About
Prairie Landing Golf Club has received acclaim ever since first opening in 1995, including a four-and-a-half-star rating from Golf Digest. This West Chicago course will make you feel as though you've been transported to a seaside links course in Ireland. The prairie-style layout closely follows the tradition of classic links golf courses. Robert Trent Jones II designed the course, fully utilizing the rolling terrain. He incorporated large, undulating greens and rolling bent grass fairways. Vast swaths of native grasses stretch along the fairways and strategically placed bunkers frame the greens. There is also contoured mounding to contend with. The golf course finishes with a memorable par 5 that features fairway bunkers on the left followed by a carry over a lake to a well protected, high bowled green. Prairie Landing also boasts a practice facility that includes a driving range with target greens, four practice holes, and a nine-hole chipping and short-game area.

Found a New Top 10 area favorite!
I don't know who I'm bumping from my list but I'm squeezing Prairie Landing in to my Top 10 Chicago area public courses one way or another. I have not played a course in the area quite like it but I would put it in the ranks with Blackstone, Harborside International and Highlands of Elgin.
The layout for this course is fantastic from start to finish and wow what a finish with the Par 5 #18 dogleg left. That was just fun.
Throughout the course the sand is soft, very clean and deep and very well drained but it's heavy like Great Lakes dune sand and you really have to give it all you've got to clear it . It's also plentiful and it is very likely you will find it at some point.
I particularly enjoyed the way the terrain feeds into (or away from) the greens and really makes you think about your where you should best land your approach. Greens were in excellent shape, very fast and firm but not so firm that it doesn't hold your ball on attack.
Most courses I play have one or two memorable holes that I look forward to playing each time out but there are several on this course that I would love to play again and again: #5,#7, #11,#12, and especially #18 are in my opinion what most golfers look forward to in terms of aesthetics and overall challenge.
The only issue with the physical course I had during this round was with the bumpiness of the cart path which can be repaired. The other issue had nothing to do with the course itself but with a threesome hitting into my threesome even though we were 18 minutes ahead of pace even keeping up well with a twosome ahead of us. I mean come on guys, here we were teeing up at hole #9 at the 1hr:30min mark and you're going to hit into us?! We happily let them through at the turn only to find these guys weren't raking the bunkers, fixing their ball marks or filling their divots. This sort of rude and careless play is unfortunate for course staff and other golfers alike and should not be tolerated. I should have spoken up but instead shook it off to enjoy the day hoping that I never encounter them again. Even taking 20 minutes at the turn, we still finished our round at 3'54" well ahead of their requested pace of 4:15 .
I am very much looking forward to returning to play Prairie Landing again.
Absolute Must Play
Prairie Landing is not close to my house, it is almost an hour drive, but anytime I have a chance to play here the drive is worth it. Course is links, there are a couple holes with trees in play, but fairways are very generous. Bent grass tees, greens, fairways, that are impeccably maintained. The bunkers were redone in 2015 to ease up the difficulty of the course, and they did a fantastic job. Perfect sand, no rocks, bravo. Gps on carts is getting outdated, but it is still great for what you need. Range is very good, and there are two practice holes before you even tee off. If only other courses could take this cue. The entire staff are very friendly and welcoming, and makes this a great experience. Course is extremely tough on a windy day. Also, if it is a weekend, and the weather is excellent, prepare to wait for a cart, they get so much play that running out of carts is an issue. Overall, one of the best public courses in the Chicago area.
Thank you for your nice review. We are thrilled to have you feel it is worth it to commute to our course! Hope to see you back soon!
Sunday golf not good
5 hr round ruins a beautiful day on a good course. Range ball machine w/credit card caused issues.A senior discount would be good also. Rangers were good people & personable as was guy cleaning clubs at end of round.
bull4pc Thank you for taking the time to review our course on Golf Advisor. We're sorry to hear that your round took a little bit longer than usual and also that our range ball machine wasn't functioning properly for you. Hopefully next time you make it out you'll experience the same great service our staff strives to provide, but a little quicker pace of play. Please come back and visit us anytime!
