Black Gold Golf Club
About
Nestled in the foothills of Yorba Linda, Black Gold Golf Club sits on the site of a former Shell Oil Field. Arthur Hills, the course's designer, thought the location, with its dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views overlooking Orange County and Palm Beach, was the perfect place for a round of golf. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The challenging layout is filled with narrow, rolling fairways and fast greens accented by thick patches of punishing rough. Due to the hilly terrain, a flat lie is hard to come by. The front nine requires accuracy and the back nine offers some particularly interesting risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards come into play throughout Black Gold Golf Club, most notably on the 18th. This par-5 finishing hole incorporates a cascading waterfall.

not worth the price
dont really see a reason to play here with the high green fees.. course condition is average at best, greens are ok.. not sure why anyone would pay $100+ to play this course.
Great course on a great day
I first played Black Gold in 2003, before most of the surrounding housing had been built, and was impressed by the layout. My next visit was 17 years later. It has matured into a fun, inspiring course with many challenges. The conditions were very good with well-watered fairways and true-rolling greens (although I had to fix a lot of other golfers' ball marks -- come on people!). The distances on the tees are good - I played whites with the matched-up twosome playing blues, we ended up in similar positions and had a lot of makeable approach shot. Many challenges but most could be dealt with by course management. Pace was good, only waited a few minutes on a few tees and finished the course in 4 hours 30 minutes, just about at guideline speed. Some holes are house-lined but not obstrusive.
Pricey but you get value for what you pay for. Definitely will return.
Unbearable Pace
Squeezed too many groups in at twilight. Too 3 hours to play 9 holes. Paid for 18 and tried to get as many in before sunset.
Challenging track
Fairways and greens excellent condition. Challenges on every hole. The greens were fast today and tricky.
Staff made check in smooth. I played here at least 5 years ago. Now I am a better player and will make this course part of my regular rotation.
Challenging But Fair
Great conditions and pace of play. Lots of elevation changes with great views if Yorba Linda. Felt the course was challenging in design but you were never penalized when hitting a good shot. Would definitely play there again.
Buyer beware
The facilities are above par for a public course. The carts have GPS but one can scarcely use the feature as the carts are blocked on over half the fairways. Mostly cart path only.
1st Time, Looking forward to 2nd
I played pretty good and got paired with some inexperienced players that were there to pre-celebrate for their wedding. The weather was misty for the first 5 holes. I was impressed with the layout and challenges. It has some tight spots and will challenge your shot making on approach shots. Not real long, greens were as good as I have seen, fairways too, tee boxes needs some love. The Covid rules are quirky here, they had nice pins with ball lifts on the back, but the front were these short driveway markers that were tough to shoot with a rang finder. You can see the wear on the course from no sand to fill divots and rakes for bunkers, but it is a good track worth playing. Looking forward to another round.
Great Experience if someone would keep people moving
This is an excellent course in terrific shape. We had a great front nine but for some reason as we moved to the back play came nearly to a halt.
We played the front in about 90 minutes then played only 5 in the next 90 minutes. Ended up giving up and driving in from the 15th hole.
Thanks,
Out of control
There is no Marshall. Many teams get stuck in the middle of the round. Out of control! Three teams intervened before and after our team. I think they' were going to go around 27 or 36 holes. It's a mess.
Great staff/great course
Came out to play with a friend and booked the wrong date online. Brian (and Luis) performed a miracle and got us out without penalty. The starter found us a spot right away and was very friendly as well. Super impressed with the friendliness and layout of the course. This is exactly why people pay a little extra to play here. We'll definitely be back!
Pleasant round today
First, pace of play was excellent, never had to wait on any holes or saw group in front or back after first tee. Course was in great shape. Greens firm, fast, and putt true .Did not see any major issues with tee boxes or fairways looked great to me. Really like course layout, sometimes helpful and sometimes punishing you don't hit in the correct part of the Fairway or green Employees are always top class, pleasant, and make you feel welcome.
Back Open!
Played for the first time since the coronavirus closure. Course was in excellent shape fairways were fantastic as usual, rough was not too long and greens rolled true, although were quite a bit slower than I usually see at Black Gold. Pace of play was fantastic given the new coronavirus changes. Our two-some finished in just over four hours while trailing a foursome that kept up a good pace. Makes me wish these changes as far as tee-time scheduling remain lol. Can’t wait to come back!
Great course
Course offers it challenge but the greens were well maintained. We enjoyed ourle play there today.. Grateful we had a cart.
Always fun
My club closes on Monday and I have not played due to this pandemic thing so my wife and I decided to play a quick 9 hole on Monday late afternoon.
Course's layout is good with few challenging holes if you play from the tips.
They could improve a lot by taking care of tee boxes as they aren't kept up to the same level as the course. Fairways are nice and greens were slow. However, we really had a great time. We seldom play here as we live literally right next to the course..
