DarkHorse Golf Club
About
Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, DarkHorse Golf Club tumbles across a magnificent landscape that once served as a cattle ranch. The course incorporates a variety of elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic. This tough layout is definitely not for the faint of heart. From short par 3s to monstrous par 5s, this course has a little bit of everything. The severely sloped greens demand accuracy and the bunkers were strategically placed to provide a multitude of shot-making opportunities. Tricky doglegs and uphill and downhill lies aren't the only challenges you'll face, there are also several water hazards that come into play throughout and an abundance of trees that make it even more difficult to navigate your ball. DarkHorse G.C. is situated 50 miles east of Sacramento and though it might be a bit of a drive to get there, local golfers consider the round well worth the trip.

Course was fine but
Every thing else was a mess the bathrooms were disgusting. No toilet paper in the stall.
No water in any water jug on the course nor anyone driving around selling anything.
For 70+ dollars I will not be going back.
A Beautiful adventure
Beautiful adventure
I wonderful remote location away from crowded. Housing developments.
The course was wonderful the great layout with a lot of elevated tees and the greens were amazingly smooth and beautiful
Challenging and beautiful course.
The course is in great shape. Enjoy the challenging layout, with every hole is a different experience.
Lots of elevation changes from hole to hole with strategically placed bunkers and streams throughout the course. Hope next time clubhouse is fully stocked, only had one hat with logo which was too small.
Staff was pleasent. Will try again on next trip to area.
Great condition, challenging course, low budget amenities
Great mid day round of golf. Course is challenging with some unique holes and greens that are fast and undulating. Fairways and greens in great shape. Easy to lose a ball in the thick rough. For a $79 round, I would expect better than an old beater golf cart, no GPS, no golf hole marker signs, no clubhouse, only food on or off the course was snacks. Hopefully the present ownership has plans on adding some better amenities
Great layout but not for beginners.
Course is in fantastic shape from tee to green. Bunkers are awesome. The only issue like others have said is that it’s over 5 hours to get around the course. Took us 5 hours and 25 minutes today. Waited on every tee box from #3 on. There is a lot of water around the course so that’s a good thing since we never say the drink cart person after #4. Beginners should not play. Good thing it’s beautiful here.
Worst Customer Service!
I can’t tell enough people to not play Darkhorse or to use Golfnow for booking tee times. Our 4th called me the morning of the tee time with Covid-19 symptoms...I informed the starter of this and he said “Bummer, no worries” What I wasn’t expecting is to get charged for the 4th spot by Golfnow, and was pushed by Darkhorse!! No one told me that this would happen, nor have I ever been charged for not a full foresome at any course ever!! Darkhorse needs to get some halfway decent golf carts before they expect people to pay $89 /person!! Zero amenities, no clubhouse, and terrible management. If I ever play this course again it will be too soon! Stay away and find many more courses to play in the area!!
Slow play and close to zero amenities
Had a tourney for 20 players. We all got there extra early for breakfast. They do not have a clubhouse. Then they couldn’t hand out golf carts because they don’t have very many. We had to stand around for 1.5 hours and got carts when previous golfers returned them, which was just before our tourney starting time. Then we found out they do not have alcohol. Imagine a tourney without a clubhouse or alcohol. Very disappointing. Would be nice when I booked the tourney they informed me of that. Then took 6 hours to play. Once waited 45 mins on 1 hole, super backed up. As for the course, great condition and nice layout. Fun to play if you just have a foursome and know beforehand that there isn’t a clubhouse, alcohol and a pro shop so you can come prepared. But for a tournament, not good at all. Again, disappointed when I booked the tourney they did not inform me of their facility situation.
Nice course but slow pace of play
The course was in great shape and love the new sand in the bunkers but the waiting at every hole and the lack of alcohol and clubhouse wasn’t worth the trip out from the Bay Area. Had every intention of playing at least 27 holes but left due to the terrible pace of play (over 5 hours). Not sure what happened to the clubhouse and golf shop but won’t make another trip in the near future.
Challenging but fair
Great layout. No two holes were the same. Smooth, quick greens with plenty of undulation.
Many holes were difficult to judge the aimpoint for your tee shot. A little explanation of the hole layout would be helpful.
Best course in the area!
Great layout, greens consistent. Fairway rough difficult, but probably just the time of the year.
Championship Layout
Love this track. If it had the clubhouse to along with the excellent course then it would twice the traffic. To me it’s a top 5 course in CA you can play.
Best Course in Our Area
Was a long round due to pace of play from the 3-4somes ahead of us, and people taking their time on the green. From the moment I was on the practice green I was in awe of how beautiful the course was and how quiet it was, just sounds of birds and the creeks running. Favorite hole was the 3rd par 3 I shoot from blacks was surprised to be on in one at 240, for a birdie. Greens are fast and challenging, similar to the ridge, but the course itself was designed flawlessly. Almost every tee shot was from an elevation making for scenic pictures off each box.
Mind you they do not have a pro shop or clubhouse like most courses, teal, turkey, the ridge, Whitney, Morgan creek, Lincoln hills, from what they don’t have the make up on the course with excellent course maintenance and care, Will definitely be back to play this course. As much as I can, blew every other course we’ve payed out of the area with design and care. Felt like empire with a mix of Whitney oaks. Don’t hesitate to give this course a try and test your skill.
Great Course, Long round
I’ve played a lot of golf but never have I ever taken almost 6 hours to play 18 holes. Our tee time was at 10, and make sure you come stocked up because the shack that’s supposed to be the “pro shop” didn’t have a single ball or an ounce of alcohol or any food.
They told us there was a shotgun tournament starting on the front 9 at 1. Well it took us 3 hours to finish the front 9 because of the super slow pace of play and when we got to the back 9 there was an extra group for the tournament in front of us plus an extra group they decided to squeeze in in front of us. We finished around 350 and that’s after the groups in front of us started to pick up and our pace started to get better.
Overall this course is a beautiful, well kept and has great scenery. I would love to play here more but the pace of play along with the lack of amenities really makes it hard to play here. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time to finish your round.
