Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

Pass

Greens were all very bumpy. Fairways starting to turn yellow.

Starter allowed a 5-some in front of us. Said it was two 3-somes. It was not.

Expected better.

Nickel and diming you where they can

This course has a nice layout so that is why I have come back to play it a couple of times. With that said, after yesterday’s experience in the golf shop I do not believe I will ever play here. It was Mother’s Day. Course was relatively empty. I could’ve played Tijeres Creek, Shore Cliffs, San Clemente Municipal or Strawberry Farms and decided here because it has been awhile.

I was originally set up to play with 4 people. In the golf shop I told the person checking me in that I have my mom riding with me. I could’ve see he was trying to figure how to charge. Which after playing over a 100 courses I assume that would mean worse case scenario cart fee(which I’m sure we all agree is ridiculous but accept it). But he proceeds to tell me that he is going to be doing me a favor because it’s Mother’s Day and won’t charge me a 3rd cart fee. Meaning that because I was suppose to ride with someone I don’t know but has my same tee time. My mom needs to be charged a cart fee, I need to be charged a cart fee, even though a cart fee is already with what I’m paying.

So I sat there in my mind thinking, Even the more top tier course from Torrey pines, sand piper and courses like Trump never said that to me.

So after playing the course and a good 9 tee boxes being short of being a jump rather then anything resembling flat. I said to myself, I won’t complain because they won’t care or get it. But I’ll write a review expressing they are going to loose more then just a stimulus $30 cart fee, but future business from myself and others that take this review into consideration. It’s probably time we hold some of these golf courses accountable.

Slow play, slow greens

Talega is a fine course in general. The layout is a bit funky between the front and back 9's, as the front is par 35 with (3) par 3s.

2 things stood out for me this round: first, the pace of play is too slow. We were waiting on every tee box for what seemed like 5 minutes with a 824a tee time. Never saw a Marshal once to check on where the bottleneck was.

Second were the pace of the greens. I'm assuming they were punched recently but although there wasn't any sand on the greens, they were bumpy and very slow.

Talega.....could be so much better

Talega.....i have played here about 15 times in the last 3 seasons. I do enjoy the course specifically the greens are always in great conditions and the course is very playable. However, the amenities and service are lacking. First, the range being offsite is extremely inconvenient. Second, there hasn't been a cart girl or any beverage service on the course for the last 2 seasons. So the only way to hydrate is at the clubhouse. There are no drinking fountains on the course either. When it is the summer this is absolutely ridiculous. Last, the food/bar, there isn't a bar for one and the only food is like concession food. Overall the course is solid but everything else lacks. DO BETTER.

Great Round for a Great Price

Had a 12:30 p.m. tee time for a Sunday. It ended up being a hot deal for about $70, which is significantly less than their regular rates, which I've seen anywhere between $120 all the way up to $170!

If you are the kind of person who is used to having a beverage cart going around during your round, Don't count on it. There's a halfway point right after the ninth hole where you can stock up before your round or halfway through your round. I've never been the kind of person to use the beverage cart so I don't ding them for that.

The course itself is very nice but also demanding with plenty of opportunities to lose your ball if you can't hit it relatively straight. It combines forced carries, elevation changes, well-placed bunkers, and greens that have become quicker in recent months. It also has its share of forced carries that every tee box must deal with to get to the green on multiple holes.

In preparation for the round, the driving range is about a mile away from the club house and also has a short game area. Near the club house, there is a good-sized putting green to get a feel fir the greens for the round ahead.

Overall, if you have the money or get a good deal, this course is a great experience!

No golf course experience. Felt like a ghost town. Seemed empty. No club ambiance. Front nine is nice but back nine is just too hard for the average golfer and slows down pace of play. Lots

Of shrubs and canyons that need to be better maintained. Fences are falling down.

Good experience

We had a great time, the course layout is good, there are some challenging holes, take snacks and drinks with you because there doesn't appear to be a refreshment cart driving around. All around a good experience and we'll be playing there again.

Punched greens and gave no notice

They punched the greens and did NOT disclose it anywhere on their website or during booking. Course is not in great shape. Fairways are very dry and there are tons of dead spots/flooded spots.

Pretty nice for first visit

They had just punched their greens, so that wasn't great, but they weren't TOO bumpy all things considered. A couple tee boxes were a little wonky, and a few bunkers were quite hard packed, with one even having standing water/mud in it. But overall fairways and rough was in good shape. Great weather and nice challenging layout, esp. the back 9 with a couple holes having "blind" shots.
