avoid the fairway on purpose, but without grass the course is unplayable... in need of lots of work! Wouldn't pay more than $15 a round
TLC Needed.
This course is in need of some TLC. From where is was at the beginning till now has fallen dramatically. Weeds throughout, unplayable sand traps and tee boxes that need to be redone. Will not play there anytime soon. However, the $25.00 greens few was reasonable for the the time and course conditions.
Thank you for your feedback. We are constantly working to improve our course conditions and hope to see you back in the Fall! - ElksRunMGMT
Very nice course
I just moved here from Florida and have been trying a lot of courses. This is one of my favorites so far. Well kept up for the most part except for a few holes but they say that flash floods were the cause of that. I could see that being that there are creeks running all through the course and the amount of rain we had the last few weeks. I really enjoyed the round and would definitely play again.
Greg Norman Course Surprises
I asked a friend who is a Golf Advisor staffer for a list of courses to play while I was in the Cincinnati area. The list provided was thorough and spot on. I played four courses. All were great public courses to play. However, Elks Run outshone them all. The layout is located in a small river valley that takes advantage of the elevation changes. The front nine has wide open fairways and large greens. The second nine requires a player to be more strategic off the tee and second shots are to smaller green complexes, usually with the creek fronting the green. Recent flooding has damaged several parts of the back nine but do not let that be a deterrent. The grounds crew has done an outstanding job returning the course to playability. I joined a twosome, one of whom is a local pro at another top area course. He repeatedly stated Elks Run was his favorite course in the Greater Cincinnati. All in all, the value to play this course is exceptional. $29 twilight rate. Recommend to anyone.
Need work
fairways ok, greens in bad shape looked like they have not been touched in weeks.
no ranger on course and waiting at every tee boxes. would only pay $10.00 Also the sand trap were terrible you couldn't even hit out of them.
Thanks for your recent review. Our staff has been working very hard to recover from two flash floods, the most recent three days before you played. We appreciate your feedback and will continue to work hard and make things better.
Still good at it's core
Tough time of year with just exiting the summer heat. Agree with previous review about potential over-watering. Many fairways bare in spots and thin lies were the order of the day in the fairway. Bunkers washed out, could be due to recent heavy rain but when I see weeds growing in them it makes me think twice. The once prized heather where they had you play it as a lateral hazard to preserve is long gone. The former heather areas are now just weedy wastelands. Course can get backed up with golfers looking for balls. So.. bring the heather back, mark it red, plant some grass and mow it or something else low maintenance. Greens generally in good shape except ball marks (fix them or find another hobby, people!). Not as pristine as when they rolled them a lot back in the day. Maybe counter-intuitive, but perhaps the place isn't charging enough. I know economics of the golf course business is tough these days, but charge a bit more so the course has more to invest and this track could be a great place again. It's so nice to play on just a golf course with nature, not in housing development. I just wish it could ratchet itself up a notch or two. The layout is modern and attractive.
Thanks for your recent review. We appreciate your continued support and patronage. The golf course staff has been working very diligently to recover from two flash floods. The floods have made it very difficult to maintain the course to our standards, especially our bunkers, but our staff will continue to work hard during the recovery, and will return the course to the best possible playing conditions. Thanks.
Not worth the money even at a discount
Second time I played the course, I was excited by the great price through Golf Now but when we got on the course and played it was a disappointment. Terrible conditiion, the greens were worn, the fairways had so many bare spots and the traps, although more sand on this course than Miami Beach, were almost unplayable. Very disappointed.
Thanks for your review, we apologize for your experience. Our golf course recently experienced two flash floods. The floods have made it very difficult to maintain the course to our standards, but our staff continues to work hard during the recovery process. Thanks again for your review and we appreciate your understanding.
A Must-play in the Fall
My buddy and I played this course 3-4 times per year. Nice Layout. There are a few holes with elevation. Great view! Good condition. We like to go here in the Fall for the colors also. The back nine is more scenic than the front.
It has rained the night before so the course was extremely wet. Cart path only. We walked. Pace of play was a little too long, but for a Sunday morning, it was to be expected. The ranger was active and friendly. The clubhouse is better than average.
Thanks for your recent review and continued patronage. We hope to see you back at the course very soon. Thanks again.
Thanks for your review Dave! We wish you lived closer too! Thank you for your continued support!
