About
Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

Golfer Reviews
Nonsensical Starter... Ishmael
There was about 30-40 minutes between groups going out on a 90+ degree Saturday. We were ready to play early, ahead of our 12:20p teetime. The starter refused to let us go out although no other groups were prepared to go out. Nonsensical.... Employ people who use common sense and gets golfers who paid lots of money what they want... Golf placed properly to avoid 5 hour rounds. Also zero water on the course or a beverage cart. Why not? It's Saturday mid-day and nearly 100 degrees.
Terrible service
2nd time there. Our start time was 1220. At about 12pm it was hot so we cut short our warm up time. No body was teeing off or at the starter for a good 10 to 15 minutes. Asked the starter if we could just go. Denied us. Said we have to wait. We sat there for a few more minutes. Asked again told us no, You have to wait.
Hot No cart service !! No water stations! Pretty expansive course. Horrible service. I play cheaper courses in SD and the amenities are way better
Nice Challenge
This golf course was in excellent shape with a very challenging 18 hole layout. Greens were in very good and were tough. Course plays long. We had a great time. We never saw a group in front of us. Worth playing.
Great value and greens, but service gaps and cart restrictions
Played Talega on a Saturday and walked away impressed by the overall value. The green fees are highly competitive for the quality of the layout. The greens themselves were running fantastic—true and fast. However, the back nine did show significant signs of wear and tear, with quite a few unrepaired ball marks.A few logistical downsides to note:The Range: Getting to the driving range is a massive hassle and poorly situated.Cart Restrictions: The carts are equipped with heavy-handed GPS speed regulators/governors that severely limit where you can drive. No Beverage Cart: Despite it being a peak Saturday, there was no beverage cart service out on the course. Stock up at the clubhouse before teeing off.Overall, it is an excellent track for the price, but the course logistics and on-course amenities could use a boost.
General
Spectacular layout; lots of elevation changes w/ challenging par 3s and several blind t-shots. T'd off at noon on a Monday and had the course to ourselves; so, great pace of play.
Good course all round
Love the course. Bunkers are horrible and out of character for the rest of the course. Pace was slow on back 9. 4:50 total time for round. If you can get on for $100 or less its worth it.
Great Course and Staff
My daughter and I went out for late afternoon round and the course is in fantastic shape! the staff were super friendly and extremely helpful.
Talega Golf Club Suggestions
Played Talega for the first time. The course and layout are challenging and fun to play. However, basic maintenance needs to be addressed. For example, grass and weeds growing out of sand traps are unacceptable - it's a simple fix and just takes a disciplined approach by staff and the grounds crew. In addition, many of the traps needed raking - since we played at 10:30 am, I doubt if significant play occurred prior to that to disturb that many traps. Suggest Talega hire a young person to circle the course during the day and rake unattended traps (also, since Talega is a public course, recommend staff advise all players when they pay for their rounds to please rake the traps after use). In addition, the signage to Hole #10 is terrible - one of the staff misdirected us at the turn and we ended up at the driving range; then we followed a long path (perhaps 1/3 mile) to the #10 tee, stopping along the way to question if we were on the right path.
In summary, the course has a lot of potential, but I question if the current management has the vision to maximize it.
Fun day on the course
Greens were in great condition, fairways were ok, tee boxes a little ragged.
Pace was crisp on the front (2:00), bogged down on the back (2:30). 2 or 3 holes we arrived at teebox and group ahead was still waiting to tee off.
i was one of 3 singles put together and it was helpful to have one person who knew the course are there are a number of holes where the lines are unclear. Particularly if playing from the tips as the other 1st timer was.
Overall fun day
Terrible Conditions and Staff
Conditions were horrendous , especially for $180 a tee time. I’ve been to municipal courses for a fraction of the price. Dead grass literally surrounding the cups, 3/4 of the greens were dead, it was horrendous. Pro shop guy was extremely rude acting like this is some prestigious course. Never again. Went with my brothers and we will never recommend this course to anyone, we’ve been telling everyone the exact opposite. Terrible terrible course and staff.
