Course needs work done
Have not played this course for about 4 years, we stopped playing there due to the poor condition it was in due mostly to the bad drainage and the course upkeep. Sorry to say the the course was worse than expected, drainage still a major problem all over the course but worse still the greens were in a terrible state which made putting a bit of a joke. I don't think they have done any work to improve this course over the years, and I will definitely not be back.
Unbelievably bad
I have never played here before, but I had heard all the stories about poor drainage. I just didn't expect it to be as bad. Yes we have had a lot of snow, but this course is just a bog. I have played municipal courses that are far superior to this course. We are at the end of April now, so there should be no excuses. This is linked to a hotel chain, but not 1 member of staff was on this course trying to rectify the mess that it is in. 5 winter greens today and also no play allowed on the fairways. A complete waste of money
Hi there,
Thanks again. The greens staff came in at 6am that Sunday, so more than likely on the back nine when you teed of as they work from 1-18 to ensure they're not in the way of golfers.
Appreciate your comments and you'll be well versed on the clay base that we deal with at The Westerwood and the inherent issues that causes regards drainage.
Hopefully see you again at some point in the future.
Best,
Daryn

Thanks for your response.
Yes it was a Sunday, but we teed off at 8.20, so staff should have been visible. As a member of the construction industry for over 40 years, I do have some knowledge of drainage and how to lay footpaths. It therefore came as quite a surprise to me that despite all the reports for years of bad drainage, this course is still as bad. I have played 2 courses in the last week, where there is nowhere near the flooding that your course suffers from. Can't see any further than poor investment and bad management for the state of your course.
Hi there,
Thanks for your comments. It has certainly been a very long, hard winter with weather. With it being a Sunday that you played, this may well explain why there were so few greens staff at work - we tend to operate a skeleton staff on Sundays and they are generally in from about 6am, hence why you may not have seen them.
I hope we get some sunshine and heat in the weeks ahead and that you can come back and experience the course in its full splendour.
As an aside, where do you play your golf as a member?
Best,
Daryn
Course should be closed
Worst condition of a course I've ever played, whole course was completely waterlogged, some areas were just a mudbath
Hi there,
Thanks for your review and as per recent feedback, it has undoubtedly been quite a horrendous last 4 months in terms of rainfall. We have tried to accommodate players on the course of late when many of our neighbouring courses have been closed as we are aware some people have made quite a journey to get to us and to disappoint them further by having absolutely no golf wasn't a great option.
You will have noticed very little traffic on the course the day that you played as testament to this.
Hopefully we will see you back next season and you can revel in the work that is being done currently on the course. Exciting times ahead!
Thanks again!
Such a shame
Played today in a fourball and frankly the course should not have been open. We lost almost a dozen balls between us and only two of them were awol, the others were lost in the fairway or first cut of rough due to the horrendously wet conditions. No mention either from the starter of the 5 winter greens in play. Unfortunately with the new course layout there is nowhere near to the clubhouse to walk in which we would definitely had done if presented with the opportunity. The course was an absolute quagmire and should definitely been closed to play, as a group we were causing more damage to the course and amazingly we spotted players out in buggies absolutely destroying already sodden fairways - sadly cash appears to be priority at Westerwood and summed up by the closure of the pro shop to be replaced by a pokey starters hut. We will not be back.
Hi there,
Thanks for your review. I am sad to hear that you didn't have a good day. The weather, as you will no doubt be aware, has been less than kind this year. As for buggies in the fairway, all drivers are minded to keep to the buggy paths, but sadly not everyone adheres to this which in turn causes damage as you intimated.
As for returning, I sincerely hope that you give The Westerwood another opportunity to impress you as there are some very exciting plans ahead in the short to medium term.
Thanks again!
Bring your wellies!
This is a local course to me and I am a member at another club around 10 miles away. I have played the course 2 or 3 times in the past and I do remember the course being rather wet in places, however it was horrendously wet, and probably the worst golf course I have ever played. (Sorry, but the owners really need to know this and do something about it).
This recent visit was part of a society visit and the course layout has changed since I last played. However, what hasn't changed is the wet conditions and in actual fact it was horrendous!
I don't normally like to criticise golf courses too much and too often but the course and fairways were sodden. The greens were also very wet and extremely slow. In comparison to the current condition of my own course (which has of course has been subject to the same great Scottish summer weather!), it is like playing a links course compared to Westerwood.