One of Chicagoland's best
Prairie Landing is one of the 2-3 best courses I play in Chicagoland. Great value. Great layout. I love the change from links layout to woodlands for a few holes on the back nine. It's a great mix.
18 is truly one of the best holes I've ever played. You can get to the green in two on this par 5, but it takes a great drive and a hold your breath second. Or, you can take the longer road and still par it. Lots of good holes like this.
Staff is great. Food is good. Practice holes and driving range are really the icing on the cake. Great spot.
We are so happy to hear that you have had an overall great experience with Prairie Landing. Thank you for your feedback and we hope to see you again soon!
Nice Course would highly recommend
Don't remember what I paid, but think less than $30 so fantastic price for very nice well conditioned, basically private course. It was a COLD day and windy, but very enjoyable round. I got paired with a member who was very nice, and steered me around .
Would definitely like to play again, especially at the price I paid. Very few people on the course, mainly due to weather.
Great great great
For November, course was in amazing shape. Bunkers are immaculate. Staff is great, a pleasure to deal with. Had a fantastic time. Greens are still recovering from being aerated, but were rolling good.
Seahawks375,
Thank you for the outstanding review! We take pride on customer service and keeping our course in great shape. Thank you for noticing. Come back soon!
Great course!
Was my second time playing here. It's a wonderful course and is still in very nice shape. I will be checking out the practice facilities in the spring.
We will be open until conditions aren't playable but we are glad that you are planning to come back! If you are looking for instruction we have some great teachers!
Beautifully Difficult
Tough course but immaculate! I was not prepared to face the challenge Prairie Lnding had up its sleeve. :-)
Bartman771313,
Thank you for the great review! Come back and play us again and hopefully you'll be ready this time!
Great course, challenging greens
This is the second time I have played this course and it was in great condition both times. It is a difficult course - undulating greens, many bunkers and some water in play, and open to the wind so that adds to the challenge. With that said, I really enjoy the course. It is extremely well maintained at a country club level, and it rewards good shots. I highly recommend it but bring your A game.
mgobluewally,
Thank you for the great review! We would love to have you back for a third time, maybe a fourth and more too? What do you think? See you soon!
Superb
Great course. Love the design. Fast running links style fairways. Challenging greens, I had several very long putts.
Thank you for the great review! I hop you made some of those long putts! Come back soon!
Speedy little suckers
If you enjoy greens that roll extremely true and on the quick side, this course is just about perfect.. Friendly landing areas and reasonable approach shots.. But here it's all about how well you can manage your putting stroke.. Love the place love the speed and trueness of the greens.. You'll enjoy this place tremendously..!
Thank you for the glowing review! We take pride in our greens and we hope that our cups were favorable towards you!
Have you ever aerified greens?
This generally is a great facility but the greens were horrible. I have been playing golf for 40 years , play all over the country and play year round. They did an awful job of aerifying greens. The main issue I have is they should tell you they aerified the greens when you book.
Sam,
We are sorry that you did not enjoy your round. Our aerifcation special rates included notifications that were in your tee time confirmation. We hope that you come back and play again soon because our greens have healed very nicely.
Great conditions
Is amazing!! Grass is beautiful, all the sorrounding are also just perfect. The sand traps are great.
Over all great challenge.
Thank you for such a kind review! We hope to see you back out here soon! Hopefully not finding too many of our sand traps!
PACE OF PLAY SLOWWWWW
Greens were aerated. This coarse uses deep punches on their greens, so it may take a few weeks until greens recover but by then, the season will be close to over. Rest of the coarse was in great shape. Now pace of play here usually is never really good but today was horrible. Waited on every shot and on quite a few holes there were more than one group waiting on the tee box. Rangers here do nonthing and they do not even try to rectify the problem. They just don't care. Having pace of play problems on a weekday during the middle of October is really unbelievable.
