Talega Golf Club
About
Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

Solid course
Good course & variety of holes
Nice greens / Tee boxes could be a bit better
well maintained, good pace of play
course was in great shape, pace of play was 4 hours, greens rolling fast and true. great value for the money. just wish the driving range was on site
Love Freddie's Courses
First time played little expensive but you want quality you have to pay. was not disappointed couple's courses always tricky and definitely challenging. will definitely return. course conditions very good little dry in some areas but overall better than most out there. Greens. bunkers and fairways good only remotely negative is tee boxes not the best. you have to play few times to understand target lines and yardages needing to score well.
High Expectations / Luke Warm Feelings
7:30am tee time, but the driving range doesn’t open until 9am, not sure why that is a thing. Also, the driving range is not on the course so be prepared ahead of time if you are teeing off after 9am.
Carts have an old school range display, super nostalgic, but not very useful.
Greens were a little rough and the tee boxes seemed to be an after thought for the maintenance crew. Most of the time it seemed like we were teeing in a flat piece of grass that was maybe cut once a month?
Was super stoked to play such a recommended course, the layout is great and the views are nice, however, I was really disappointed in the overall conditions of the course given the price point. I rather play three rounds at San Clemente, San Juan, or even Newport Beach as compared to one round here.
This course is hard especially for beginners.
Great course to challenge all golfers.
I would bring someone here to learn.
Bring extra balls. The weather in July and the views of this course is worth the price.
No beverage cart on the 4th of July!
Overall great experience. But surprised to find out there was no beverage cart on the course. Fortunately I bought a Gatorade from the snack shack prior to round and joked about a cart girl. The guy there said, oh, we don't have one today. He said it isn't busy enough. Just an FYI... when you check in and pay, they should inform you THEN so you can stock up on beverages and ice as it was high 80's, close to 90 degrees when the sun came out. And the cooler on the carts was empty. No ice in there. They really should inform golfers of this when we pay so you can prep your cart and beverages PRIOR to the round. Not when you are already dehydrated at the turn.
Great course with lots of varied terrain and challenges
We love coming to Telega. Out of all the public courses in the area, it has the best quality course conditions and variety of holes around (for the money). The pro shop is decent, as is the driving range. There are bunkers and cabbage, and water hazards everywhere, so it’s easy to lose a few balls (plan accordingly). The staff is always friendly and the Marshall makes his way around the course to check-in on people. It’s our go-to course whenever we want to play 18 nearby. Now, for some cons:
The snack bar at the turn is really slow if you’re trying to get a bite, so don’t stop in there thinking you can get a hot dog in 20 seconds and you’re back to the cart.
The pace of play can be much quicker than you want it to be. I say this because we have sometimes had people behind us constantly hitting into us on the fairways and greens due to the multiple blind tee boxes where people are hitting over obstructed-view fairways, not realizing you’re still in their ball path. It can make for a very rushed experience where you aren’t taking your time to think about your swing and it causes a lot of stress and shanked balls. The last time we played there, it felt like the group behind us was breathing down our neck the entire time, trying to rush us off the course. We had balls landing around us while we were trying to swing our next shot.
Don’t play too early!
Conditions were ok for a public course. We started at 6:50 am , they were watering fairways, hit , go to shot they would turn off sprinklers, wet and some mud. On the first three greens a man was watering and was oblivious to us trying to go to green . On the first par 3 , the worker left his cart in front of the green and was working on it. The second 9 had les workers and was more enjoyable.
Don’t play too early
Slow play
5 hours and 15 minutes to play a round of
golf. Overpriced for what you’re getting
