Rating 71.0

Hyde Park Golf Club, built in 1925 by Donald Ross, is one of the oldest in Florida. In 1971, the golf course was purchased by former touring professionals Billy Maxwell and Chris Blocker, who have successfully restored it.

Rolling hills, gorgeous Spanish Oaks and towering Southern Pines make Hyde Park a lasting experience. A tour stop for the men's and women's professional golf tours in the 1940s and 1950s, the golf course gained a place in history during the 1947 Jacksonville Open. The great Ben Hogan took an 11 on the par-3 sixth, which became known as "Hogan's Alley." It has a deep-faced bunker to the right and water to the left.

Hyde Park Golf Club measures 6,468 yards from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating is 71, and it has a slope rating of 124.

Very nice course

The course is in great condition. I have played nearly every public course between Jacksonville and New Smyrna Beach this year and this course is as nice or better than most all of them. We really enjoyed playing here today.

Tee Boxes

Hyde always provides that challenging round for the only “Muni” in town. However, today the tee boxes were suboptimal! A good round is always predicated by a good drive or tee-shot to a par 3…

Worst conditions, even worse customer service.

I’ve played here countless times since moving to the west side of JAX. The course is 5 minutes from my house and being a Donald Ross layout I used to love playing here a couple times a month. I’m an intermediate golfer so bad course conditions don’t bother me much... with that said I can honestly say that I’ve never played a course in worse conditions, and I’ve played Blue Sky. I’m not even saying it was in great condition when I first played it in 2019 but it was manageable. Now it’s basically a hayfield. Greens have always been bad, and the bunkers are now just filled all the way in. This is just the course. I recently had another disheartening experience in the pro shop and being such a great course layout with loads of potential I would think they’d want returning customers. I worked in the service industry for over 15 years and every time I walk into this shack of a clubhouse it always seems like they don’t want me there. They’re aloof and downright impolite. Save your money and drive an extra 15 minutes to Bent Creek, you’ll be happy you did.

I understand the pandemic has put a kink in a lot of club doings, but this has nothing to do with it.

Worst in JAX

I’ve played this course a bunch of times in the last 15 years. It’s amazing how they’ll decide to put 2 million dollars into a clubhouse but NEVER EVER work on the course. It is easily the worst greens in town for many years. It’s unbelievably bad. Yesterday was the last time I will ever play there. Even if it’s free, it’s that bad. They have a bunch of old guys running the place not knowing what they’re doing when it comes to course maintenance. Shame bc it could be good. It’ll take a complete greens rejuvenation to get me to go back out there.

Classic Donald Ross/great value

Visiting from Canada family in Ponte Vedre a year ago & met/played with pro shop staff/Billy; he recommended Hyde Park; finally made it over after a year. Worth the drive from PV; the classic Ross (1925) is in great shape; every aspect enjoyable. Staff very accommodating; $26 green fee/cart can’t be beat.

For the Skynyrd fan, the Van Zant house is a few blocks away; Free Bird must fly over the course daily.

Will be back.

Much improved and perfect for walking

Walked the course during final round of TPC, in about 3 hours. The course conditions are good, with many improvements to maintain the bunkers and reduce excessive shading of greens and tee boxes,. The owner and staff are clearly taking pride in the course. The greens are slower but appropriate to the design - some of the greens are steeper than typical modern courses and would be frustrating if they were fast.

The course design is interesting and beautiful, especially the back 9. If I could change one thing, I would market it to golfers who like to walk, and allow walking anytime. Currently, walking is allowed after 2 or 3pm on weekends and anytime during the week. It was designed decades before golf carts, and the routing and rolling hills are perfect for walking. Jax Beach is basically the only other public club for many miles that is great for walking, and pace of play is good there. Allowing all day, weekend walking would provide a competitive niche that also happens to put less wear on the turf. Try charging the same price as carts during prime time or maybe 2-3 dollars less. Given the few public, weekend walking courses, you might even be able to charge a premium above the golf cart rate, especially with a decent rental push cart for people who haven’t done it before. Anyway, I’m looking forward to going back!

Always fun and challenging

This historic course is always fun. I've played a lot of courses in town but enjoy this one the most.. the staff is great. The clubhouse is being renovated but is no inconvenience to the golfers. A lot of money is being put into the course. I especially liked the new carts equipped with charging ports for your phone.

Remember who the customer is

I know courses do not get any of the "hot deal" fee on Golfnow. But if a course is going to use Golfnow, then they should treat that booking like they should treat any customer. If I happen to walk in at 11:10 and my tee time was 11:10, I am not wanting any guff from the person. If you can't accommodate me to tee later just say so, and if you can accommodate me, then don't try to berate me for being late, and then turn around and say you can let me tee off later once I get my feathers ruffled. For the record, the course was barely even busy for the rest of the day.

Leaps and bounds

Hyde Park is making great strides in rejuvenating itself. The course has great bones and the fairways and greens are greatly improved. At around $15-$20 to play, what more can you ask for.

Great affordable fun

First time playing this course and for the price you just can’t beat it. The layout is fun, and the back 9 was my favorite because of the difficult holes. Not much water or hazards, so posting a good score is definitely possible. Will play again.

Great Conditions

The course is in really good shape. I read an earlier review that said the course could be better, so I was concerned. The grounds crew has done an outstanding job, considering all the rain we have had in the past 3 months. The greens are a little slow, and the are running true, so it may not be a private course, but it is in as good a shape as any course I can play on.

It is what it is

It's a nice little Donald Ross course. You can't expect pristine conditions when you pay $17 - $30. It's a shame that it can't be made into the beautiful course it could be but not for that money
