Veteran day at vellano
Our teetime was at 1138 but we didn't get out until 1200. The course was crowded because of the holiday. If you like to play fast pace under 41/2 hours round then play on a regular day not holiday. Fairway is a little brown but playable. It's understandable cause of the drought they are limited to water the fairway. Green is smooth and fast. I will come back again but on a regular day
Disappointed
I was fortunate to play Vellano in its heyday when it was in immaculate condition. The only thing that remotely reminded me of the beauty of this course were the greens. Everything else was subpar!!! The worst of it all was the pace of play!!! Barely got 18 holes in because we jumped ahead and started on hole 10. Had we not done that we would have never finished.
Very nice & very challenging
Really nice course... very challenging. I wouldn't say it is extremely difficult... but you are definitely penalized for very bad shots. I'm a bogey golfer with 2-4 pars per round. I had 6 pars, but I scored about 8-9 shots above my average... because of a few (5 or 6) blowout holes. I didn't feel like the greens were that tough, although there are a few huge greens and I had a bunch of 3 putts which is unusual for me. I'm looking forward to my next round there to see if I can improve my score.
My one minor complaint... the 1st hole. Too early in the round for that hole. Maybe its a personal thing, but I want to open my round with a driver. The range was closed due to a wedding... so that's not the hole I want to play when not fully warmed up. My suggestion is to make 10 the first hole.
But overall I really enjoyed the course... very quiet, serene and with beautiful views.
A short drive to awesome golf!
Been waiting for the perfect opportunity to take advantage of a Hot Deal at Vellano. So happy I finally did. I had no idea this track was so nice, hard, and well conditioned. Second time around might be a bit easier as at least I'll know where "not" to hit it, but I'll still have to execute. Played from the GOLD tees (tips) and the forced carries into narrow landing areas were awesome, scenic, and provided a great deal of satisfaction when executed. One singular complaint was that there was no one there to monitor pace of play. Called pro-shop to complain about slow group, they addressed it, but group completely ignored it and again delayed completion of round by another 30 minutes. GET WORKING MARSHALLS!
Vellano on a week day
Played this course several times. Fun and a challenge. Various type lies. Holes you can bomb others require tact. Slow on weekends but weekdays pace is good. Geens coming along nicely after recently being pinched.
nice course to practice ups and downs
Very nice course with good surrounding, hilly course to practice up and down hills. Can't go wrong with under $20 green fee. I had a great time.
This course is wonderful and very quite
Excellent I like this course very much the pro shop are very friendly cart condition is ok green r good sands condition is very good maybe need put gps on the cart because it is very hard to measure the distance
Hello Greg Norman
Some people don't like the elevation changes I suppose, but this course is LEGIT. I'm sad this Greg Norman design isn't on The Golf Club for Xbox ONE so I could play this course every day. Got a crazy hot deal with aerated greens for $16 Oct 15 and it was my best day of golf in a long time. It's supposed to be an Italian community, but I felt like I was in Ireland..Maybe it was the cloudy skies, either way the course is gorgeous. There's a few tricks on the par 5's that I know now for next time I play which will be very soon. Love love this course, thank you GolfNow!
Velano
Very difficult course but overall great experience. Rose the cart girl was awesome. The greens were being fixed so they moved fast.
Eight Holes in 2:45
I love 'different' golf courses. Having read about Vellano I knew I wanted to try it just once. Greg Norman's comparison of the site to Tuscan Countryside was a little over the top, but what the heck. I found the course very playable even with the elevation changes. And I enjoyed the 'target' golf aspects of of the holes I played.
But the pace of play was atrocious. On the ninth tee I bid good-bye to my playing partners after having been on the course for 2 hours forty-five minutes. Part of the responsibility for good course management is making sure people move along, and Vellano failed miserably. There was no course marshal. But that is not surprising---they have cut back to the extent that the roving refreshment girl drives a cart with two blue ice chests in the back.
I would play the course again, just because I still want to see all of it. But I would only do it first thing in the morning when I can have some control over the pace. But it is not a place I would return to again and again.
Course has good views
Both the fairways and greens were in poor condition, not very green. staff not friendly or helpful. did meet a local and he helped with course insight. Have not and would not recommend as a golf destination, there are many more impressive courses in the inland empire to play.
worth the drive
Great deal. Greens were rolling smoothly, fairways had very few dry spots.
Wonder what Greg Norman thinks?
