A GOOD CHALLENGING COURSE, TO ME
I played the course 3 years ago when it's not open to public yet. I like the course but it's a little far away from downtown Los Angeles (where I'm living). And of course, it's not open to public.
It's open to public about half year ago (if I remember it right). I played once and it's disaster to me. I played badly so I came back to play it again.
The only complaint I have is the pace of play. It's rather slow.
The course is challenging. If you play the back tee, it's rather long. Many holes with around 400 yards (some par 3 holes around 200 yards). It's OK to play 400 yards hole on regular flat course. It's built in a hill and valley. There are a lot of elevation changes. The fairway is narrow and most of them are not on the even ground. You have to know the course to know where to put the ball and, of course, you have to put ball at those areas. Or, you score will be ugly. That was what my score card looks like last time, ugly!
The green is fast. I think the grass was taken a toll by recent California drought. The fairway grass is not green but it's OK.
On the whole I like the course. My score this time got improvement, too. If you are close by the course and like the challenging, come to play. Of course, you have to give yourself plenty of time as I mentioned the pace of play is slow. I hope the course can think of way to make change on that.
what a great view
Not easy to play but lot a fun with wind and
Elevation. Need good skilll iron shot and bunker shot. Chllenge course.
Good Value
Typical Norman design, a little tricked up buy playable. Course needs some TLC but for the GN rate it's an excellent deal. Would play again.
beautiful and challenging.
I really enjoyed my stay, the course is great and the staff is fantastic, the views all around the course are amazing, I will truly play there again.
Wow
Wonderful layout, service, pace fairways, greens, etc.
We played shortly after aeration which may have slowed the greens a bit but they were still a 10.
Tough course requiring some strong second shots, long carries on tee shots over trouble and the ability to play out of long, thick bermuda in the rough areas.
Having just been playing regularly again after years, this was at times beating me up. However, I did have a number of pars and even a birdie to go with an OB and two lost balls.
Requires every club in the bag and every shot in your repertoire.
Played on a Monday morning. One twosome at 6:30, ours at 7:00 am and one at 7:30 am. Played at our own pace (4 hours) and very pleasant.
YOU CANNOT WALK THIS COURSE. It's like mountain climbing in places. I think a couple of the cart paths had the steepest grades I have seen on any course in 40 years and I've played a lot of hilly courses.
Would absolutely return.
Course has really gone downhill
Course was not in very good shape. The fairways were brown and in some places looked like they were dead. We teed off on the back 9, which was fine but there was not a cart person. The had a comfort station on each 9 but there were no cups at the water station and the drinking fountain next to the water stations were not working. At the turn we tried to grab a snack and a drink and it took 30 minutes. I have played this course a number of times but I can honestly say, this was my last. Los Serranos, which is right down the street is in much better condition and half the price.
SLOW!!!!
Slow!!! 6 hour round of golf?? Great course that I will never play again. Come on get a marshall out there. 6 hrs?!
Nice course, bad condition. Have to play again
Nice golf course design however we went just after the punch of the greens and it wasn't the best way to play a course for the first time. I will go back soon and give it a better test but I would reccomend it from what I saw of it's potential.
This course has an excellent layout enjoyed it very much
This course was in good shape except for the greens were sanded it's very challenging for the average golfer
Take extra golf balls!
This is "Roller Coaster Ride" with every shot not for the "faint at heart.." Ball placement is a must...slanted fairways will call even your best shots into the OB areas or into deep unforgiving bunkers! Many blind shots and rapid undulating greens will challenge the low handicapper. On the plus side what fabulous food, customer service and magnificent views!
Have fun and get ready for a thrill!
Scenic
Nice course - super slow play. Not a very friendly player course for your average player- thus five plus hour round. Very scenic layout. Typical resort style course where the focus of design is more of a "look at me" then a "come and play". Always nice to dream while your looking at multiple million dollar McMansions, it made the slow play less painful.
Pace of play
We were stuck behind the seniors around their 50's, most inconsiderate players. Green was open in front of them and would not hit the ball, but just taking practice swings and holding up 4 groups behind. Told clubhouse nothing was done. Very disappointed that they would have people like play there.
6 Hour Round - No Sympathy from Mgmt
Don't be deceived by the beautiful pictures of this course on golfnow.com or the Vellano CC website. I'm sure the course was at one time a beautiful layout with green fairways and marshals to keep the players moving. No more. Took over three hours to play the first nine holes. 40 minutes to play the next two holes and that was all I could take. No marshals in sight to help with pace of play. When I mentioned it to the pro shop mgr, he asked his boss if they could do anything (like 50% off on then next round) and was told "no." This is the first and last time I'll play Vellano. There are plenty of other courses in Southern California who want and appreciate my business.
VERY SLOW PACE OF PLAY
We started our round at 1:10pm and barely finished 14 holes by 5:45pm (4.5 hours). We really couldn't see the ball at the 14th hole since the sun set around 5:30pm-ish, so it felt like we only finished playing 13 "Quality" holes. I emailed the Director of Operations, Keith Park, to let him know they over-booked the course with too many slow 5-somes but received no reply. If you decide to play at this course prepare to take 5.5 to 6 hours to finish your round (i.e. don't start any later than 11am (or at least 6 hours before sundown)...unless you don't care if you finish all 18 holes.
Rude staff! Trouble getting in the community even with a tee time of 1:00
Coarse is in terrible shape for it being a partial country club. grass is wrecked on ever hole. Staff is rude an out of it. None of the the employees can answer questions! To get in the community the lady advised me I didn't have a tee time even after I showed her my email from golf now that I had already booked. After she called the club house 3 times an no one is home.... She finally let me in after waiting 20 mins. I will not be going back to this coarse or recommending it to any friends or family.
Pace of play horrible.
This course was not managed very well. Course was in bad shape. There was nobody out in the course to manage pace of play.
Challenging, but fun!
Very challenging but fun course. Very narrow fairways and quite hilly. You need to be able to hit your target. The staff went out of their way to make you feel welcomed. We enjoyed our day and look forward to playing it again.
Hilly and pace of play.
Skills with cart are more important than skills in golf. Strong legs climbing hills when not in cart. Bring balls.
All alone first 4 took 25 minutes then caught a 4 some 4.5 hours last 14 holes.
Fun course but way to slow..
I understand that weekend golf sometimes takes more patients than skills. I usually golf during weekday so this is always the challenge. However when a round takes more than 5 hours I think it is course management's problem than golfers problem.
Course was fun plenty of challenging greens well kept condition made it even more fun. however wait was just too much.
If the good course like this is managed poorly like this I don't think I will go back to play again.
