Winchester Country Club
About
Winchester Golf Club boasts a championship course that was a collaboration between Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Jr. The foothills of the Sierra Mountains serve as the backdrop to the course, which sits at a convenient elevation of 1,800 feet that puts it right above the fog but below the winter snows. The golf course also enjoys panoramic views of the Sacramento Valley. Massive rock outcroppings border the fairways, calling for some creative shot making. Accuracy is also a necessity with meandering creeks and bunkers coming into play on most holes. The layout is challenging but five sets of tees make the golf course approachable for a variety of skill levels. Winchester G.C. is not only well known throughout northern California, it has also been ranked as one of the 15 best in the state.

Best course within an hours drive from Sacramento
The course was in great shape for early March. Very scenic with
views of the Sacramento Valley including downtown Sacramento.
Each hole is unique and nestled in hillside settings with sloped greens that are challenging. We really appreciated the service at the 19th hole. We got in late, but they were willing to stay open and the attendant was very hospitable. Drinking a beverage and looking out over the valley at sunset was very nice. No other course in the area has what this course offers.
What a Sierra Foothill Gem!
This is hands down the best course available to the public in the Sacramento area, no contest no way. If you can get a hot deal for under $80 you will not be disappointed. The fairways are in excellent shape with many open to use of the driver if you have good accuracy with it. The greens were challenging but large. Overall, the course was maintained excellently with views of Mt. Diablo from the clubhouse. The best part about this course is that no one is out there playing! We had a tee time at 11:20 and got through the round at a leisurely pace by 3:30pm plenty of time to take advantage of the beautiful clubhouse bar.
Large undulating greens are a challange to putt.
We had a nice day at Winchester. Be aware however, the brakes on the golf carts are iffy and there are a number of steep downgrades between holes. We had one minor rear ender when the cart would not stop on the cart path down to #10 tee.
NICE COURSE, PRIVATE FEES TOO MUCH. SHOULD BE 50 OR LESS.
INTERESTING 70%OF HOLES, REMAINDER SEEMED TOO EASY FOR A 12 HCDP.. ALL IN ALL FUN AND THE YOUNG MAN AND HIS SON WERE A PLEASURE. ALSO MARSHALL HELPED UP PLAY THROUGH A FOURSOME THAT WOULD ULTIMATELY SHOOT A 6 HR ROUND, APPARENTLY GETTING THEIR MONEY'S WORTH.
Beautiful course, the views from the clubhouse are worth the drive.
This is a great golf course. I like that the course plays in front of you. There is very little circus golf here. With the exception of 10, every hole is a fair test. I would have easily given this course 5 stars, but no course should play 5 hours on a Monday afternoon.
challenging course & greens
great course but slow play ahead of us
no marshal on this day
This is an incredible course, the views speak for themselves.
Very beautiful, very challenging, incredibly well taken care of, what a course.
A true beauty.
Played this course for the first time as a single. It was everything I'd hoped it would be. Laid out within the natural terrain/settings. Very challenging from the tips, but very fair and not gimmicky. The course was in pristine condition. It had rained the previous 2 days and night before (late January), but the fairways were firm and the greens fast. Every hole is laid out beautifully and requires strategy. The 18th (and the view from the tee) was a perfect finish to a special round. The staff was friendly, helpful, and professional. It's a private club that presently allows public play on certain afternoons. I had a 12:30 t-time and they let me go off early as a single. A sub-4hr round on a course like this, taking the time to truly soak in its splendor, is very hard to beat. Would play it again in a heartbeat.
Great Course, but it will humble you.
Overall the course was in great shape. I did find the greens a little slow side BUT it had rained the night before and was cloudy so they never had a chance to dry out. I played as a single and was through in 3 hours.
This is a very well maintained and challenging course!
This course meanders through the hills providing plenty of nice views. It is well maintained and the staff are very courteous.
Quiet, well staffed, beautiful!
We really enjoyed ourselves. It helped that we played later in the day, and barely saw anybody all day long. The staff were helpful, put water in our cooler for us, and made sure we had what we needed and where to go. The driving range was well-stocked.
Having public access to Winchester is terrific
Great course and location. Previously closed to public play they have made the business decision to allow limited access. Has a private club feel and conditons have been kept up well in the challenging economy. If I was to join another club this would be it. Never boring always a challenge.
Great layout, couldn't wait for next hole.
Layout is great, couldn't wait for the next hole. Greens were average.
great course
Great view, challenger course. I wish the fairway and the green would be a little bit softer. Overall, very good experience.
Fair test of golf in a beautiful setting
Brought some friends from the Bay Area up to Winchester. They were very impressed. You cannot play anywhere in the Bay Area like this for the money.
Resort worthy golf experience
Beautiful mountain course only 1hr20mins from Lodi. Spectacular views and pristine conditions!
Unmatched aesthetic beauty designed by RTJ and RTJ jr two of the best
The pace of play could be any time you want it to be. We could have played in under 4 but my ideal is slower because I like to savor the course. The setting is as good as it gets. beautiful trees set in the gold country/foothills warm weather. The value is very good. When you come to Winchester you feel like it is your very own private course and that is very valuable to me so I can take my time. The walk is a killer ( a plus to me and may not apply to many others it is very demanding) Watch out for 15 virtually an island green and 223 from the tips
Great Shape and Wonderful Views
Winchester is a semi-private course with lots of interesting hole layouts and rolling fairways. A Robert Trent Jones Jr. course it is in my opinion somewhat more playable than another RTJ course in Auburn, The Ridge. Great staff, wonderful driving range and putting green, although fairly pricy.
Beautiful course, very good condition.
This course is challenging from the tips. Long par 3's. All the holes are great minus just a couple. Very nice practice areas, and greens. I think it's a little pricey. I think the golf now prices are about what this course is worth. I wouldn't pay regular rates for this place. It's nice, but not that nice.
You believe that 30% of the holes were too easy? This course is one of the toughest in the area. Maybe you were playing the front tees. Also, I don't know how you can expect the fees to be $50 or less- Average courses cost $50. Winchester is a beauty, one of the nicest in the Sacramento region, and they pamper you as well. It's pricey but they always offer deals online for around $75, which is a fantastic price for this course.
