Southern California has no shortage of scenic oceanfront golf courses, but the Crossings at Carlsbad still manages to stand out. With the Pacific Ocean to the west and the southern California Peninsular Mountain Ranges to the east, the course's scenery is truly stunning. The golf course will take you across rugged terrain, through canyons and wetlands accentuated with sagebrush and native flora. Water or sand comes into play on almost every hole but if you can manage to hit straight and keep it in the fairway, you'll be generously rewarded. The golf course finishes with one of its toughest holes. You begin with an intimidating tee shot into the coastal breeze with bunkers on the left and a canyon on the right, then you face an approach shot to a severely undulating green framed by trees and bunkers. In addition to the course, the Crossings at Carlsbad also has a lighted practice center.

Horrible conditions, Painfully slow play

I had forgotten why it had been 5 years since I last played this course... now I remember. And it will be MORE than 5 years until I play it again, if ever. At the top of the gripe list is the slow play. We teed off at 12:45 and only managed to get in 14 holes by the time the sun set. As we drove off the course, there were foursomes backed up, 2-3 groups PER HOLE, the rest of the way. Worst I have seen in San Diego in years. Then there was the mottled conditions of the greens... truly horrible. Pin placement did not help, but that's a greenskeeper madness, not the course's, per se. Lastly, because it's such a weirdly designed course, it's very difficult to get comfortable playing there. Yes, the miles and miles of overhead high tension lines are somewhat distracting (and I'm glad I'm done having kids), but it is not designed to enhance speed of play. Quite conversely, it is laid out in such a way as to create endless bottlenecks, which makes for a long and distasteful experience. I would NOT recommend this course to anyone when there are so many other more "pleasant" courses in the area...

Rude staff

Great course but very unfriendly staff who think they are gods gift to golf!! Felt rushed and rudely talk to by many staff members. Unless you are rich or a pro I would recommend any other course in the area. Not worth a 100.00

Fun course, a little weathered from recent heavy rain.

I enjoy bringing out-of-town guess to The Crossing, especially players who are not use to the elevation changes and sand traps.

Very hilly with a unique layout.

The greens needed a little work, there were a lot of ball mark imperfections. The course itself is very hilly but was very enjoyable with excellent views. I would definitely go back!

Hard but fair

For some unknown reason, I had held off playing The Crossings - it is one of the last area courses (the 44th. actually) I have played since coming to San Diego two years ago. It was worth the wait. Generous fairways mean that your driving can be a little off (but beware no 18!) and the short holes are not long, but very challenging. Some spectacular elevation changes make for great views and there is enough variety to keep you interested and intrigued. On the negative side, the greens were a little bumpy and the distances between greens and tees (10 to 11 particularly) were astounding - they must have more cart paths than almost any course in the USA.
Overall, it had elements of Maderas, Mount Woodson, Steel Canyon and Aviara for a price that seemed pretty reasonable. But bring your A game - it doesn't look difficult, but is deceptive.

Greens were in poor shape

The greens were in very poor shape - slow and quite bumpy. There were also spots where it was soggy due to overwatering. Pretty surroundings but not the best experience.

Course is challenging and scenic

Greens often had multiple levels for great variety and challenge when putting. Fairways had good mix of sand traps, contours, trees, valleys, water and hills. Some pin placements created significant difficulty, which was interesting.

Greens are quite a challenge, and you must be very accurate off the tee. We played in about a 30mph wind what a blast.

Our cart ran out at 16 and we had to push it, I called the pro shop, but they never sent anyone out. That was poor service because the last 4 holes play up out of a canyon and the drive is very steep.

Great layout, but SLOW play

I enjoyed the layout of the course with a friendly staff. Each hole is different and presents a different challenge. However, the round took us over 5.5 hours to complete. I expect slow play on weekends, but this was ridiculous. There was a hole and a half wide open in front of the group playing ahead of us. The marshall didn't say anything to them until we made them aware of it... it didn't help anyway.

Great layout around the canyons.

Beautiful views from the elevated tees. Some challenging holes that tempt you to go for it over canyons or, to cut some corners.
Unfortunately, the greens were soaked due to overwatering. They said that they were trying to compensate for some damage due to a hot spell. A couple of the greens were cut too short with a few mower stripes down to the dirt.
Overall, I really enjoyed it though.

Interesting layout, noisy air traffic, power lines, poor conditions

I came from out of town and played 4 courses in the Carlsbad area. This course was a mistake. People had told us it was a high end public course. It is not. They took a bad piece of land and spent a fortune building a course which has many interesting holes but the front nine is ruined by being located at the end of an airport runway and the presence of high tension wires.
That could have been overlooked but the course was in horrible condition. Greens were very bumpy and fairways along with green side areas had many bare spots. I mean big bare spots. Employees told us the conditions were due to extreme heat they had experienced but I'm not sure about that.
I will take a pass on this place in the future.

New course, old tradition and services

Friendly staff takes your bags in a cart to your destination (putting green, hole 1, driving range) while you walk through the majestic building (pay your green fees, get food etc.) and walk out onto an impressive starting area with putting green, chipping area and driving range. Outside refreshments available (great when you go from hole 9 to 10!; food is superb, drinks are well-chilled).
The 18 hole course is an adventure with many challenges. The distances between holes is sometimes long, very long, but well worth the ride. Walking is not advised! Beautiful panoramas, awesome "state of the art" gps technology in every cart, excellent maintained tees, driveways and greens. Once hooked, it's difficult to let go. We went again the next week!
And will go again and again.

Great course for great price

Upon arriving, the staff was extremely friendly and asked if we had a tee-time, after which they took our clubs and put them on the cart which they told us would be waiting for us near the starter after checking-in with the pro shop. Pro shop staff was friendly as well. After a quick walk down to our waiting cart, the starter was very quick to offer us some playing tips and warnings about the course. It was helpful to have this information seeing as it was our first time, doubtful that regulars get these course tips every time. We teed off right on time and the course was still packed seeing as it was a Sunday with a 3-day weekend. The course itself was in good shape. The tee-boxes had ample flat/green space to work with. The fairways were undulating but consistently green throughout (there may have been some burns throughout but the sun has been baking San Diego for months now). The rough had some thick areas to it but nothing that was impossible to get out of. There is lots of out of bounds and protected areas so watch for those when choosing your shot. I enjoyed the layout as it played similarly to Mt. Woodson and Salt Creek in San Diego County. The only "complaint" I might have had about the course were the greens. They were very inconsistent and no hole except 18 had a smooth green. Besides divots everywhere our foursome agreed they were exceedingly bumpy. Other than that, if you can find a reasonable rate to play here I would highly recommend it. Pace of play was right around 4.5 hours though after our group, groups were being allowed to play as twosomes and everyone was rushing to try and get all 18 in before sunset. Also, after 6:00pm, watch out for the haze and last few holes that play directly into the sun.
