Winchester Country Club
I have fond memories of playing here in 2013 and wanted to play this private course again. The foothills of the Sierra Nevada's are a fabulous setting for any golf course and Robert Trent Jones did a magnificent job of utilizing this rolling landscape to create Winchester Country Club.
Spent a full hour on the driving range and practice putting green. The starter had me out at my scheduled time. There are plenty of options for golfers off the tee boxes and felt I would do OK playing the Blue/White combo's which stretched out to 6063 yds...perfect.
The opening hole calls for a partially blind tee shot over a rise which will leave you a slightly downhill approach shot into a small green protected by a wicked false front up the left side. A fair test for an opening hole, but it only gets better.
Most of the fairways are framed by tall pine and mature oak trees. The numerous elevation changes, dog leg lefts and rights and brilliant white sand bunkers placed in all the right spots. There are a few water hazards scattered throughout to remind you to keep you on your toes. The greens were as fast as ever and asked for your full attention regarding line and pace. Putts rolled exactly where they were directed.
Throughout the property you have spectacular views.
There are a number of fun and memorable holes that include 3, 7, 10, 14, 15 and 18. It would be pretty hard not to enjoy your round at Winchester Country Club.

Very interesting excellent course to play.Views spectacular and the layout beautifully carved into the terrain.I will definitely play again when I return from CT.If you’re up for a challenge and a distinctly different golf course this is it.
You'll never get bored golfing at Winchester
Of all of the Northern CA golf courses this one is set up to challenge and never be boring. Golf all year round. The greens were in great condition, traps very wet due to all of the recent rains. After golfing here most other courses are easier. It does eat golf balls as there aren't parallel fairways. Off the fairway drives are GONE. Putting is a challenge with undulations but the greens are in great shape. Very nice members and staff.
Slick Winchester
The word slick would describe this place right now: Greens, slippery slick, awesome! Around greens, not so slick, if you miss a green the ball will be plugged or in a bad lie, messy in fact and needs attention; hydro seed, grass, or just leave it dry so we can putt up the rough slopes. Too wet.
That's the only negative, Sand is fine, tees are a bit wet but ok, fairways a bit wet but ok.
You cannot fake it out here and lay up and expect to save par. You have to go at pins. One of the funner tests of accuracy in the valley, as being below hole is very important on most holes, crucial on 1 and 18 which are easy driving holes but tough greens! Great set up of holes. Wonderful views, great golf course. Hole 10 is something else.
Would be five stars if not so wet, heat is one thing, not having the grass is another. Too pricey for conditions! You cant water dirt and expect it to grow. Hydro seed is the only fix to those problems around the greens, then water it before it dries overnight! Then charge what you want for your product. At the grocery store, Do you buy the wilted goods? Nope. You'd expect a deal, 30%, 50% off.
I see the rates posted for the weeks ahead and the course is at full retail $115 or so when course is worth a $55 premium. That's what Cinnabar, Poppy, Bayonet/Blackhorse charge. Down the street at Darkhorse its $30.
Too much $ charged here, but a remarkable course.
Beautiful
Took my husband for Father's day!
We were a twosome and able to play just the 2 of us!
A must play in your golf history!
Amazing place and course. Didn’t like getting bumped by members 20 minutes but it’s in the confirmation that it’s possible, so....
Greens were bumpy maybe should have been rolled again?
5 + hour pace of play so not good for golf but frankly the surroundings are so amazing you are just in awe.
A must play in California!!
Great Experience and Excellent Course!
Played here multiple times but not in the last few years. Perfect day, course and greens were in excellent condition. Well manicured as always,
sand traps were perfect also and pace of play was less than 4 hours, hardly any one on the course. Staff was friendly and helpful. Highly recommend playing it.
A Course Worth Playing
First time playing this course. A little pricey but once in a while I will splurge. All of the employees were very nice. Gentleman in pro shop explained everything to me, where the driving range was, tee boxes who to check in with etc. The course was in excellent shape, greens, fairways, tee boxes and sand traps with real sand. Not many people on the course this day which was great, the round went quick and was enjoyable. Like any course it would be nice to have some course knowledge, so now I have some. Will play this course again as it is a very nice course with some nice scenery and wildlife.

Beautiful course, a must play!
Very friendly staff, nice driving range. Golf carts are like new. Take your camera, great pictures to take.
This course has great features.
We all like the course, greens are little tricky. Course in great shape some holes has nice view. Staffs are very nice and helpful, We like to play again, price wise little expensive. The Golf Now sent me 25% off the green fee coupon, that help to knock down some green fee we enjoyed.
Awesome course in great condition .
Winchester is a great course and is getting back to flawless condition under new ownership . Staff meets you at your car and makes a good first impression . From the parking lot , to the pro shop , the range attendants , and the starter - to the marshals on the course - EVERYONE was friendly and helpful . The course is visually stunning and in great condition .
This is a great course.
A friend and I played on Thursday October 17, 2013. The course was exceptional. The staff was exceptional. Wewould highly recommend playing Winchester Country Club in Auburrn, CA. It's picturesque, well taken care of, and the greens were fast and in excellent shape. Go Play.
This course has the best Features
Winchester Golf Course CC is an Awesome Course , overall rating EXCELLENT !
Great track!
I was met by staff in the parking lot. Extremely friendly…..The range in good condition and not crowded, water and cold towels were provided. I was paired with another single who played from white tees while I played from the tips. Definitely playable for any handicap but back tees on several holes require fades or draws while whites allow less challenging tee balls. Great design! Good tee shots allow for legitimate birdie opportunities but attention must be paid to putts or you can easily 3-putt some greens. Great experience!
Slow play but great course
I need to golf this course again when there is not a tournament in front of me. If I had known I would not have booked as it made play VERY slow. BUT the course if wonderful and can be a challenge if you have never played here before.
Staff was fantastic, course was fun
I had a great time, used my eagle status free 4some so yeah it was a great value. But i've been here a few times before and have always been treated great, even better with the new ownership. Course was in great shape with challenging and firm greens. Friends had a great time too. Special thanks to the starter/range attendant who was cleaning everyones clubs while they were on the range, as well as sending ppl off the first Tee. Great time!
"ONE OF THE FINEST COURSES IN CALIFORNIA"
Golfers, in your lifetime you must play this course. It is heaven on earth in term of beautiful golf courses and it has all the challenges one could ask for. This course is NOT for beginners. A treasure in the hills of Auburn.
Great review. I wish all reviews on GolfAdvisor were as insightful and well-written.
