About
Nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, DarkHorse Golf Club tumbles across a magnificent landscape that once served as a cattle ranch. The course incorporates a variety of elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic. This tough layout is definitely not for the faint of heart. From short par 3s to monstrous par 5s, this course has a little bit of everything. The severely sloped greens demand accuracy and the bunkers were strategically placed to provide a multitude of shot-making opportunities. Tricky doglegs and uphill and downhill lies aren't the only challenges you'll face, there are also several water hazards that come into play throughout and an abundance of trees that make it even more difficult to navigate your ball. DarkHorse G.C. is situated 50 miles east of Sacramento and though it might be a bit of a drive to get there, local golfers consider the round well worth the trip.

Golfer Reviews
Great Course
One of my favorite courses. Very good condition and awesome layout. However, the guy at check in is extremely rude (not the first time either). They also didn’t have any decent food or drinks available.
Fun but challenging
Super fun course met some awesome regulars who were able to help me out. Lot of elevation changes throughout the course. Would highly recommend!
Not Worth the Hype
Same experience as the other negative reviews - I called in the morning and saw tons of open tee times mid-day, and staff said to come on out; it would be wide open from noon till 1:30 pm. Well, that was not the case, as the place was slammed with couples, which I found interesting. Seems the pickleball courts were spared, as Friday dates too over the golf community. Carts sucked; brakes wouldn't hold; tee boxes... forget about finding any flat lie, and they're all torn apart. Bunkers were awful, and for whatever reason, they had maintenance out all day. Guys couldn't care less about the players' experiences; they were in the way for my entire round. To add insult to an already stupid day, there was zero cart service and the cheese steak add and come-for-the-views at the end of your round they hype on the website???? Ya, the entire staff was heading home on a Friday at 4:45 pm, so I have no idea what that's all about. Pro shop- glofified shack with a walk-up window and no merch... Closed up too! When I checked in, they had no golf carts, so I had to wait 20 min for one to roll in from 18 and I spent my round worried it would die. Place sucks - I'll never play here again. Left starving and sad...
Not worth the drive
Staff isn’t friendly, course is pretty fun but not worth the hassle or the distance. No water on the courses, no beverage cart, couldn’t get to the 18th hole because they were repaving the road. Guy cutting the grass player gate keeper with no suggestion on where to go to get back so had to go back all 8 holes on the back 9 to get back and finish. Very unfriendly staff and not worth it.
First Time
It is a beautiful course.
There’s not a lot of amenities. So make sure that you bring plenty of water, snacks.
I had a cart, but there’s still a lot of up and downhill walking as the courses in the hills. I found it challenging… But I consider myself at the low end of intermediate.
Errors to fix
There’s a lot of areas where cart can’t go in and there were no signs to tell you about it. Need more signs when holes are across the street. Carts were trash when handling to you.
Golf Course Review
The golf course was in excellent condition. The minor complaint was the golf cart brake paddle could not lock, and I had to press several times to get it to lock. Otherwise, highly recommend playing the course. One of the best courses in the Sacramento area.
Fun course
Really enjoyed my round at this fun and well kept course. The course was in great condition and offered a variety of challenges with the ups and downs of the landscape, water hazards, bunkers, and weaving in and out of the surrounding homes.
Issues need to be addressed now.
Played from noon with temp in high 90’s to 4:30PM with temp over 100 degrees.
I’ve played Darkhorse many times. With the new owner years ago. The sand traps were upgraded and raised the standard of the entire course. Yesterday, the sand traps were lacking in sand depth on much the lower areas which caused the ball to fly much farther than usual.
The golf cart limitations on a number of the fairways was excessive. In some cases resulting in nearly 100 yards from the green. This may be related to the next issue.
The watering of the fairways produced a number of unmarked soggy areas where water was visible when standing on them. Therefore, forced relief to be taken in spite of no marking.
The once water containers that existed on the course have been removed, leaving only the water at the bathrooms which was made worse when there was no water/drink cart for the last 7 holes and thus leaving us feeling cutoff since it had come around twice during the first 12 holes.
Darkhorse has made some real upgrades with the covered Trackman hitting area for the driver range, the paving and upgrades of the parking area and the terrace with chairs and drinks overlooking the putting green. While the up-grades add to the course, they do not offset the poor experiences with actually playing golf. I hope these issues can be resolved and enough people play so that this course will not go the way of Auburn Valley Golf Course.
Very nice layout
conditions were in great shape except for bunkers being wet and did not have fluffy sand. And there is a lot of bunkers.
Pace of play was great and greens in great shape.
Bad Carts
Love this course and it has a lot of elevations, but the brakes on the carts are terrible. It is very frustrating trying to set the brakes. They need to invest in a different technology for the brakes.
Great course
Fun and hard..very challenging…wish they had a pro shop but driving Rand and course is wonderful..like most courses..bunkers need attention but still can not complain
Done well and not so
The course layout was excellent and challenging
Cart paths done well and greens excellent
Fairways are wide enough to keep slight miss
hits in play and gross miss hits get there just
due in the tall weeds n reeds
No clubhouse facility was strange, some weeds
in sand traps
Looking forward to playing DarkHorse again
Poor shape
Played this course a number of times but it’s been a couple of years and they have let the course go. Weeds in the sand traps, tee boxes not very nice , carts a mess. Had to wait 20 min to get a cart. Greens ok. No ball washers or trash cans on any of the holes. Used to be a nice course.
35 Minutes Late to Tee off for lack of carts. 3 hours to get to Hole 12
One of the worst golf experiences I’ve had in my golfing life.
When we arrived, we were told carts were running a few minutes behind. That’s understandable, but it ended up being a 35-minute wait past our scheduled tee time before we were able to get a cart. For a course selling tee times, it’s hard to understand how there aren’t enough carts available to keep pace with the schedule.
While waiting, I purchased a bucket of range balls for $15. Unfortunately, 10–15 of the balls were cracked and damaged. Not only was the quality poor, but hitting cracked balls with my first swings on my new irons was frustrating. To make matters worse, the course eventually started handing out free range balls because they were so far behind, meaning I paid $15 for something others were receiving for free.
Once we finally got on the course, pace of play was completely out of control. It took nearly three hours to reach the 12th hole, where there were three separate foursomes backed up on the same hole. There was no course management to address the congestion.
After spending far more time and money than expected, we decided to leave before finishing the round. I’ve played here more than 10 times over the years, but this was by far the worst experience I’ve had, and unfortunately it’s enough to make me think twice about returning.
Great layout!
One of my favorite courses. Love the layout and the mountain vibes. Concerns are that the maintenance is a bit rough. Weeds and high grass are encroaching and the bunkers need some TLC. Overall the greens are in great shape, but the fact that people still refuse to fix their pitch marks is sad. Every green I fix at least 3-4 extra pitch marks. Darkhorse is still a favorite, but not worth it at full price.
"owner" was drunk and was looking for a fight.
. We were headed to hole number one and noticed that our golf cart looked like it has recently been flipped. The other car would not break no matter how hard you pressed on it. We simply tried to go exchange the carts. We were met with a very aggressive who he called himself. The owner. Start shaking the cart while we were in it. And telling us it's the way it is. It's twice as much in Vegas... I paid almost $500 for this Father's Day outing with my brothers and dad .While slurring and spitting his words, he tried to get in my older brother's face. Have multiple videos. There's multiple witnesses. I believe some of them members you really need to check your security film. This is unacceptable behavior. May seek legal action