It seems to me that all the money invested in the resort has been to the extreme detriment of the golf course. The clubhouse, restaurant and spa are all fantastically modern and decorated. Although whilst on that note, the food and drink prices are ridiculous e.g. £7 for sandwiches, £28 for afternoon tea!
I think the resort owners have to remember where they are located i.e. Cumbernauld! There are other local golf courses where you can get a really good round of golf and a bite to eat for a fraction of the cost at Westerwood.
This is a real shame because the course could really be spectacular as the new layout is challenging. The course is also built on a hill, so why is the drainage so awful?
My playing colleagues were all of the same opinion, they hadn't played it in a while and it will be a long while before we play it again.
Hi there,
Thanks for taking the time to put in a review. I've noted your concerns, specifically around the wetness of the golf course. With it having been the wettest summer in 32 years, the greens staff are up against it, but when they do get a dry moment, they get the course looking as good as can be.
I do hope you will return in the near future as there are some cracking plans moving forward regards the course.
Thanks again!
awful tiring and challenging course in bad weather. Well that's west of Scotland for you. Drainage dreadful
Thank you for taking the time to send in a review and I hope we can welcome you back again soon. As you mention, the West of Scotland is renowned for it's rainfall! I'm delighted you managed to get out on the Sunday as we were actually closed on the Friday & Saturday due to the utterly excessive rainfall we had in the previous 2 weeks. As far as I'm aware, it's been a record rainfall this year (and August/September in particular to date).
Thanks again!
Westwood Golf course should be renamed water World!
Sad to leave a poor review but I am struggling to give any positives. I guess the welcome at the starter box was polite and cheerful, best part of visit.
I live local and wanted a few holes on a Sunday morning, teed off at 10:05 ish and didn't step off the 18th until 2:15. Pace of play awful, it's not even a competition! Over 4 hours is totally c£&p, no excuses.
The course condition, dire. More moss on the fairway than grass. As I mentioned earlier I live local, and know the weather conditions. The heavy shower we had last night cannot explain how sodden the course was. When build / designed they must have used heavy clay, as I can't understand how on a hill that has natural drainage that it can hold so much water. Standing water on the greens, flooded out bunkers, tee boxes and fairways soaked to a rediculous level. They should be considering offering mats to play off to protect the fairway as it was playing like winter golf.
My suggestions to Waterworld, sorry Westerwood, get some gravel and patch up the HUGE pot holes on the pathways, get some investment in soak always to assist in drainage. The only way this course will get better if they manage to improve the drainage, just glad my shoes are waterproof as they were pushed to their limits today.
For a local course I am sorry to say I will not be back.
Hi there. I appreciate you taking the time to write a review of our golf course. I'm going to try and answer your points as best as I can:
1. I think you may have been the fourball at 10.12 with 2 buggies? Our tee sheet was completely full on Sunday from 7am with people teeing off every 8 minutes right up until your tee time and thereafter until 1pm with only a couple of tee slots available. This may account for your round taking 4 hours and 3 minutes. I must say however that I would regard this as pretty reasonable for a course that busy and one that is as long as ours.
2. As you allude to, the weather has been particularly bad this 'Summer'. We have actually had over 100ml of rain here this month alone - the wettest August for as long as we can remember frankly. To have the course open and be getting the generally positive comments we receive about the course is testament to the hard work that our green-keepers pride themselves on. Granted, drainage could always be better in inland Scotland, but as an example of our course's ability to cope with the weather, we recently had a very large party come and use our course due to their course (local to us) being shut - they were delighted they could get a game.
3. The paths are an ongoing work. Again, the level of rainfall has a detrimental effect on our paths, much like potholes on our major road networks. We do however constantly strive to improve them.
In summary, I hope we've managed to answer some of your points with sensible commentary and I would happily sit down with you and discuss your concerns over a coffee if you liked. We're always keen to help and hope that we could convince you to return and see if your experience could be improved upon. Please email us direct on westerwoodgolf@qhotels.co.uk if you'd like to take us up on the offer of a chat and a coffee. Thanks again!
A testing course for any golfer
Great round of golf at Westerwood. Fairways were a bit waterlogged here and there, but the greens were well groomed. A mixture of long and short par 4's makes Westerwood a nice course to play.
Thanks for your review and I'm delighted that you had a great round! We look forward to seeing you back up at the club again in the near future.
Refund
I didnt play as course was closed i am waiting a refund for this
Hi there. I'm sorry to see your comment. Can you please email me directly on westerwoodgolf@qhotels.co.uk with the date and time you played as well as your name. I can then try and rectify the matter for you. Thanks in advance.
