Black Gold Golf Club
About
Nestled in the foothills of Yorba Linda, Black Gold Golf Club sits on the site of a former Shell Oil Field. Arthur Hills, the course's designer, thought the location, with its dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views overlooking Orange County and Palm Beach, was the perfect place for a round of golf. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The challenging layout is filled with narrow, rolling fairways and fast greens accented by thick patches of punishing rough. Due to the hilly terrain, a flat lie is hard to come by. The front nine requires accuracy and the back nine offers some particularly interesting risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards come into play throughout Black Gold Golf Club, most notably on the 18th. This par-5 finishing hole incorporates a cascading waterfall.

Fast greens penalize good shots
This place is fun. Strategic holes, well kept. Good value.
My issue is that the greens are so fast, you cannot play amateur golf -> center of green, no pin hunting kind of safe golf here. The greens are so fast that a good shot for 99% of amateurs will be penalized. You’re on in two, GIR, and will still expect bogey or worse. As long as you’re okay with that, fun course. If you’re not open to tapping a ball and it roll 20ft -> avoid.
OC gem
Black Gold is a scenic canyon course in the Orange County foothills. The layout is challenging, the conditions very nice despite having been aerated the week before.
OK
Course was in good shape… staff was excellent and everyone was great. However. 10 should’ve just remained closed because hitting off of a mat on top of a wood box was unnecessary. Pace of play was horrendous… Seven parties stuck in two holes was pretty insane.
Played through and skipped 3 holes and it still took us 4 1/2 hours for the round (of 15)
Aerification Wasn't Bad
I was warned about the aerification prior to the round, but it didn't really impact the experience. Other than a few bumps here and there, the greens were already bounding back, and most putts rolled smoothly.
Back 9 only
GolfNow didn’t inform me we could only play the back 9 only today due to aerificatuin
Wasn’t have driven so far .
First time at Black Golf
Friendly and helpful staff.
Nice greens and wide fairways.
Some construction but understandable.
A tad pricey but overall a great time.
Course conditions
I reserved my round on GOLFNOW app. It was easy. When I arrived to the course it was under construction. There was no prior notice and they did not give any discount because of the course being under construction. If I had cancelled to to this I still would have been charged. I was not happy. So until the course is complete I will not be returning.
Fast greens and nice layout
Pace of play was great and course was in great shape. Extremely challenging greens which were extremely fast.
Good, not great
Very good course. Not the best around. They are at a disadvantage given natural disaster that affected hole 10. But still rough patches here and there on fairways make it not 5/5. Staff is great and food is delicious
Beautiful course, but………
We played this course many times, really beautiful. But the pond on 10th hole was removed…….such a big loss!
Good Bones / Under Renovation
The design is OK and feels somewhere between Sand Canyon and Oak Quarry. A few holes are unnatural hill climbs. Before booking note there is no driving range in Jan 2026. You warm up into nets. As well the lake that protects the 10th hole and 18th green is drained, and they have you playing off a turf mat on 10.
Friendly and helpful staff good pace of play
It was a foggy morning which made traffic slower than normal and made me two minutes late for my tee time but the staff and the started were helpful in getting me out within 40 minutes of when I arrived. The course was in great shape greens were rolling good and were pretty fast. The food in the restaurant is really good. The only bad things about it was the driving range is closed down and they had a sink hole just infront of the tenth tee box which is a par three. They are in the process of fixing it so they had to close the 10th tee box. They made a temporary tee box on the left side of the 18th fairway which you hit off a mat over the 18th fairway to the 10th green. It plays 100-110 yards. Which isn’t bad just make sure you stay behind the net when waiting to tee off.
Brothers birthday round
We came up for my brothers bday. Every staff member was super friendly and helpful. It really felt like we were at a NICE course. We jokingly rate golf courses on their breakfast burrito, and lemme tell you: this place is a 10/10.
Staff was wonderful, food was wonderful, and the course was crazy fun and playable. I’ll be coming back 100%
