Great day at the Golf Club of houston. Photo submitted by jmz320 on 08/25/2015
Houston Summer Golf
Most everyone knows that this course plays host to a PGA tournament and is highly regarded by the professionals. Playing this course at the end of July after a period of a good bit of rain the last several months has done a number on Houston area wide golf courses. Also our cold weather in February damaged a lot of greens to many Houston area golf courses. The greens at the time of my round had been aerated and sanded; mostly the Greens were in average shape having been treated in this manner. The fairways were in good condition and grass was cut close and tight. Sand bunkers are numerous and tough. Sand quality was fine. At a price rate of $75 on a Thursday which included a six dollar fee for range balls which were not readily available at the time prior to my round, this is frustrating. . Golf carts were also scarce at the time of my round. To the courses credit there was apparently a rather large tournament going on at the time. Of course this is a great golf layout and it is very challenging and unforgiving if you cannot hit Fairway Off the Teebox. The cart rules were 90° with several holes being cartpath only.
Friendly staff, awesome course!
Played there for the first time on 7/25. The gentleman at the checkout counter was friendly and made us feel welcome. Course was in great shape. Challenging without being too difficult. Look forward to playing again.
Slipping
The overall conditions appear to be slipping a bit. Also, with all the rain the course is still very wet which would appear that the course doesn’t drain well. I still believe the staff mows the Bermuda too tight in the fairways which makes the ball “sit” a bit too much for my preference.
The range markers had not been moved since the prior day so the hitting areas were ratty. Side note, the club should promote straight line divot patters vs the random divots you find at most muni ranges. That’s what it looked like yesterday.
I walked off after 12 holes because the group I got paired with was on track for a 5+ hr round and I didn’t have the time to stay out there. Six holes left and we had already been out there 3.5 hrs.
Some easy things need improvement.
The toughest part of running a golf course is keeping it in great shape. This course has done that. It’s a shame that the overall experience was lessened by simple things like obvious tee markers. There was no ryme or reason on why some holes has tee markers and some didn’t. And the ones that did are so small and close in color, you had to get out of the cart only to find that you were at the wrong tee. Also, it was cart path only for no reason, the course was bone dry.
Other than that, great course layout, great shape, penalizing rough (so hit it straight) good value.
Dead Cart
Played as a single. Cart was not charged. I called at hole 11. No one came out. I limped back to the clubhouse. Wouldn’t refund my round. The management of this club is horrible. Too pricey for what you get and it’s way overrated.
Greatest course in Houston
The course was well kept even with the rain we’ve been getting. Course was challenging but fair. Greens were fast but most are big and playable from the fairway
Great Golf Experience
My son and I played on a weekday and had a wonderful experience. The course was in good shape. The greens were a little bumpy from being plugged about a week earlier but once they fill in they’ll be fantastic. Pace a play was relaxed with no groups behind or in front of us. The Pro Shop is top notch and the staff was very friendly. We’ll definitely be back to The Golf Club of Houston.
Love This Course!
I’ve wanted to play this course for years and couldn’t pass up this deal on GolfNow. I wasn’t disappointed. Staff was friendly. The course is beautiful and in great shape. Challenging but fair. Lush fairways. Greens rolled true, no bare spots that I can remember. I will definitely play again soon.
Aerated
I'm tired of courses not letting golfers know ahead of time that they aerated their greens or at least offer a discount and not charge full price. Very annoying that I have to basically call a course and ask about greens conditions before I book a tee time online.
Green are punched and sanded
Good luck on bounce
Fair also punched
Wondering why lower rate and more hot deal
Secret is out that’s how Golfnow does it
Never warns you
Always ask why so cheap?

Poor Conditions
From the looks online and reviews, I was looking forward to my round at Golf Club of Houston.
I arrived 45 minutes early and enjoyed my time on the range and putting green, it was a very nice set up and made me more excited for the course.
Hole 1 through hole 18.
No Tee Box had been cut in a few days.
The fairway grass was long and striped with dead grass lines and grass clippings
There was no second cut on the fairway.
I understand it had rained non stop the prior week, but it was well over a week from the last rain. Overall the Tee boxes and Fairways were in horrible shape.
The greens have been aerated and sanded, The sand was inconsistent on every green with large portions of sand where the sand ran off due to water
No beverage carts or snacks
No food at the turn, they ran out of all food other than candy bars and we had a 9:20 T-Time so it wasn’t late in the day.
Member course at Golf Club of Houston
Fair layout with a few simple holes and others much more difficult. Always in great shape.
Poor value
Paid over $110 four days in advance only to find course had been aerated 4 days earlier- no info to that effect from GolfNow. Played behind 4-some who had 2 open holes ahead of them - multiple opportunities to let us play through, beginning with Par 3 on 7th hole - no ranger to move play along. Also no beverage cart in spite of 95+ degree heat. Miserable experience.
Just don’t expect any service in the afternoon
Played the tournament course, and it was in average shape. Greens had just been air fried (plugged and covered with sand). Fairways were trimmed but seemed pretty dried out. No cart person at all no one working the Tourn ( snack bar). Marshall’s were friendly.. I’m sure, given the setting, if the course was in top shape it would’ve been beautiful and a different experience. Since I’m reviewing my experience, though, it only gets 3 stars
Hot and muggy day
The greens had been aerated and there was more sand than in Galveston. The fairways seem to have been stripped of thatch and so were very sparse. I think the greens would rate a 6 on a stimpmeter, you needed a full shoulder turn to get a putt to go 20 feet. The sand traps had no sand and were like bricks. Hope to play again when in better condition.
