Auchmill Golf Course

About
Offering inspiring views of Aberdeen and Aberdeen Airport, Auchmill Golf Club is a municipal golf course with a world-class pedigree. Originally built in the early 1970s as a nine-hole course and later extended to a full 18, Auchmill was designed by the triumvirate of Brian Hugget, Neil Coles and Roger Dyer, meaning the course was laid out with the experience of a top golf course architect (Dyer), a former Ryder Club player (Coles) and a known British pro (Hugget).
Auchmill was designed to take advantage of its unique topography, meaning golfers will be challenged by a variety of lies andinteresting hole placements. Four par 5s will have long hitters reaching for their big guns, while tricky par 3s and challenging par 4s will have golfers of all levels working to put down a good score.
This wooded parkland course that plays to nearly 6,000 yards will not just give you interesting holes that are aptly and cunningly named - like "The Frog" and "The Quarry" - but it will also give players a great golfing experience for their money. With green fees ranging from £15 to £20, Auchmill Golf Club offers golfers a great golfing experience without denting their wallet.

Just off the 4th tee “very nice” NOT Photo submitted by Steve5755845 on 08/09/2020
A Hidden Gem
Booked a 8.45 tee time. Nobody on the course apart from a few dog walkers. Everybody we met was very friendly and courteous. The course is in great condition despite heavy overnight rain. Probably the best value for money for a round of golf in the Aberdeen area.
Much improved
First time playing course for 5 years. The course back then was tired and in poor overall condition. What a difference now. There has obviously been an immense amount of work put in to bringing the course back to its best. The greenkeeper and volunteer staff should be congratulated on their efforts. Particular praise for the condition of greens .
Brilliant
I have played this course since I was a kid and it is still a favourite of mine, can be rough around the edges but I feel that’s not down to the course but the area. If security of the course is upgraded so dog walkers and the people on bikes was prevented it would be amazing. Worth playing and provides a good challenge.
Too many dog walkers on the golf course shouldn’t be allowed dogs or people not playing golf on the course
Quality Course, Great Value for Money
Great course, tough track to be fair! If you have a natural slice/fade it’s tough because a lot of dogleg left holes.
Fair few blind tee shots so for a first time player it is tricky!
The par 3’s are class! All of them are gettable holes and it’s overall a good course! The rough is thick and tough so best to keep the ball on the fairway!
The greens had been rolled this morning so the greens were in very good condition and running quick!
Had a great day!
Worth a visit
Good layout, great views and reasonable condition.
The greens aren’t great, a few bare patches but overall it’s well worth a visit.
There’s a real variety of holes so you’ll prob hit every club in the bag.
Clubhouse not always open.
Review
Turned up this morning looking for a game. Guy at starters was friendly and helpful. I enjoyed my game. Greens were quite fast and good. Reasonably generous fairways. Some bunkers gur and under construction. I would play again
Auchmill
I’ve been playing this course for almost 30 years now and was disappointed to find it in its current condition since it’s no longer a council course you would expect it to be better maintained than the nearby council courses but in fact it’s way behind. Greens were poor, if your ball ran off the fairway it was a struggle to find in the first cut the bunkers had more stones than sand although very few bunkers are even still playable trees from storms over the past few years still haven’t been dealt with hard to recommend in its current state
A course that actually is good but does, indeed, need some work…..
Having seen the course looking horrendous in recent years was pleasantly surprised by the condition early May. Starter informed me 6 people have been working on the course so perhaps things are looking up. Fairways great but greens inconsistently varied from slow to lightning fast. If you’re unlucky enough to hit the deep rough good luck,it’s brutal. And bunkers,as previously mentioned, are “questionable “. Dog walkers are indeed an issue but going by the amount of dog skitters on the course some of them could be doing with a golf ball off the heid. The walkers, not the dogs. If it is 6 greenkeepers or just the one, they deserve great credit as the course has been turned around fantastically well. With a bit more work this could be a wee gem.
A course that could be good but needs work
I turned up for a tee time with a sign that said go to the clubhouse, which was closed. Then went to the starter box only to find out that it too was closed. Met with a sign stating “Starter on course report to clubhouse” which as previously mentioned, was closed.
I was then met by the starter whilst walking to the first tee and confirmed my name, however no scorecard given.
Course is challenging, however when the fairway looks like first cut of rough it is hard to tell what is fairway and what’s not. Bunkers are horrendous and haven’t been maintained with beer cans and other things in them.
Parts of the course are boggy and unplayable.
A massive issue (out of control of the course) is dog walkers, it can be infuriating when trying to tee off and a dog walkers just walks out in-front of you and then glare at you, almost as if you are inconveniencing them!
I read that it is a single green keeper responsible for the course and I take my hat off to him! It’s a massive course and must be hard to maintain.
In terms of council courses in Aberdeen there are better (and cheaper) alternatives which are far better than this.
I will not be returning until improvements are made.
Good course verry good value can't complain for the price
