Neglected
Maybe due to Covid, but course has seen better days, lot's of crab grass, unraked bunkers, terrible tee boxes, etc. you can hit perfect tee shots and not be able to find your ball, Could be a very nice course in the middle of the city, easy to get there, but very neglected and overpriced for the conditions
Pleasantly surprised
Despite the heavy play, the course was in excellent condition.though the tee boxes do need some work. Greens were smooth and putting was great. Pace of play was under 4 hour s with a cart. After recently playing Staten Island courses which are not in good condition I was playing as I got a hot deal at the right time, very happy I did as it was an enjoyable round. Lastly, bunkers need work as they more like waste bunkers as they have very little sand.
Avoid at all costs
While there was some damage from the recent storms, it's very clear that this is a goat track and doesn't care. Staff is warm and friendly but management doesn't equip them with tools for the job. If you're "always about 30 minutes behind on the tee shot" and it was 50 min behind the tee sheet when I played, then that's a massive problem. I watched 8 groups go off ahead of us where 3 out of 4 players take 2-3 breakfast balls each and the starter did nothing about it. You should be encouraging scramble play for clearly new players. You can't sell 9 min tee times, have no rangers and not enforce any kind of pace of pay. Insane. On top of that, every single bunker and tee box was beyond disgusting. I'll never return.
Nothing has changed much…
The big problem on the course is maintenance. Fairways and greens were in okay shape, but not great. The practice green had about an inch of grass on it so it was unusable. Bunkers looked like they hadn’t been raked in months with huge footprints throughout. Biggest headache was the rough. There is no first cut or second cut of rough. If you miss a fairway or a green, be prepared to spend several minutes looking for your ball. Everywhere you look on the course, you see players searching for balls in the rough. If you’re lucky it will be only 3 inches, but many spots are 6 inches to over a foot of rough. Our round took over 4 1/2 rounds. For $56 as resident seniors, we felt we didn’t get our money’s worth. We were happy to finally get off the course and will play here again only as a last resort.
Worst conditions I have EVER played
Please save your money and go somewhere else…anywhere else! The ruffs played like out of bounds, traps have not been touched since pre-COVID19. I can’t believe they can charge full price for these types of conditions.
Will not come back!!
Local muni that continues to go downhill
American Golf has ceased to give a crap about this course. The greens are decent, the bunkers are a disgrace and no one monitors pace of play. The course is way overpriced for what you get. Used to be ok, but since AG is abandoning the golf course management business in favor of the clown carnival business (also known as the Top Golf model) and their contract is up in the next couple of years, they are now taking as much advantage of NYC as they can and just using this course as a cash source without putting anything back into it. I won't be playing here again until new management takes over (which can't come soon enough).
Surprised how decent it was…
Havent played Dyker in about 6 yrs. heard to many horror stories about course conditions and slow play. I only played because of a Hot deal i got for $40 included cart.
Greens were in great shape, tee boxes need some TLC. Bunkers are a horror show.
Staff was very friendly..
Played 4 hrs 30 min on a week day.
For $40, well well well worth it… If I had to pay more, I think I would have went somewhere else…
Struggling like other public courses
I read the 3 star review, and knew it was because people were just bitter about nyc public courses and what the pandemic did. I wanted to make sure that the course was legit 3 stars. It was.
Pros:
Grass is grown in everywhere, very green
Layout is fair for all golfers of all levels
Carts were fast, check in was easy
Greens are undulating, but in a fun way.
They try to send foursomes off together, making singles wait for bigger groups.
Cons:
Bunkers were all large and in great spots on the golf course…but in poor disrepair.
Greens were slooooooow.
Rough was long, which made it difficult, but it seemed like they were long out of neglect and not intentional difficulty.
No ranger. We were clipping along as a foursome great for 14 holes, then the last 4 took 60 min because the mixed foursome in front of us were not good but they thought it was the US open.
Where there is no grass (like some tee boxes) there is sand. Which I don’t have to tell you changes the way you hit a shot.
It has a lot of potential to be great and looks like at one time it was. It has an old clubhouse and needs some investment. Price is fair - $40 for a cart at 1227 is probably one of the best in the city.
Rough Needs to be Cut
The rough on most holes was pretty long which led to 5 minute search parties trying to find balls on multiple holes. Sand traps are mostly dirt but I was still able to play out of them without much trouble. Some tee boxes are lacking in grass, but I don't find that to be so terrible as long as they are relatively flat (which they are). Greens are in good shape though!
