Talega Golf Club
About
Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

Potential
Course was in poor condition overall. Greens were decent. I spent time on every green repairing ball marks that were fresh from the groups ahead of me. Pace was slow, no marshal or ranger. I was behind a 3 some of hacks and they asked me to join them on the 18th tee. For $15 more I played Monarch Beach which was in pristine condition comparatively.
Great layout…very poorly maintained.
The course is a beautiful design. It’s a shame they are too cheap to maintain it properly.
They obviously skimped on watering it and now most of it is burned out and will not recover… even though they keep pouring water on it now trying to make it come back to life.
The people are rude and ruthless over T-times. Out fourth couldn’t make it, the course filled the spot with a single, but would not even discuss any type of credit. Whispering to each other behind my back about the fact that they added a single to our group (with no refund or credit for us)
Horrible way to treat people.
My favorite course in OC but staffing sucks
Absolutely prefer this course over Tijeras Creek or Strawberry Farms. However, the starter is clueless and pro shop is not helpful.
Slow round and course wasn’t that nice for the price.
Course was in bad condition, over watered it in many areas (like playing in a swamp) greens where in bad as well and the pace of play was a joke. Played the front in 2 hours 15 minutes (not great) but the back it took 2 hours to play 6 holes. No Marshall or even a care from the pro shop. Play elsewhere if you can.
I love Talega!
If you come to play golf and improve your game, this is a perfect choice! All holes are very interesting play and maintained. Be sure to ASK before you show up if the greens have been punched. Usually that happens every few months a year as part of upkeep of ANY golf course. Talega is a beautiful golf course that doesn’t get enough credit for how fun it is. The layout is great, it’s a nice and quiet place, it’s got a few blind shots that will keep you on your toes and the par threes are all memorable and fun. Very forgiving fairways as they are wide open, and just the right amount of undulations everywhere to keep you calculating distance on your shots or putts. Greens are so much fun! It’s a long golf course so I suspect returning carts soon after sun down is good so you don’t get caught in the dark too far from the clubhouse. Overall great fun for single players and groups. I return here every chance I get! Staff has always been nice and flexible, their carts in decent condition and marshalls do a good job of keeping pace and reminding players to be mindful of cart safe areas to help keep the course in good shape. If I had a wish about something to change here, it would be a small train to the driving range. But it’s not a big deal. Fairways are very forgiving so you can get your iron and woods game going in the first 3 holes. By hole four, you’ll be loose as a goose and ready to reach that par 3 green in no time.
Outstanding and fun golf course!!
Every hole in great shape and challenging enough for a good time. The greens are always nice and a bit faster than you think with nice undulations. The course is extremely pleasant and offers great pace of play. A couple of blind shots in some challenging holes followed by two very wide open ones for a nice cooldown. Everyone has a smile at hole 18. I’ll be returning every chance I have.
Slow pace No marshal
Played in 5hrs 30mins
No marshall in control
Course was still recovering from lots of damages
Layout is fun
Rude staff
Came here for my nephews birthday and tee’d off at 6:09am, second grouping off in the morning. Played the front in under 2hrs grabbed a bite at the turn and headed to the back. On number 10 we are putting out and the group behind us hits up on us and rolls a ball up on the green. On the next hole we have a young man come out and tell us “we are three holes behind”….really after playing the front in 2 hrs? Really rude and unnecessary - totally fine letting the group behind play through. Ironically on their carts they have a place of play and we were 15 minutes ahead of schedule the entire day and finished in 3:50 minutes with grabbing food at the turn. I do not appreciate being rushed on what was supposed to be a relaxing day - and when I brought this up upon returning to the clubhouse (again 3:50 minutes total) all I got was a smug response taking no responsibility where they were clearly wrong and handled it poorly. Will not be returning here as they do not know how to properly manage a course or treat their players with respect.
Decent Conditions and Fast Play
Played early 7:30am and moved quickly through the course in 3 1/2 hours. Greens were in very good shape but a little slow due to the heat. Could see the maintenance team is getting the course in good condition. Bunkers were excellent to hit from.
Nice course but in the middle of upgrades
I was a little disappointed in some of the conditions but I think it’s probably just because they are in the middle of upgrading it. I am sure it will be really nice in a few months.
As for the course itself, it can be pretty tricky. There are several holes that require some planning and course management, so hopefully your first time will be with someone who knows it.
Way Overpriced
I understand inflation and Playing on Saturday mornings causes prices to rise at Golf Courses, but if you are charging over $150 per round then you cannot get away with terrible tee boxes that are unkept, or fairways that are unkept, grass that is not cut.
The course layout is good and challenging. Unfortunately I will not be playing this course again any time soon without some major investment and improvement in the rough, on the tee boxes, or on the fairways. Very disappointed.
For $10 more we were able to to Black Gold Golf and that is night and day.
Good not great
I liked this course. Good tee to green layout. Condition—pretty good for public links. Not great. But good. I’d play again. Greens typical …a little bumpy…ball mark repair not good. But fine overall. It should be a 60-90 dollar round, not $115.
