Prairie Landing
About
Prairie Landing Golf Club has received acclaim ever since first opening in 1995, including a four-and-a-half-star rating from Golf Digest. This West Chicago course will make you feel as though you've been transported to a seaside links course in Ireland. The prairie-style layout closely follows the tradition of classic links golf courses. Robert Trent Jones II designed the course, fully utilizing the rolling terrain. He incorporated large, undulating greens and rolling bent grass fairways. Vast swaths of native grasses stretch along the fairways and strategically placed bunkers frame the greens. There is also contoured mounding to contend with. The golf course finishes with a memorable par 5 that features fairway bunkers on the left followed by a carry over a lake to a well protected, high bowled green. Prairie Landing also boasts a practice facility that includes a driving range with target greens, four practice holes, and a nine-hole chipping and short-game area.

Wonderful Staff and Top Course
Mistakenly booked a round online for the wrong day. Was visiting from out of town but the man in the pro shop was very understanding and charged me a discounted rate that was fairly close to my original price. He didn't have to do that but it was much appreciated. The course was in great shape despite the rain and i had a wonderful time. I will be back.
A Gem in West Chicago
This is a very nice Links style course right in the middle of nowhere in West Chicago. I will put this in same category of Cantigny and Cog Hill. Beautiful.
It is very clean and well maintained with mostly wide fairways. It has a lot of picturesque rolling hills that require shot making abilities.
The staff are very courteous, helpful and polite. They really make your experience as a VIP.
I would play here again if I see another on "hot deals".
First Time playing after the renovation
Sunday was the first time, I've played PL after the course renovation, last year. I hear some positive things about it but wanted to experience the track again after a few years.
Overall I felt the course was much as I remembered. A pretty good test of golf, but disappointed in the revisions. As I long hitter, I still find Holes 1, 2, and 8, short, tight, and boring. You can really see the lack of routing and spacing considering all of the land they have from the Dupage Airport.
I find the 9th Tee shot, as maybe the worst tee shot in all of Dupage and Cook County. To spend the money they did on the renovation, and to not:
1) cut the trees
2) Place an aiming stick to the center of the fairway
3) at least place a yardage marker indicating the end of fairway/water hazard
Unless you play that course with regularity, you have no idea where to aim. It might be better to play down 18, and then shot over the water.
And yes I crushed a drive, which was downwind and must have ended up in the water.
Also, a 5 hour round on a Sunday morning is inexcusable.
Those two reasons, is why PL won't get my money or time again for some time. Unfortunate, as it could be one of the better tracks around.
Excellent Course for all skill levels
Wide fairways and large greens. Well maintained. Loved the GPSj. Staff is also outstanding!
Excellent track
I was a single and was 2nd out (following another single). Pace of play was outstanding. The course was in fabulous shape. While I hit the ball fairly straight, expect to lose a few balls (I did). I find the track very challenging and enjoyable to play. There are some great holes to challenge your demons! Unfortunately I waited on each hole due to grass cutting, but it was a miner distraction.....I still flew. Play it....you won't be sorry.
Slowwwwwwww
Five hours and forty minutes with ZERO effort by staff to do anything about it. Unacceptable.
Prairie Landing Golf Club
The Good: Beautifully maintained course within a 5-iron of the DuPage Regional Airport in West Chicago. RTJ Jr. design is primarily treeless, but flooded with sand traps and undulating greens. Front nine is fairly benign and several gorgeous, interesting wooded holes on the closing nine. Very nice clubhouse with nice banquet hall. Fabulous practice facility includes great driving range, two putting greens, and three practice holes. Good on-course amenities with multiple restroom centers and GPS. Good twilight and senior rates.
The Bad: The buzzing of overhead airplanes is a significant issue. $100 price tag is hefty for a public facility, especially with several unmemorable golf holes. Some of the cart paths can be very confusing. Can be unbearably challenging in the wind. Nice staff but only adequate service for upscale facility.
The Verdict: Prairie Landing is one of the premier, yet unsung courses in the Chicago suburbs. One of the best manicured courses in the Metro area and arguably one of the most complete complexes in the state. Another RTJ Jr. gem.
Best Hole: The "amen corner" of holes 11-13 are superb, especially the long Par 5 13th. Risk-reward with approach that must carry a ravine to one of the smallest greens on the course.
nice people
staff very nice course is very challenging and in very good shape. My one criticism is there is way too much sand in the bunkers especially the fair way bunkers I sunk so deep in the sand I almost lost my shoes.
You'll want this course in your rotation.
We played twilight on this visit. I typically play this course 2 or 3 times a year. It is always in great shape and has a very nice lay-out. Well bunkered, great conditions, some water and undulating greens. Currently there is a disease on the greens leaving pock marks in some sections. The pin placements are set to minimize any interference with putting but I've never seen something like this at this course. It's not enough of an issue to stay away from the course but you may be upset if you are paying full price for the round. That being said, love the course overall and would still play again this year. Pay attention to the hole lay-outs in the cart to navigate distance and avoid hazards.
