Nestled in the foothills of Yorba Linda, Black Gold Golf Club sits on the site of a former Shell Oil Field. Arthur Hills, the course's designer, thought the location, with its dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views overlooking Orange County and Palm Beach, was the perfect place for a round of golf. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The challenging layout is filled with narrow, rolling fairways and fast greens accented by thick patches of punishing rough. Due to the hilly terrain, a flat lie is hard to come by. The front nine requires accuracy and the back nine offers some particularly interesting risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards come into play throughout Black Gold Golf Club, most notably on the 18th. This par-5 finishing hole incorporates a cascading waterfall.

Didn't live up to the hype

This course was recommended to me by a couple of friends in OC. I was expecting it to be a really great course, but honestly, I was really disappointed. The condition of the course was pretty poor and the construction work makes it a course I won't be returning to.

In one bunker with no sand

Had to hit of dirt in one bunker that got over watered and washed all the sand away. Otherwise, great course and got 133 yard birdie on 14! It will be a super place once the solar project is done and they have the driving range back.

Hot but little wind so Nice Day

The course is in great shape and the layout is challenging. Played solo and could have been done in 3 hrs but slow play on the back nine brought it up the the regular 4.5 hours. One issue with a sand bunker on hole 2 or 3 where the greens keeper watered too much so the sand was hard packed. Not like the powder sugar of most bunkers so and Anomaly. 90 degree day was pushing the comfort zone so if you don't like it sweaty, play in spring or fall. 87 out of 100.

First visit, and Didn't disappoint!

7/02/25 First time at this golf course. Got a great last minute deal. While it was still priceyer than othe golf courses I've played, It did not disappoint. Pace of play was good (only waited a few minutes on 2 holes.) Fair ways and greens were all beutiful and well maintained. Normally this is out of my budget but app gave me a hot deal that I couldn't ignore. Keep in mind that I did golf on a Wednesday.

Would love to return back some time with my son and my dad.

First time, not the last

This was the first time either my wife or I played Black Gold. We played as a team (scramble) and had the best round of our lives. We shot a combined 80. Not the norm for us. The course was gorgeous and pretty hard but we had a blast. It was significant as it was our 30th course together in our 3 years of marriage. Hope to play it again.

A Gem!

We visit Newport area every summer after schools out. When we visit we always try to play at least twice during our stay and we usually gravitate toward the familiar courses along the coast. In this case strayed from out comfort zone and played Black Golf GC. First and foremost, the course was every bit worth the $105 we paid. The entire course from tee box to greens was a pleasure to play and challenging throughout. If you want a course with serious elevation changes that will require you to use every club in your bag, this is the one. The course is in the foothills and every shot is influenced by the "valley effect"...the ball gravitates toward the valley; making down hill putts slow, up hill putts fast, left to right putts don't break, and of course straight putts break a ton. Outside service folks are outstanding and waiting for you as you leave the 18th green. The down side is the range closed and being used as a parking lot as the course parking lot is getting a major renovation. Indoor food and beverage is quite slow, but that was fine as the on course beverage cart was typically johnny on the spot with a cold beer...or two.

Black Gold

Better than 5 months ago with the pace of play. Don’t have to wait on a single hole. One of the bunkers were muddy on the front 9, but maybe I should hit it in the fairway. Course is well maintained. Def worth the price.

Challenging and fun

Have played this course 5 times previously. Fairway conditions were quite good. Greens fast (the practice greens are a good preview of play on the actual course) so that you need to be careful even on uphill putts, and multitiered. Nice changes in elevation. Some narrow landing areas. Probably my favorite daily fee within 50 miles of LA city.

Fine course, but no range for 6 months????

Loss of the driving range for so very long is most unfortunate. Is so long really necessary??

The course is challenging and fun.

Excellent golf course

Nice course with views of Orange County. Greens are fast. Fairways good shape. Carts get locked when approaching certain parts of fairway can be annoying sometimes. Staff very friendly. Great pace and value for the money.

Nicely laid out course

Staffs were kind and professional.

Course is laid out nicely and well maintained.

Greens can be maintained little better but it’s good. The beer was little pricey

Great Course

The course was both challenging and fair. The greens a bit fast and hard to read. Lots of elevated greens. I would definitely go again.
