The National
Wonderful course, lovely layout, not too hilly for older players to walk, fairways well maintained even the soggier ones it is January after all, the greens looked immaculate but we played the winter greens which subtracted from the experience but not too much, a little disappointed that the 18th didn't have a grandstand finish in front of a gallery. But overall a very nice course and will almost definitely be a better experience in the warmer weather with the greens in play, would definitely recommend.
Great course and setting - slow play
Always enjoy playing the National. It’s a challenging course with some great holes. Most times the pace of play is good, unfortunately on this occasion we were behind a group of 32 and found ourselves waiting on every hole after no 4 and decided to walk off the course after 13 holes as the light was fading. A course Marshall warned us on hole 3 that play would be slow but it shouldn’t take 5 hours to do 18 holes which is the time we would have needed.
Hopefully things will be better next time.
Slow but enjoyable
My wife and myself are relative novices at golf, so we enjoyed the challenge of playing the National course at the Vale. Its a long course with plenty of hazards, like water and trees, so a low score wasn't likely to be on the cards. We enjoyed our round even though it was very slow. The four-ball of lads in front of us were having a torrid time off the tees so it made me feel better about my poor round. Its a challenging course with a lot of variety between the holes.
Excellent golf course
We played the national on a hot tee time and we’re so impressed with the value. The course was in excellent condition despite the recent hot weather and the greens were excellent. The starter did tell us that the pace of play would be very slow as there were lots of 4 balls out in front. It took 4.5 hours to get around as a 3 ball, which felt like a bit of a long slog.
However, we thoroughly enjoyed the round and would definitely return.
Great layout
Very enjoyable place to play, very challenging course depending on what tees you play . Wife rented clubs ,sim2 set, and we rented a cart otherwise the hills would have been quite a walk.would definitely recommend to play ,driving range was good and pro shop had everything you could ask for.lunch could have been a little better but we didn’t have time for a full meal
Beautiful course
Course is long from the whites 6950 yards but plays like 6500 a lot of roll in fairways and downhill shots ,nice layout ,would play again and again
Lovely course
Stunning course. Played on a boiling hot afternoon, had a buggy, potentially would’ve struggled walking due to the heat.
Fairway and rough conditions very good. Greens a bit slow but ran true. Enjoyable day and course for sure
Great course but…
The course and facilities were as great as always, the driving range balls need to be better though as not a fair representation of the resorts quality. It rained for 4 hours off our round but aside from the odd puddle the course stayed in brilliant shape.
The only downside was the speed of play, the round took just over 5 hours! Marshals should be out and on this during busy periods.
Serious golf course
Really impressed with the Wales National - great condition, interesting layout throughout, and a real test of your game. It’s very long and the large amount of doglegs mean if you don’t hit the right landing zones it plays even longer! The back 9 is the star with a cracking run of holes from 10-16. Although it does seem to have a drainage problem the overall condition of the course and greens were excellent.
In the current climate of green fees at ‘high quality’ courses I’d say anything around £25-50 depending on time/day is excellent value.
National course
Great day out and outstanding course, will definitely be back
Stunning course / poor greens
This is a really pretty golf course. Great length, rewarding big drives. It has an interesting layout, in well established parklands. with plenty of water to keep players on their toes. Sadly on the day of our visit, a Saturday in mid May, the greens were slow and bobbly. Not what I expected at all. If fact it looked they hadn't been mown for 48 hours - but I might be wrong. Glorious day for golf on an almost empty course - we tee'd off at 4pm. Would go back, but not worth the full fee.
Great Course
This is an extremely long course which we walked. Played in a 3 ball and each member pretty exhausted by the middle of the back nine, as it was a very hot day.
The condition of this course is up there with the best I've ever played. The greens were in perfect condition.
One thing to point out. There are no yardage markers anywhere and a number of the approach shots are blind which made it very difficult. Some kind of yardage book will be required for my next visit.