Thanks for the positive review! We're very glad that you continue to come back to the course but we would love to see you more often!
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Prairie Landing is a nice linksy course that is starting to show it's age even with their recent renovations. Sand traps were well maintained and overall course conditions were above average. This track is way overpriced usually $60/$70 or more and it's worth about $40 at most...I only play this on a hot deal once a year and in general I've found the clientele of this course to have an over privileged somewhat snooty attitude with majority of the cars in the lot exceeding 60K in value....so they can afford those very high greens fees...but still don't fix their ball marks or repair divots very well. Avoid when the wind is up over 15mph...you just won't have fun as most of the course especially is wide open to the elements with little shade. Another observation - severe railroad noise and fairly loud traffic noise from Roosevelt....and since the course is located on the DuPage Airport grounds you have planes (some jets) constantly taking off throughout your round. You are bombarded with noise which is far from relaxing.....you might as well be in the city....heck White Pines is quieter!!!
What they didn't renovate were the cart paths.....extremely bumpy with cracks/bumps which irritates and so if you have any back pains at all.....good luck! Long walks to some green sites which slows play as well and course should consider signing the course better so folks know where to park/leave their carts at greens to speed play. I'll still give 4 stars because of the quality of course and it's huge greensites but feel that might be a tad generous given the circus of noise, bad cart paths and in general cost to play it regularly.
Though you had some great things to say about our course, we are a bit taken aback by the comment about our clientele. We pride ourselves on being one of the top courses in our market and your comments about our conditions reflect that. As you are a top 10 contributor we know that you play a lot. Thus we are urging you to come back and play our course. We believe that you will also find some great rates on our website's booking engine, as it is the place where you will find our best rates!
Great day- fun course
Challenging and fair. Course layout is a lot of fun. We played blue/gold hybrid tees and worked out well. Greens roll true and fast. Loved them. You will enjoy!
We're glad you had fun at our course! We hope to see you back soon!
Solid links style course
If you are a fan of links style golf courses, I think you will not be disappointed. It's fairly forgiving off of most tee boxes, strategically placed bunkers in middle of fairways make you place your shots. There are elevation changes and it makes you work on hitting balls above and below your feet. Most greens are big and there are very few straight putts because most greens are rolling, in traditional links style. Not overly long in total yardage. Definitely rewarded for making good shots. Overall good value and I think somewhat of a hidden gem in the Chicagoland area. Only criticism is that the cart path could use some attention.
We're glad that you have found our hidden gem. Hope to see you back out here soon being rewarded for making those good shots!
links type layout
Tough layout next to dupage airport.Lots of plane noise.Funky opening hole .Great finishing hole.Large bunkers.Good greens.
New renovations
I wanted to play here after the renovations. I didn't notice any difference in the holes. The greens on the practice holes were very sandy. There was a little sand on the first three greens and they played a little slower than normal. The rest of the greens were the usual quick speed. We were a twosome behind a foursome but pace of play was good. We were alerted to a storm and advised to come in, on the cart display. We played one more hole and got in before the rain! We waited out about a 40 minute storm. We returned to the course and finished under 4 hours even with the delay. This course is fun and challenging. Keep it on the fairway and close to the hole for a good day.
Beautiful Course & overall atmosphere
Played 07/ 03/15 in the mid afternoon & it was exceptional in my opinion.
Staff was great - friendly - & on top of things.
Course in great shape. Extremely well manicured & lush on both fairways as well as greens & tee's.
Will definitely be back very soon. Course is a challenge to say the least if you're not careful.
Excellent public course
Great course and very challenging. Tough yet very fair
Excellent Twilight Deal
Got to play a great course on a beautiful day for $30 with cart. Great deal.
Expected a little more
Played with my brother. We were both excited for this course. Upon pulling in, I saw that the course was surrounded by an airport and train tracks which I did not like. It did not affect my round at all, I just did not like it. I don't really have to much to say about the course as it was not terrible, just not for me. One thing about the 19th hole, the food looked amazing. I would play it again, but I would have to get a good hot deal on golfnow.com to play it again.
Slow Play and Average Conditions
The pace of play was very slow at over five hours and twenty minutes.
The course was in average conditions. The greens weren't in the best shape and the fairways were filled with divots.
Having played this course in the past, the experience wasn't as previously experienced.
Next Year
I acknowledge that this course is under going major renovations which is good to see but I don't see this course being ready until next year. The greens are still recovering, tee boxes are okay, rough surrounding the green is loose, still being put in, sand traps are being re-done. All this combined with golf continuing throughout the summer leads me to believe this course won't be ready. Play it if you can get out there for a hot deal under $20....
We are glad to hear you enjoyed your round with us! We look forward to seeing you again on your next visit!
