Prairie Landing
About
Prairie Landing Golf Club has received acclaim ever since first opening in 1995, including a four-and-a-half-star rating from Golf Digest. This West Chicago course will make you feel as though you've been transported to a seaside links course in Ireland. The prairie-style layout closely follows the tradition of classic links golf courses. Robert Trent Jones II designed the course, fully utilizing the rolling terrain. He incorporated large, undulating greens and rolling bent grass fairways. Vast swaths of native grasses stretch along the fairways and strategically placed bunkers frame the greens. There is also contoured mounding to contend with. The golf course finishes with a memorable par 5 that features fairway bunkers on the left followed by a carry over a lake to a well protected, high bowled green. Prairie Landing also boasts a practice facility that includes a driving range with target greens, four practice holes, and a nine-hole chipping and short-game area.

Fun links style course
This is one of my favorite courses in the area. It definitely helps to know the course because there are places that are okay to miss and others where you are dead. Course conditions are very good overall. The layout is varied and requires strategic decisions. If the wind is up, this course can be very difficult.
Best golf course in Chicagoland under $100
Reminded me of Harborside - excellent facilities, friendly staff, gorgeous course, and a challenging but fair Robert Trent Jones design. Why anyone would spend almost as much at a dog track like Oakbrook golf club is beyond me. I will definitely be back! About 20 percent less than Harborside and...Rates drop after 11am, 2pm, and twilight.
Cart Path Only
When we started (11:45) the course was wet but not soggy. I thought after about 6 or 7 holes that someone would have come out and said it was dry enough to ride at least 90 degrees in the fairways. Between the wind and the sunshine, the course dried out enough to ride the fairways. If you have played this course, fairways can be wide and if you are not on the cart path side, you can have some long walks between shots and the cart. My guess is that it added about an hour to the round. I like the course but not on "Cart Path Only" days.
An excellent choice for some Links golf
My favorite courses tend to get you to play all the clubs in your bag, forces you to consider carefully how to play to set up the next shot, and at the same time, offers good rewards if you're willing to take the risk. This course gives you all of that in a beautiful Links style setting. A nice practice range to warm up, and even some practice holes to get you ready for the impending round. Friendly staff, starter, and locals/regulars too. A truly enjoyable round!
AMAZING COURSE
This course is very well maintained. It sits right next to the airport so you always see the cool planes coming in and out right over the course. Great value for the money. Fun layout.
Nice Course
Course is always well maintained and a fun course. Back nine is more target golf. Greens were fast.
Fun but challenging course
This is a great links course that offers a lot of fun and challenging holes. If you're not straight with your driver then you might as well just leave it at home because if you miss the fairway....chances are you're not finding your ball. Every hole has lots of hills so a lot of the time it's impossible to see what dangers hide behind them. If you're looking for an awesome albeit challenging round then this is the place to go to.
Excellent golf course!
Prairie Landing is one of my favorite courses in the Chicagoland area. But then again I like playing links courses and that's what Prairie Landing resembles.
I was particularly impressed with the fine sand in the bunkers. This made it much easier to execute recovery shots from the sand.
Most of the fairways are wide enough to be forgiving to errant tee shots; however, whether you're hitting tee shots or approach shots stay out of the ever present fescue. This stuff swallows golf balls.
A unique feature at Prairie Landing are three regulation size warmup holes. No reservation required to play these holes. So if you get to the course early enough, you can play these warmup holes in preparation for your round.
Fun, Fair and Different
A unique layout that does a great job rewarding and punishing good and bad shots to the correct levels. In great shape, played in 4 hrs flat as a foursome and would absolutely plan to play again.
Slow Grind
It didn't help that GolfNow scheduled tee times every 3 min. so I wasn't expecting a whole lot as far as pace of play. Staff, starter and cart attendant, were very friendly. I enjoyed the course conditions and layout. It was only a little breezy but the course played extremely fair and true. I've found it to be priced a little high but definitely worth a trip if you catch a deal.
Slowest Round Eva!!!!
Tuesday, mid-morning round. Got stuck behind a 12-person mini-outing. These guys were the slowest on the greens I have ever seen. I mean, 98% of golfers do not understand how to plumb-bob, and these guys were doing it from both sides of the hole. We talked to the staff after 6 holes. They said that they talked to them, but they just won't speed up. Come on Prairie Landing...If you are going to charge a premium rate, that should come with premium service, which includes not being afraid to make a group skip a hole when they are two holes behind. I was so frustrated with the 3-hour front nine, that it was hard to take in this awesome layout with fantastic greens and bunkers!!! Hopefully, next time I get out there, the staff will do a better job of not pandering to a bunch of hacks, and make sure EVERYONE has an enjoyable day..
