Foxtail Golf Club - North Course
About
Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park offers two championship courses, the North and the South, situated in the heart of wine country. The North Course originally opened in 1974 but underwent a major renovation that completely redesigned the layout, improving its conditions and making it more challenging. The par-72 North is considerably longer and more difficult than the par-71 South. The North features multiple doglegs and strategically placed sand traps that will test even the most experienced players. To make the golf course a bit more approachable, water hazards don't play a prominent role, though they do appear on a few holes, and the forward tees are very player friendly. With 36 holes available, Foxtail G.C. is able to host tournaments and events while still having another 18 holes open to the public.

best course for the money in sonoma county
I've played this course for over ten years, 6-7 times a year. The course conditions are decent to moderate depending on fairway watering. I played in mid summer & found winter conditions on & around most fairways. That is to say A-Standing water. B-Mud holes. C-rough grass uncut. That being said I found the middle of the fairways dry, wellcut, & decent roll. The greens were in great shape as they usually are. Good putting is a must to score well on this course. Playing from the white tees allows the high handicapper a chance to score well.
Terrible fairways and mud traps
Greens are pretty good but bunkers have no sand, and fairways are terrible 90% of the time. I would recommend to doesn't care about conditions
I enjoy the layout but the course is in terrible condition.
I played the course again today and as usual enjoy the layout (one of the few who actually likes the South better than the North Course). Unfortunately, the course is in terrible condition. Fairways have too many bare spots yet there is too much water on much of the course. The traps are as hard as rock (no sand, just clay) and the greens are spotty at best.
This course is a great value.
The course has many unusual and challenging features so it is fun and interesting. Someone went around and planted trees right in front of where I tend to hit my drives. The greens are less than average speed but they are pretty true and there are lots of interesting double breaks. Pins are relatively accessible but some are hidden by bunkers so there is plenty of golf to play. There are bare spots in the fairways and mud puddles along the cart path on many holes. Accordingly, I recommend you play "winter rules" all year. If you are a perfectionist for conditions, play the North Course which is always pristine.
You get what you pay for.
Very rough course that is in poor shape, but is very affordable to play. It is also the slowest course i have played, so plan on spending a entire day playing. It tends to attract a lot of beginners, I guess thats the price you pay for a cheap course, but don't get me wrong, it's a fun course to for the price.
Fox Tail Golf Course
Great course with friendly staff.
Play there every week and really enjoy it!!
Cheap Rates, Poorly Maintained
Nothing more annoying than a poorly maintained golf course. The fairways are very under-watered; it's actually better to be hitting out of the short rough rather than the hardpan in the center of the fairway. Many of the fairways are so dry that there are large cracks in them where the ground has contracted. Oddly, a few holes have spots that go beyond damp, past soggy and near into swampy - too bad they can't redistribute that water!
The bunkers are generally like wet concrete - hard and damp. Most are better approached with the idea of putting or chipping out of the bunker rather than play a 'splash' sand shot.
Compared to the fairways and bunkers, the greens are in pretty good shape. There aren't any dead or weedy patches, they seem well watered and are well groomed. They roll true and while there aren't many ridges or odd breaks in the layout, the slopes make for generally interesting putts. Only one hole (the par 3 sixth) has a green that is too steeply sloped so that any downhill putt that misses the cup, no matter how softly hit, is likely to end up 12 feet past the hole. Make sure to leave the ball below the pin on that one!
Layout and architecture is pretty boring. Only one dogleg on the course and maybe two holes where water is likely to come into play. Most greens are designed to be approached straight on with bunkers left and right; no real strategy is needed to play the course, just keep hitting the ball straight and you'll be fine.
On the plus side, the rates are cheap. If you're just looking to go out and hit a golf ball around a course, this course will meet your needs and not drain your wallet in the process. The downside of being inexpensive is that on weekends it tends to be crowded with rank amateurs thinking they can play from the blue tees (and the neighboring fairways) On the last outing we heard "fore!" a half-dozen times before finishing the second hole.
what it always has been
this course is a place to go when other courses are full. The north course is better in lay out and condition. lots of room on practice mats and large putting green. It is just an okay facility. Golf is fun there...you would not say what a lousy place to play. Good value and often on golf now discount list. Adobe ground underneath always cracks in the late summer. Traps often wet even in the summer. Greens unchallenging. but adequate. Enjoy.
Course is more challenging that it looks
This is the easier course of the two at this location and is not maintained to the same standard as the other course but still is a good one to play and the cost is very fair.
Nice morning round in North Bay
Played at 7:00 am last Sunday and it was cold but clear. Course is a good test with lots of variety (trees, water, bunkers). Nothing funky or tricked up about this course. Greens were in great shape (fast and smooth) so don't get above the hole or 3 putt is almost given. Pace was decent not horrible. 4some in front seemed like they were struggling on the water holes but moved along ok. Saw a couple of marshals but they just waved and drove on. Good value for weekend rate ($50 with cart on GN). Would definitely play again. Never tried the South but might do that next time.