Agstacker,
We apologize on the pace of your round. It was unbelievable to us as well as we had more players than expected taking advantage of the aerification special that we were running. We hope to see back out here soon though.
slow going
Although the greens had been recently aerated the course was in very good condition. The problem was with the pace of play. I think a five hour round ( from 10am to 3pm) in the middle of the week is pretty ridiculous. We waited at every tee box. Two members of our foursome had to leave at the fourtenth hole to pick up their kids from school because we were so far behind time. We waited so long to get on the tee boxes that we all had problems with stiffening up. I have never had such a bad time on such a beautiful course. This is a great course and I hope management realizes the importance of keeping things moving. It's not fair that people waste their money by leaving before they finish because of slow play.
We apologize for you and your groups slow round. However, we had more golfers than expected taking advantage of our aerification special. Thank you for the kind words about our course though. We hope to see you back out here soon!
Prairie Landing October 2015
I really like this course and played it three times this year. i am not a good golfer and i struggle on some holes but the course is not tricked up, to be clever, it is just challenging.
The rough is thick and its easy to lose balls and lots of sand and water and hitting over marsh.
I know i am going to get a high score, i know i am going to lose some balls, and if you are ok with that you can enjoy the course.
if you are an average golfer and you get frustrated by water balls and lost balls, play somewhere else.
It was 60 degrees and sunny in October and the course was crowded but we still finished in a little over four hours. Staff was friendly.
the greens had been aireated and were a bit bumpy, i was ok with that, its fall.
I would go back today if i had the time.
Thank you for all the kind words! We hope to see you soon and that our water hazards are a little more forgiving next time.
Great layout , aerated greens not so much
Course layout great, windy day but warm. Greens were rough due to aeration, but played well, even birdied the 18th hole. Challenging pace of play however as we were getting close to dark toward the end of the day. The group directly in front of us was really slow and when we asked the ranger to get them moving, it didn't appear that anything was addressed, but luckily we finished in time. Price was greatly reduced due to green conditions, I would like to play it again but the price is less like it was yesterday, probably won't happen as its too expensive.
Dino,

Excellent
A phenomenal links style course. Plenty of bunkers and water. Big play on shot making and target golf. Greens excellent. Nothing bad about the course. Worth the trip and dollars to play this course.
Thank you for the great review! We hope to see you back out here soon!
Fall weather at Prairie Landing
Hi there, I was in town visiting family and had time for a round of golf. It has been about 6 years since I last played at Prairie Landing and I thought I'd give it a try. I'm glad I did. The course was in outstanding condition. Greens were very true and a good pace. The whole place is well maintained. I was a single and the Pro Shop took the time to get me paired up with a threesome of great guys. We had a wonderful day. We played the Gold tees and found them plenty challenging. The elevation changes are subtle at times but the contours of the fairways are such that you will have many shots from various degrees of side hill or uphill lies, so take a few minutes during your warmup to hit those types of shots at the range. Your buddies may laugh but I assure you that will help on the course. All in all this is a fantastic course and facility. And...keep an eye out on GolfNow or Teeoff for special deals that make it a must play.
We hope it's not another 6 years until we see you again! Come back and play soon!
Prairie Landing
Really a nice layout. Robert Trent Jones course. If this course was out in the middle of a forest, it would be top five in the state.. Putting next to the airport brings it down a notch. But , actually enjoyed watching the private jets fly overhead between shots. Some of the par 4's are a little short. Playing from the back tees, the Heather/ Prairie grass was strategically put where my errant drives landed. Some of my good drives ended up in some fairway sand traps. My risks weren't rewarded. Good greens, some bigger breaks than expected. Stay below the hole if can. Pleasantly surprised by this course. Just needed to play better.
Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience with us. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the course and we hope to see you again soon!
Thank you Eric6207790 for your time and consideration in writing this review. We are so glad that you had a good experience and look forward to having you back.
