8/18/2020 Round at Royce Brook
I played Royce Brook last season and the course was in immaculate shape. I played this morning and the course was in terrible shape. The tee boxes were a mess, there were horrible areas in the fairway, the entire course was soaked, the rough is too high and thick and the Greens had ball marks all over them!!! I payed $69.00 through GolfNow and the 3 some I played with told me I got robbed, because I paid that kind of money to play a Course in horrible shape!!!
Overpriced
I have been playing this course for years.
Went there for the first time this year and course condition is absolutley horrible. For $100 tee fees is insane. Course in current condition should be $40-$50.
What happened there? There are plenty of courses in the area in much better shape for half the $$$.
They let this course go..
The tee boxes are in terrible condition, hardly any grass. Fairways are in ok condition. Needs TLC, then it will be a great course again.
Dogtrack
Half the tee boxes are bare brown and the other half are growing bushes. Fairways and greens are about the same. The staff and clubhouse are top notch, but after playing Royce Brook multiple times every season this is by far the worst shape I've ever seen it in.
East course needs some love
Greens are full of ball marks with inconsistent speeds. Traps need to be freshened up with sand -- not fun hitting out of racked dirt. Fairways and tee areas have bald spots -- lost the turf....weeds are starting to grow in.
Disappointing decline in quality
I played here as the finale to a 3-day Golf weekend and was embarrassed that I lined up this course for my group. The tee boxes we burnt out and full of weeds. Fairways were the same. Greens were covered with divots. Sand traps were hard as clay and some of them had a foot of standing water in them.
When I played a here a few years ago the course was beautiful and had great amenities like GPS on carts. All of that seems gone now and this has become a below average course. At $100 per round I expected so much more.
The layout has potential but the course, as it was when I played, was not one I would recommend.
Used to be a nice course
Course was in a rough shape. Tee boxes were Not maintained and full of weed. Lack of rangers contributed slow pace of play. This was a great public course 2-3 years ago. Now it’s worse than any municipal course in Somerset County. I hope the management could turn this place around.
Declining course
I have played RoyceBrookGC over the past 10 years and this year has been the most disappointing for many reasons
- it was one of the premier golf locations in NJ - golf carts had GPS ; course had a starter ; fairways were pristine; bunkers had good sand in ; tee boxes were always in good shape ; was not that expensive; practice facilities were included in the round - no extra charge for range balls
- FF to today - reserving a round is easy - making changes is a bit of arun around now that they have golf now involved
- round is a$100
- they charge u for an individual cart now - carts don’t have gps for the past -3/4 years
- greens are average at best - lots of divots
- staff continues to be friendly - thank god for that
Not a pleasure to play as it used to be
Poor conditions
Course was in terrible shape. Yes its August and it's hot but $100 for these conditions , definitely not worth it.
Playedd here many times and was always in good shape, not sure what's happening.
Well Designed, Poor Upkeep
The course is well designed, and scenic with the woodlands of NJ. However, the course suffers from poor upkeep - the bunkers were hard clay, not maintained; the tee boxes were eroded, with significant areas of missing grass or no grass at all; and the greens were 'burn out' in places. The staff was friendly, the location is scenic, but I was disappointed in the course conditions. Really bad.
Enjoyable round
Place was packed and was a 5 hour round peak of day. Recommend they add sand in the bunkers. They were in Very poor shape and playing this course, hard to stay out of them. Nice open layout though and for us 20 handicappers,, challenging and fun. Staff was very nice and the 19th Hole was excellent. Best burgers around!
Warning! Read the Bad Reviews Before Playing!
I don't normally write reviews, but feel like I had to. Went with a buddy who had played the course a few years ago and raved about it. Unfortunately, someone has decided to squeeze as much money out of this course without maintaining it whatsoever. The course: tee boxes in horrendous shape with dead grass and dirt, never seen so many unrepaired ball marks on greens, they arn't even trying to maintain the traps (and there are alot of them), fairways are patchy at best. Our cart had garbage in the cooler and no sand/seed to fix divots. Playing: The round took over 5.5 hours, we had a group of EIGHT people in front of us, only four playing... but come on, on two par threes we were so backed up that there were 2/3 groups waiting on the tee box. "Rangers" who were kids had no idea how to move along play. Players: It's not just the course's fault, the players here did not respect the game or the course with speakers blasting music and general disregard for any etiquette, its almost as if everyone involved has decided to accept this course for what it is, a used and abused piece of garbage. So many better options in NJ - Will never play here again
Lots of neglect
Course sold to builders, like we need more homes built in Jersey. Tee boxes awful, fairway half dead, greens with many unrepaired divots (worst I have ever seen). Fine, I understand, but $99 a player, same rate before the sale when the place was pristine. Should be half the price. You see the neglect in the landscaping even as you drive into the facility. Give the other 18 holes back to nature, yes I know, I'm dreaming.
Rough Shape
I have played this course a handful of times over the years and it's always been decent. The biggest issue was usually pace of play as a 5 hour round was pretty routine, even early in the morning on a weekend. Now in addition to the slow rounds and general lack of awareness by a number of golfers out there, the course is in putrid condition. I don't think I've seen anything that bad, especially not at a course that charges what they do. It is an absolute joke that they let the course go like that and continue to charge those green fees. I will not be going back
Oh how the mighty can fall....
I played both courses here (west course was once public as well) about 16 years ago and remember both courses being top notch. Oh what a decade and a half of neglect can do to a golf course. It is obvious the ownership couldn't care less about the course (tees burned out, fairways very shaggy, greens were fair for a public course but slow, and huge potholes in the cart paths). This facility has definitely seen it's best days long ago. I certainly hope they keep the private West course in better shape than the East. I know if I were a member and the course was like this course I would leave and never look back.
Have played course since year it opened
In worst shape ever
Greens decent though