This is a Greg Norman designed course that was built about 10-12 years ago and was supposed to be an upscale members only club. Then the economy tanked and the bad weather severely damaged the course during final construction. They struggled to get the course opened, but eventually did. It was a members club for awhile, but eventually had to open it to the public to survive. Currently you have this very upscale, gated neighborhood, called the Beverly Hills of San Bernardino county, and one of the finest clubhouses in California. And next to it, you have a course that is really rough around the edges and conditions wise, is more like your average municipal course in Pacomia or Oxnard. Granted, the drought doesn't help, but you can pull and trim weeds, take a little better care of the greens and tee boxes (were a little beat up) put in the steps you were supposed to on elevated slopes or fix the water fountains (bring water, there is none on the front 9), clean up the driving range, or otherwise tidy up. This is not the upscale course Greg Norman and the developers envisioned, although the green fees might say otherwise. If you can score a hot deal, is a fair deal and worth a play. Otherwise, there are better deals around to be had.
Great value
Great pace of play and great conditions
Very challenging course with plenty of scenic views
Course amenities disappointing
I have played Vellano 7 or 8 times since it opened in 2007 - it is a somewhat challenging course for an intermediate golfer (14.2) like myself, but it forces me to manage my game better. Our foursome played on Labor Day and the course was the busiest I had ever seen it. Two players in our foursome (low intermediate players) were newbies to Vellano and struggled a little. Evidently, this upset a couple of groups of snooty members playing behind us so the marshal very nicely asked us to pick up the pace. We did, even letting one group play through. On the back nine, the marshal apologetically told us that the group now behind us was complaining about our slow play, even though they were at least a hole behind. When we saw the marshal a couple of holes later, we jokingly told him to tell the group behind us that they're a hole and a half behind, so pick it up! He thought that was pretty funny. Long story short, we finished in about 4-1/2 hours, which is not an unreasonable pace for this course. All this aside, the course was in great shape as usual with fairly quick greens. To say that Vellano is a classic "billy goat course" is an understatement - a lot of up-and-down hiking between the cart and the tee boxes and greens - a good workout to say the least.
The disappointments:
No ball washers on the carts or at the tee boxes.
No GPS on the carts or barber poles along the fairway edges, but the course has fairway plates (100, 150, 200) and yardages on most of the sprinkler heads. Because of Vellano's location, I couldn't get the GPS app on my phone to sync or function, so that option was useless. I believe the course has yardage books available if you ask.
When we started our round, the sand jars on our cart were empty and the ice chest had what must have been leftover water in it from the previous day. There were uncovered sand buckets at the par 3s, but the sand was wet, presumably from the sprinklers.
The ice and water machines at the 5th and 14th tees were not working; in the past we have filled our ice chests at those locations and grabbed some water. We only saw the cart girl once during our round, and her cart was not much more than a standard golf cart with an ice chest.
Will I play Vellano again? Yes, it is a challenging course with some great holes and great views. I just hope that management starts paying a little more attention to the details that would make the experience even better.
Greg Norman meets mini golf
Time to bulldoze this travesty. Plays more like miniature golf. I would rather spend my time wrestling a cactus.
One of my faborite!!!!
I played with Golfnow Hot deal which was $29 a person on Friday around 1:00pm. It took me less than 4 hours to finish 18 holes. Thank you for Greg to design this beautiful course. One thing I hoped to the management is to maintain original concept of course as a links course.
Needs a yardage guide
I don't know if they're available or not, but a yardage guide would be a big help. The first hole is a total layup hole so after you see your "perfect drive" fly into the hazard, you realize that you wish you had some local knowledge. The greens were very nice and extremely tricky to read.
At the first tee, the sign says, "pin position 2", but there was nothing in the cart or on the scorecard to tell you what position that is. Asked the cart attendant after the round and he had no idea what I was talking about.
We got stuck behind a very slow 5-some that would not let us play through so had to skip the 10th hole. Overall, a interesting golf course and would play again if it was another hot deal, now that I know what to expect.
Beautiful course but pace of play was horrendous
It was my first time playing here and I had a fun time! It was a beautiful course that had me in awe on some holes but the pace of play was horrible. It took us 5 1/2 hours to complete 17 holes. We didn't even finish cause we were waiting so long on every hole and every shot. This left a sour taste in my mouth, and don't know if I would recommend this course
Painful pace of play
Got to course to find out that a tournament had started an hour earlier, but was assured that to start the course it was now wide open. It took 3 hrs and 23 minutes to play the front nine. started at noon and finished at 6:13 pm. Pace of play was painfully slow. Waited on EVERY shot for at least 10 plus minutes. The course was somewhat challenging, more challenging for the groups in front of me apparently. Should have quit before I started when at the first tee box the twosome ahead of me proceeded to hit more than one ball, bad sign!