Prairie Landing- Great Layout!
Course in great shape. Great layout. Very slow on holiday morning. 7am tee time. Round took 5 hours.
Outstanding layout
The course is in excellent condition. Played it last week at 230pm after a golf outing expecting divots, garbage, etc., however found it to be in excellent condition. The fairways, greens, bunkers were in PGA tourney condition. I recommend this course if you are looking for an outstanding golf course. Play the right yardage for a fun round.....
Great course
Enjoyed our round as always, Prairie Landing is a fun and beautiful layout that requires some creative shot-making, course was in great condition. The wind was pretty stiff this day but we felt that added to the experience. It is a course that is really designed to be played with some wind to enhance the challenge. However, we were somewhat disappointed the halfway house was closed when we made the turn at 5pm on a holiday weekend. I understand closing up shop at this time on a typical day, but lots of golfers still out on the course behind us and navigating the clubhouse to find staff at a service area in time to make the turn and keep pace was a bit of a challenge. Otherwise a great experience, staff was friendly and accomodating.
One of my Favorites in the Area
I play Prairie Landing very frequently, as it's local. This has become one of my favorites in the area. Beautiful layout, and the course is always in excellent shape. It's challenging, yet fair, and features rolling fairways with lot's of elevation changes. This is a links style, and makes you stay in the fairway. I'm glad I discovered this when I moved to the western suburbs. Only downside is that I'm noticing it's getting extremely difficult to get a tee time, apparently the secret's out!
Great course
Only complaint and reason for the 3 star rating on amenities it that when we finished the bar and restaurant were already closed
So sorry for the inconvenience, we hope this will not influence your decision to join us for another round. Otherwise, we are glad to hear you enjoyed the course!
Disappointed
The pace of play was unacceptable (I quit after 9 holes and 3 hours. When I inquired with the staff about the pace of play I was told that I should expect that on an afternoon weekend. I was offered a rain check but declined as I cannot see myself going back anytime soon. This is a shame because I like the course but 6 hour rounds are not worth it.
We are so sorry to hear that you are disappointed with your experience. If you would like to further discuss your situation, please email us at prairielandingcc@gmail.com.
One of my favorites
I love this course, but it is usually overpriced. They need to lower the price and offer good deals regularly.
Thank you for your feedback, we will take it into consideration. Glad you enjoyed the course!
Great Course
One of the most challenging courses in the area. The course is maintained well despite the lingering cold weather. The bunkers are the best of the nine courses I played since March. Practice facility is the best in the area. Friendly staff.
The fairway divots need to be repaired more frequently.
Thank you for your feedback. We hope to have you back at the course soon!
Found a New Top 10 area favorite!
I don't know who I'm bumping from my list but I'm squeezing Prairie Landing in to my Top 10 Chicago area public courses one way or another. I have not played a course in the area quite like it but I would put it in the ranks with Blackstone, Harborside International and Highlands of Elgin.
The layout for this course is fantastic from start to finish and wow what a finish with the Par 5 #18 dogleg left. That was just fun.
Throughout the course the sand is soft, very clean and deep and very well drained but it's heavy like Great Lakes dune sand and you really have to give it all you've got to clear it . It's also plentiful and it is very likely you will find it at some point.
I particularly enjoyed the way the terrain feeds into (or away from) the greens and really makes you think about your where you should best land your approach. Greens were in excellent shape, very fast and firm but not so firm that it doesn't hold your ball on attack.
Most courses I play have one or two memorable holes that I look forward to playing each time out but there are several on this course that I would love to play again and again: #5,#7, #11,#12, and especially #18 are in my opinion what most golfers look forward to in terms of aesthetics and overall challenge.
The only issue with the physical course I had during this round was with the bumpiness of the cart path which can be repaired. The other issue had nothing to do with the course itself but with a threesome hitting into my threesome even though we were 18 minutes ahead of pace even keeping up well with a twosome ahead of us. I mean come on guys, here we were teeing up at hole #9 at the 1hr:30min mark and you're going to hit into us?! We happily let them through at the turn only to find these guys weren't raking the bunkers, fixing their ball marks or filling their divots. This sort of rude and careless play is unfortunate for course staff and other golfers alike and should not be tolerated. I should have spoken up but instead shook it off to enjoy the day hoping that I never encounter them again. Even taking 20 minutes at the turn, we still finished our round at 3'54" well ahead of their requested pace of 4:15 .
I am very much looking forward to returning to play Prairie Landing again.
