Talega Golf Club
About
Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

Bad bunkers
Bunkers were either hard a concrete or had new sand dumped in the so you’d sink to your ankles. Other than that, the course was in good shape. Greens were a little slow.
BEWARE (Post Script)
I forgot to mention the carts are twenty years old.
After I wrote my review, I was baffled with the overall 3.9 rating… and after reading through the authors posting, it’s right there for everyone to see - most of the four star and five star reviewers post twice (or in a few cases three times). Recognize in doing so not only do the ratings get skewed, ownership doesn’t get the message the course needs attention from someone who cares.
Not What It Was…
The course has fallen a notch or two from its heyday and while the bones are intact, the smaller touches are not being addressed. The greens are the best part of the course, but could still be rolled, bunkers are very inconsistent (think obscured hard pan just below the sand), overflowing trash receptacles, dirt migrating onto cart paths, serious wood rot on fencing on hole 8, water feature on hole 5 in disrepair and pace of play all lessen the experience of what would be previously described as a jewel of south county - but no more. If I knew Fred Couples, I would let him know the course is headed downhill and the fall from grace is sufficiently disappointing that I’ll be frequenting other courses until the ship has been righted.
Great Potential
I'm living in the area temporarily for a job. As a result, I've played many courses in the area, trying to find the best value. The market here clearly bears these high prices. There is no shortage of player demand. I consider Talega average in it's class. As other reviewers have noted, fairway conditions are below average, the greens are bumpy and the tee boxes have their share of divots. But, for the money even at this price it seems a better value that Tijeras Creek but not as well kept as Arroyo Trabuco, both higher priced.
Challenging course
Green was pretty fast, good length of rough. There are several blind shoot. But, it was fun. I like the challenging course. I definitely come back and break my score soon.
What happened?
My son and I both looked at each other and said this is the worst golf outing ever. No official starter no course Marshall, no cart /Refreshments person, fairways are hideous in places, surrounding landscaping completely overgrown. Amenities on the course completely dilapidated. If you don’t hit perfectly on the fairway your ball is gone, never lost so many balls in my life. Not enjoyable. Bunkers used to have white puffy sand, now concrete
Great mid week value
Overall great. The greens were a little bit bumpy and some fairways had dead spots but I usually don't notice because I typically don't hit fairways. They got me out early and I really never had to speak to anybody except the starter. Beautiful scenery on the course and it indefinitely has its challenging holes. Unless you are a scratch golfer make sure to have a few extra balls. Good job Talega!
Greens excellent.. layout is lots of fun.. challenging
Could be nice
The only thing good about the course were the greens the rest of the course is in terrible condition all it would take is some money to be spent by the owner or management, then the course could be spectacular
