Nice course but not challenging
This course looks very fine but not a place to return.
Just usual and not give us any further interests...
Best it's been in years
Kudos to the new owner and staff The course is better than it's been in years, even shows more pride in the course than when it was private.
They've switched the front and back nines since I played there last.
The weather was horribly hot, the pace was about 5-1/2 hours, but the course was in great condition, especially considering the drought conditions.
target golf
first time here.wind made this course even more difficult than it already is! if you don't hit most of your shots straight,it will be a long and frustrating day of golf.we got caught in the passing storm, and the marshall told us to clear the course.only finished 14 holes.also this place is hard to navigate, due to lack of signage going hole to hole.no ball washers anywhere.very hilly ,takes a toll on you, even with the cart.also,no gps on carts, doesn't work up here we were told.my gps watch was useless due to this.yardages were pretty much a guessing game.overall,i would try again just because it really was a challenge to play here.
Lots of elevation changes
This course is played on hilly area, lots of elevation changes and force carries.
Tight in some areas. Will be back to give it another try.
Over rated
For a country club, this course does not provide the essentials needed to facilitate players.
1) No ball washing stands.
2) No distance markers through out, range finder is a
must.
3) GPS tablet is just for show, can't even get a map of
the course. Golf logic GPS does not have the
correct course information.
4) No drinking water.
Plays tough but a lot of fun
We had a t time at 2pm Wednesday , there were not very many players at this time during the week. Play was pretty quick . This coarse is tough but well worth the time . It's a lot of fun to play , it's beautiful the green were very challenging . I will play it again
Very challenging - great for non beginners
Course has amazing views and a great clubhouse.
Very challenging so go with an extra set of balls as the course offers very little forgiveness!
Oh, don't forget about the surprise 20% service charge on anything ordered at the bar n grill. So with my usual 20% tip I realized I paid 40% for my breakfast.
- they don't tell you about the service charge so read the fine print on your receipt.
The Best
Vellano is the best deal for southern California through Golfnow. It has a little of everything and on a good day you are done under 4 hours. Greens are great.
Great use of rough land
A very challenging course, tight and requiring better than average accuracy. Only drawback was not enough yardage markers made it difficult to play. Pro shop said they gave them out for free, but I was not given one. I would still recommend this course to people looking for a challenge.
Challenging course but fun
A few good long drives are required to just get to the fairway with very large elevation changes. But the condition of the course is very good. Service was great. Nice place.
Windy and Challenging But worth the money!!
This course is nestled inside a premium neighborhood (surrounded by million dollar houses)in Chino hills. It used to be a member only facility but now is open to the public, Hint** means that its a pretty nice course.
Very unique layout, as I would describe, it's like Oak Quarry on steroids. Alot of elevation throughout downhill, up hill. One of the harder courses that I've played at. Very windy area, if you like some challenging golf I would recommend. Pace of play was moderate took a little over 4 hours to finish course. Started 2:10 ending at 6:30PM.
dont bring the pro v's
tough challenging course elevation changes fast greens, if you miss just s a little it can lead to trouble hit quite a few shots that i thought were pretty good but wrong part of fairway it would roll off and find a bunker or some hazard? great views every hole, play this course a few times and learn where to miss and it can be alot of fun to play. the constant 40 mph wind didn't help either
Windy Vellano
They really need to go back to basic setting up course people can play. Their GPS was down for the whole week and they don't seem to care about fixing it. The course like Vellano, it's not easy to play without GPS. They don't have 200, 150, or 100 sticks so you have no idea where you are and you have to make an intelligent guess. They need more signs to direct you to the next hole, but they have NONE. When you get to the hole, they don't have hole marker which shows how far the hole is etc.
If you don't like paying in a windy condition, DON'T go this course. It's windy just about every time and when you not hitting good (which most of the average players are), then you are in for rough time.
The people at the desk aren't all that pleasant either. The food is good and staff in restaurant is pleasant.
Overall, I give 2 stars and will probably NEVER go back.
