Rating 68.3

Short but very demanding, small well kept plateau greens. Some very memorable holes.

Swanston G.C is a very testing course set on the North facing slopes of the pentland hills. There are some tough climbs when playing this course and your stance will rarely be level. The main hazards here are gorse bushes, not trees particularly on the 8th hole which is a 216yrd par 3 played from an elevated tee over a sea of gorse bushes, with more down the right hand side. There are six par threes and no par fives, but don't let that give you the impression that this is an easy course. Another memorable hole is the seventh which is 435yrds slightly uphill and with slight dog-leg to the left, and is nearly always playing in to a stiff breeze.

The clubhouse is small in comparison to most golf clubs but you are guaranteed a warm, friendly atmosphere and some good food once inside. All in all, this is a very good days golf for all levels of play.

Great course

We really enjoyed our round at Swanston. Quirky course with some really challenging holes. It's the kind of course which requires good course management. The greens were in excellent condition.

As visitors the guys in the shop were friendly and gave us sound advice about the course. We'll definitely be back.

Great in good weather

A clear dry windless day in November were perfect conditions for this short but challenging course. Pace was good signage helpful and challenges interesting but not too testing

Beware of sand dunes

Thought the course fairly decent with interesting holes & not on a slope as imagined. Greens had been cored with half of Portobello beach on it so the greens were disappointing. Probably be back in the summer to give it a fair chance.

Fast round on course with great views

Blue sky, late October day and played a fast round with no hold ups. Friendly reception when I arrived. Some great, testing par 3s. A few of the greens were aerated but that's totally understandable at this time of the year - course in a good condition given the amount of rain we've had in Oct.

Nothing missing

For the price, a great game. Good views, not many other players and a fine Brasserie for lunch afterwards. A real find and so close to the city.

Hilly

Very hilly course with some severe side slopes. Not too long and a few great par 3 holes. I enjoyed it but could be seen as a bit gimmicky. I shot 91-good for me so I like it.

About accuracy not power

The course us set on the side of the Pentland Hills with stunning views of Edinburgh. The greens are small often with bunkers around and many fairways slanted. So whilst holes not long you have to work for your pars by being accurate.

Played late March after 2 weeks of persistent rain. The course was in amazing condition for the time of year.
