Talega Golf Club
About
Talega Golf Club is one of southern California's treasures, offering a challenging Fred Couples layout that sits above the "Spanish Village by the Sea." The course winds through canyons and valleys offering scenic views of the surrounding countryside throughout. The diverse layout will test your shot-making skills and there are also several interesting risk-reward opportunities including two reachable par 4s that will please long hitters. There is an abundance of bunkers coming into play, especially along the fairways, and golfers will be faced with the occasional blind shot. The greens are extremely quick and not a single one is flat. Nearly every green has multiple tiers. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes. One of Talega's most memorable holes is the monstrous 13th. This par 5 requires a carry over not just one but two ravines.

Still OK
Sadly fairways and tee boxes have many bare spots making it a little muddy from a recent rain. Fortunately the challenges of many of the holes makes it a fun course to play.
Talega
We booked the 6:36 am tee time and finished in 3 in a half hours. Saw no one behind us the whole day. First tee time makes you feel like it’s your private course. Greens were fast and challenging. Fairways were great.
Nice Course but Slow Unenforced Pace of Play
Fun but long day. We were actually a group of 5 & were pushing the twosome in front of us who were pushing the foursome in front of them. At one point we were looking at a 5 1/2 hour round & asked the “Marshall” to speed up the pace & eventually it picked up . Ultimately finished in just over 5 hours. Too much area blocked off for replanting-probably should do it in smaller chunks vs all at once which is what it seemed. No beverage carts which is ridiculous on a hot Fri afternoon. Staff is young, friendly & sympathetic to some of our complaints. All that aside it’s a fun course & good layout that plays fairly easy so we’ll be back although early to mid week not on a weekend.
Plays like a $40 Muni
This place has been in disrepair for years now. It just seems to get worse and worse. Inconsistent greens, fairways are bare in some areas and complete mush in others. A lot of areas are roped off. Tee boxes are somehow overgrown and torn up at the same time. Every time I come here I swear I will never come back, but this time I think it will stick
Need A Starter
We have played Talega many times. The front 9 starts slow but steady. But then holes 5-7-8 are Par 3s and Hole 6 is the toughest on the course. This ALWAYS slows the course immensely. The Manager should “know this” and enforce their true “9-minute” tee off separations. You should not tee off on Hole 1 until the group in front of you has cleared the green.
Currently poor course conditions in places
The course is currently under a lot of repair on the tees and fairways Lots of new grass is being grown. The 16th green is a pile of unrepaired pitch marks. I had a fun round but will wait till next year before returning.
Only being allowed access to a cart 5-10 minutes before tee-off is a real pain, as you have to hand-carry your heavy clubs 50 to 100 yards plus, which is not good for older, retired players.
There is NO warm-up or practice area on site - a real negative - not even warm-up nets found at clubs throughout the world. Very poor.
Golf Course under repair
The course was in terrible condition. Most of the fairways had large roped off areas. The tee boxes on the front nine were basically bare. It was difficult to find any grass. The front nine had been over watered to the point it was mushy. We had to move our balls regularly just to hit them. The ball would stop immediately upon landing because of all the water. The greens on the front nine were extremely bumpy and had numerous divots. Definitely not worth the money.
Challenging Course
Second time here and end of summer. Course was a little rough. Fun to play. Some very interesting holes. You need course knowledge.
Poor course conditions, even poorer staff attitude
Course conditions are bad, lack of amenities and really really poor attitude from staff. I’d give Talega another chance but I’d be hard-pressed to support the unprecedented lack of professionalism. I recommend going elsewhere for better courses and management.
Rough Time of Year
The course conditions were somewhat rough. However, it's that time of year. I really wish golf courses like this one would reduce their rates when yearly maintenance is under way. I do like this course.