Breath taking
VELLANO COUNTRY CLUB, CHINO HILLS
Played Vellano on 3/30. We played a twilight at 1530 and finished #18 as the sun was setting. The course was nearly empty. Personally i think the current reviews were a tad bit harsh. Disgruntled players who over estimate the level of their play. No question, the course is extremely difficult. Mulitiple tee boxes situated to where a well hit and placed drive will only reward you with a second shot from the fairway. The course layout is massive. Situated in an elite housing tract among mulit million dollar homes and varrying elevation changes give the player a beautiful panoramic view. Never a loss to stop and take a deep breath and enjoy your surroundings.
As with any course, the optimum shots come from the fairway. Keep it there and you give yourself chances. Not much rough to speak of but off the fairway the ground tends to become hard with very short turf for the ball to sit in. Divots in the area are no where to be found. I found the faiways to be generous and playable. Unlike most of the reviews I read saying they were narrow and brown. I had no problem striking the ball and getting good distance from my shots. For not knowing the course I felt I played better than my expectations.
The greens were not as maintained as well as what you would expect from a course of the level. I've played on better from lessor tracks. They were fast and hard with multiple breaks. Your ability to read a green will be tested.
The staff is minimal. Not any real complaints there. No marshal, no starter but the gals in the bar were helpful in icing down our cooler. Another oversight from the lack of of any staff.
In conclusion, I give the course a good to very good rating. Excellent is Oak Quarry and Tijeras Creek. This was a tad bit below their level. Will I play here again. Yes, more than likely. I had a good time. Leave the Pro Vs in the bag!!
Another I.E gem
Drove here from Irvine on a Friday afternoon and got home before I would have if played at any local public course that all play at about 5.25 hours on a friday. Tough challenging couse...had to carry a ball 265 yards uphill into the wind on one hole...just to reach the fairway, got a 6. Hit two balls right down the middle of fairways on two other holes that ended up o.b. somehow, and had a putt roll about 25 feet past the hole....first time I have ever seen the wind take a putt and almost blow it off the green. I usually shot in the low 80's, not today.
Another private course is ruined
Know a friend who knows the owner, from what he is saying that the course has been losing money for a while, I guess that is why they open to the public.
The course: it is very challenging, being a long hitter doesn't mean much here, there are narrow fairways or traps at around 250 yr usually, therefore if you hit beyond that you need to be careful. The fairway looks fine, but the condition is poor, as well as the green, I don't know how they make the green fast, but it seems in very bad shape. And it is not caused by ball markers, the green looks like to be over watered, and mud everywhere.
Pace of play is horrific, honestly it is due to the players, had a foursome in front me, they were like, joking on the tee for 10 mins, then tee off, ball went wile, looking for balls for 15 mins, then drop and hit second shot, and repeat. I passed through one foursome and went ahead, same situation with another foursome. Finally I decided to quit after skipping 3 holes on the front nine.
Great Course and Deal
Had a 8am tee time Monday morning. Pulled up to clubhouse and parking lot was empty. Paid my green fees and hit range for about 15 mins. Teed off at 7:45 and done by 10:30. Literally had whole course to myself and was great. Very high quality course and facilities. Great views of the mountains and gorgeous homes surrounding course. I'm from east coast and will def be back next time I visit out here.
Loved it
Challenging, fun and lots of amazing views are the course!! I would definitely play here again!!!
Extremely dry fairways and layout if terrible
I played this course lat weekend and the fairways were totally hard, dried out, dead grass, greens impossible to putt on as well as the play was extremely slow waited on every tee box and (6) hour round of golf!
Vellano, Bring your a game or else
My title say it all. I'm a 12/13 handicap and this course ate me alive! So many carriers with ravines with 100+ yard carriers, 100 yard doesn't sound like much but it will start taking a toll if you can't be in the fairway. Once you hit a great shot on the fairway, you may be challenged with a narrow green with minimal margin for error right or left...precision is a must. Well when you hit that great shot onto the green, now you have a fast green to deal with. I think it's one of the fastest all-around. This was a very difficult course, I played with a friend that was a single digit handicap and he shot 88. Enjoy the course and make sure you choose the right tees.