Hire a buggy!!
Some nice holes and the greens were in excellent condition. The course was a bit heavy underfoot but in general in not bad knick. Although not a long course the distance between alot of greens and tees must be the furthest distance that I have ever played. I am so glad we hired a buggy otherwise it would of been a 4/5 hours for a two ball.
All in all not a bad course but layout does let it down.
Thanks for your review and I'm glad you enjoyed the benefit of a buggy! A couple of our 'green to tee' walks are enjoyable wanders through the trees, but are definitely much quicker in a buggy. We hope to see you again soon.
Thanks for your review and we hope to see you up at the course again soon.
Nice enough course & challenging but long walks between holes .
Nice course, good challenge, but long walks between holes and amenities outside golf poor.
Thank you for reviewing the course. Some of the walks are slightly longer, but none the less beautiful as a result. This is definitely why our buggies are so popular at the course however. We hope to welcome you back again soon. Thanks again!
Westerwood
Course very wet due to rain over past few days , a lot of walking between tees , and can be unsure sometimes of where to go next .
Thanks for your review and for being the first person I can remember describing the difficulty of the course as being fairly easy. I'm delighted that you were obviously hitting the ball great on the day that you played. We hope to see you back again soon. Thanks again!
Could be better
I have played this one a few times but I was disappointed that in the middle of July the quality of the greens was still poor and the winter coring was still evident. I think it struggles with drainage but looks like it requires more work. The layout is fine and it's interesting enough but falls short of other choices so probably won't rush back. After golf the hotel is very expensive at £5 a pint and food even less value so no redeeming news there. It could be a real winner with a lot of tlc but some way off just now im afraid.
Hi there,
Thanks for your review. I'm sorry to hear you thought the course wasn't up to scratch. The coring was summer work as we endeavour to get on top of the course condition and continue to improve it year on year. I'm sure you will see the benefits of this work as early as next season. Thanks again and hope to see you up at the course again soon.
Thanks for your review - always appreciated!
Much improved
Worth starting by saying I am a member of this golf club for the sake of transparency.
The Westerwood had a reputation as a long, punishing course which was kept in poor condition for some years and I had found it disappointing on previous outings. A new greenkeeper has been in post for a good bit now though and his work is really starting to bear fruit, drainage is much better than before and the overall presentation of the course is superb. Improved condition, layout changes and sensible tee and pin placement makes this course a much more enjoyable prospect nowadays, hence I joined up this year.
The course is a great layout with a good variety of holes, some favoring straight hitting, others rewarding distance. It is laid out over a large area of ground so you're never in conflict with players on other parts of the course. It is quite a long walk, so a trolley or buggy is probably advisable.
I've always found the staff and other members to be great and it's a very accommodating place for visitors with none of the stuffiness of some other clubs I've played at.
Good facilities in the hotel too for visitors.
Hope word of the course's improvements gets around and goes some way to helping restore the course's damaged reputation.
Thanks for your comments and feedback and delighted that you're seeing the fruit of the greenkeeper's labour! Lots going on at the club at the moment. Thanks again!
Perfect
The course was in a 10 out of 10 condition. I've played the course about 10 times before, the course layout is absolutely fantastic and the condition is the best I've seen. It's a great course for all handicappers. I'll definitely be back a few more times this season.
Thanks for your comments. We hope to see you back soon. We're about to be offering a 3-month trial membership for £99, so that might be a better option if you're going to play a few times. Just ask about it in the shop when you're next up. Cheers!
course extremely well presented compared with other courses in the area. Fairways and greens in excellent condition.
The 15th has to be seen
Cracking course. Very scenic and a good challenge. The par 3 15th being the pick of the holes. Only down side was the number of blind shots. A bit of a tough one if you have never been round before. A bit of a trek between some of the greens and the next tee. In great condition though and would definitely play again
Wet and boggy
Course wet and greens spiked and sandy . No buggies allowed on 4,5,6 even on the fairways due to waterlogged . Could be doing with more direction markers on some holes it's a hit and hope
Overall not as good as expected
Hi there,
Thanks for your feedback. I sincerely hope you do come back once we've had a little sunshine. The greens staff have worked tirelessly over the last 2-3 years to bring the course on and some heat and sunshine will be a blessing in that regards soon.
Like I said, hope we can welcome you back at some point to see the results of that work.
Best,
Daryn
