del Lago Golf Club
About
del Lago Golf Club sits at an elevation of 3,400 feet, enjoying a temperature that is five degrees cooler than Tucson in the summer, which makes a big difference under the hot Arizona sun. Winding through the hills and valleys of the high desert, the golf course features over 120 feet of elevation changes that present tricky uneven lies. The dramatic undulations also offer beautiful views of the Rincon and Santa Catalinas Mountain ranges. Golfers start at the highest point on the course and then play down into the valley before getting to the back nine, which plays along the Pantano Wash. The first hole is the only forced carry on the course, the remaining holes are friendlier off the tees. Seven lakes dot the golf course, coming into play on six holes, and there is also heavy bunkering around the greens.

Excellently designed course, just needs upgrades. Cart paths and a few difficult to maintain areas in the fairways.
Course is Fun To Play
Only real criticism is SLOW PLAY! Our round was almost five hours and frustrating.on almost every hole. Greens were in good shape, albeit slower than expected. So, putts were hard to read for both speed and break. Fairways in good shape and hitting them is at a premium. Will play again, but hopefully without the slow play we experienced.
Resident Rates
I have lived in Del Lago since 2008. Why do we not have resident Rates or Veteran rates? I would play more and use the restaurant more, which means more revenue. However, I have discovered that rates will increase? That only means that I will play elsewhere. I would love to eat, drink and play here, that's one of the reasons I moved here, besides the peaceful town of Vail. I believe the Del Lago Golf course could thrive and have more revenue if residents could play at more reasonable rates, since we live and pay taxes here. This would only invite residents to play more and spend more at the clubhouse and restaurant.
Gem in Tucson area
Just 20 minutes south of Tucson, the course is a hidden gem. Pace of play was great. Conditions were fantastic for this time of year. It was very windy but did not diminish the enjoyment. Nice driving range and great carts. A couple bunkers were void of sand.
We will definitely return.
It is gettting better each week
I play del Lago weekly and run the del Lago Men's League for Events so I see the course of time. For those who have not played del Lago it is a truely Championship layout - one of the best in Tucson, but over the years the course condition, traps, greens, desert area have had varying degrees of conditions. Generally the traps have not been maintained well and are very inconsistent. Greens go from great to slow as molasses. All that being said, in my seven years at del Lago this is the best overseed season I have seen. Lots of grass on greens and fairways. the problem is speed. Superintendent just did not want to cut the greens down. He has now and will continue each week unti they are running around 10 to 10.5 on stemp. Yesterday the course was really good with fairways cut down(not totall down but much better) and greens were running very nice and smooth. They continue to add sand to traps and are doing a better job with maintaining. We all have to rack again as we got away from that during Covid. Overall the course is really looking good and in two or so weeks it will be a great test. Layout when greens get fast and fairways are cut down is a true challenge. Well worth the trip to play a great layout.
I have been playing this course for over 25 years. The course ha had its ups and downs. The course is now in good shape however the bunkers and cart paths are terrible. The bunkers have been bad for a couple of years and it seems that the owner of the course doesn't want to repair them and make them playable.. the cart paths have been bad for quite a while. It is too bad because otherwise it is a very nice course.
Groundskeepers
I noticed on some holes, particularly #12, that whoever does goes around and trims trees leaves it in large piles off to side of the golf course for months on end. This attracts rat nests within these piles which in turn attracts rattlesnakes to a buffet right next to the fairways. I’ve never played on a golf course where the groundskeepers didn’t clean up after trimming trees, they just create piles next to the golf course at Del Lago. Is it that hard to just rent a wood chipper and clean up what you trim?
Great course and staff
Everyone we encountered at this golf course was friendly and professional. The course itself was in great shape, challenging and fun to play.
Slow play. Rude patrons.
Very slow play. Waited on every tee box, often 5+ minutes.
Local patrons behind us hit our cart once and twice criticized us for slow play. Not true, very rude. Acted like they owned the place and didn't tolerate visiting players.
Poor value
For what we paid the course was not good. Greens need rolled and had uneven growth making putting very irregular. Bunkers are terrible and no divot sand on tee boxes. Pace of play was very very slow. Poor value.
Can’t Bring Kids
Tried to bring my 5 year old for a round. They told me I’d have to hold him on my lap and can’t have a cart for us. I tried to pay a riders fee. They still said no. I’ll never come here again. I was told it was their new golf directors policy. He didn’t care if a kid wanted to watch their Dad play. Course will always be 3 out of 5. I’ve played here a ton. It’s never better than that. But they’ll try to charge you this way. They started this new bag system in stead of baskets and they never have any. The starter never knows where the balls are, most of the workers complain about the conditions. Go somewhere else and have a far better round for less.
Excellent Course, Questionable Pace Requirements
Overall, this is a fantastic course. Everything was in great shape, even greens just after overseeding. Challenging course which challenges you at every tee shot as you are not able to swing and play from anywhere. If you are not straight bring some extra balls!
Only two concerns from my experience and first time playing. First was it is hard to understand your distances without very easy to find markers. There are markers on the fairways and along the path, but not always found or existing from what I saw. Not having my GPS app or a range finder made getting distances hard as the fairway markers were hard to spot and as I mentioned, the yardage stakes along the path were either non existent or hard to spot. My second concern was having a marshal have our group speed up play chasing a twosome and having multiple foursomes behind us. We finished our front in 2 hours and back in 2.25 hours. Under 4.5 hour round is freaking excellent for a weekend, so it is hard to understand why we had to keep up with a twosome ahead with the pace of play we were maintaining.
DelLago had only opened a couple of days before we played due to over seating. The course is in great shape, and the pace of play was good considering we were cartpath only
We have played this course several times, and would recommend to anyone who is interested in a challenging course that is always in great shape.
All around good time
It’s been years since I have been out to Lago.. it’s a fun course and if you tend to hit it all around…they have cleared some desert areas to help w forgiveness. They are just coming out of over-seed so expect soft and somewhat inconsistent conditions. We were cart path only and still got around in just under 4 hours… a few more days and that restriction will be lifted. So,,, if you haven’t been out to Del Lago in awhile give it a go. If you live in the area go twice!
I totally agree with this review. Wonderful course layout and design and very challenging. Condition is honestly the best it has been in 7 years I have been playing it. They unfortunately as this reviewer said do not support locals over anyone else and plans are to get worse. I think they have forgotten who supports them during the entire year. This is course is well worth playing now before rates go up. You will enjoy the course and bring your A game as you will need it.
