Talega Golf Club
About
Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

Could be nice
The only thing good about the course were the greens the rest of the course is in terrible condition all it would take is some money to be spent by the owner or management, then the course could be spectacular
Greedy Owner Refuses to Invest!
They are making money hand over fist via increased playing costs since COVID and haven’t reinvested a single dollar into this course. I know who the owner is and he is shady, cheap, and has no love of golf. Bunkers are garbage. Fairways; crap. He hoards his cash and does nothing to improve the conditions of what used to be a fantastic course. What a shame it is that people like this get to run golf courses.
Used to be much better.
When orher courses in the area are at their peak, Talega disappoints. This course has so much potential that is completely wasted. If the owners put some of the increased green fee money back into the place it could be great. The fairways are so thin and hard it seems you're penalized for putting your tee shot in the fairway. Greens were decent, but others need to fix their own ball marks. 4 hour plus round on a Monday. No marshals and the starter didn't have control of the groups.
Gone down hill
I’ve played Talega maybe a dozen times and this will probably be my last unless there are drastic changes. The course is in a condition you’d expect at a trashy par 3 in Long Beach, there is no marshal to speak to players taking 20 swings per hole—this is not an exaggeration—and worst of all there was no drink cart available. Seriously though, the condition of this course has gone from 4 stars to 2 in 6 months time and the current management needs to be fired.
I left my brand new rangefinder in the golf cart which the starter or the attendant accepted after our round which is around 5;45pm (a bit dark already). The next day i called to ask if they got it, they completely denied it!
Overpriced trash
Hadn't played this course in a few years and was severely disappointed with how the conditions have deteriorated and price has skyrocketed. Paid $80 for a round at 1:20pm and due to packed conditions and slow POP, we finished in darkness around 6pm. No marshals or beverage carts were seen during our round. This course needs lot of work to justify the premium prices and would be overall rated as poor-> average at best.
Tee boxes: Generally good condition. Mostly covered with minor divot damage. Probably the best part of the course.
Greens: Greens were in what appeared to be great condition, but speed was inconsistent and a little lumpy bumpy. Some pin locations were in just ridiculously stupid positions.
Fairways: This is links style fairways with super hard pan and very inconsistent coverage. Fairways were very thin and some areas ok,, while others were barely covered with different grasses
Bunkers: Talega absolutely has the worst bunkers in Southern California. First of all, there are a crap ton of bunkers everywhere. But they are so inconsistent that you never know what kind of bunker sand you'll be in. It ranges to straight up concrete all the way down to beach sand. It made playing out of bunkers way more difficult than it should be. Some greenside bunkers were straight up dirt and impossible to get under the ball. Needs a complete overall and refurbishment.
Talega is in a great area and should be a premium course. They charge like it is, but what they offer is quality less than the muni (or even shorecliffs). The layout on the front nine isn't bad, but some really bad laid out holes on the back nine make it frustrating. There are some really long par 3's, and blind tee shots with forced carries. Unless the conditions improve dramatically, I won't be back anytime soon.
Nice course
I’ve played here before, the course is in better shape now. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Good track, a definite must for so.cal.
Not a great place
Not only sand traps in poor shape, but throughout. Some sand traps hardpan or liner exposed which may injure your wrists. Tee boxes with unfilled divots, uneven, or bare. Fairways with areas without grass, thin or where balls will be in unrepaired divots. Rough some unkept or with no grass. Greens very inconsistent condition and many times slow and shaggy. Bathrooms are filthy on the course and at the half way. Pricing has gone up across the board. Hot deals not worth it with the recent price hike as it is very late in the day compared to sunset to where players can't finish or get only 13 holes.
Deteriorating golf course
This use to be a very nice course. Some sand traps had sand some were like dirt and the rubber lining was protruding in many of them. Fairways were dry and were like hitting off hard ground as the grass was hardly there.
Got a good deal from a golf app
Pace was slow and conditions average! Got a deal on a golf app otherwise I wouldn’t have recommended this course for full price!
Talega
Love this course and its employees. Sand bunkers are in need of sand however. This might be my last round for a while though. They raised hot heal rates to $57 & $67 a round
