Located in a remote southwest part of the city, Tierra Verde is the successful result of Arlington’s Parks and Recreation Department’s effort to provide an upscale, daily fee municipal to complement the other public golf options in town.

Labeled with the new and prestigious Audubon International Signature Certification, this course was the first in Texas and the first municipal course in the world to achieve that honor. The certification signifies that the course was “designed, constructed, and maintained using wildlife conservation and habitat enhancement, water quality management, and water conservation.” What this means for the inconsistent hack is that sprayed shots are not out-of-bounds, but instead buried in a “protected environment.” Unfortunately, the penalty still applies and you’ll need to take your drop. The opening hole is a good example–it’s a basic 355-yard hole, but anything sliced right will find a plum tree thicket, which is the same as hitting it into a lake.

In terms of strategy, you’ll be able to enjoy the generous fairways, but the approaches will require much more precision. Look at the scorecard and get your pars in on the shorter holes, then manage your game to avoid huge numbers on the more difficult holes.

One of the better holes on the front is No. 8, a 518 yard doglegger left that bends hard enough to favor a severe hook. Watch out for the multi-level green and its deceptive turns.

Water is more prominent on the back, as you’ll see on No. 9, a short par 4 that requires a tee shot over water. The narrow fairway squeezes toward the green, and it’s nice to know that the green widens on the back side. The par 5 No. 13 is a birdie hole if you pay attention to the flag position on the huge figure 8 shaped green. This one has water off the tee, as does No. 12. In fact, if you’re short on balls at the turn, you should stock up. Water impacts play time and time again. No. 18, a long par 4 at 437 yards, involves a creek in the fairway that must be carried on the approach.

Other notes: Another bonus at Tierra Verde is the club’s three-hole practice course and lighted driving range.

Getting there : Take US 287 south off of I-20. Find Eden Road and turn right. The entrance is on the left.

"Nice Golf Course"

The course was nice and fun to play. The fairways were tight, lots of bunkers. The greens were very wet and did not run consistent. There were some areas on some greens with not much grass, but had dirt. They charged for my wife to ride the cart with me. $14, which I thought was crazy. I have not been charged for a family member to ride the cart with me for over ten years. They charged too much for the green fee anyway. Overall the course was over rated. I felt like because I did not live in the area they would stick me with a fee. The place was not that crowed, I can see why. It will be a long time before I play there again. A nice touch they have is they meet you in the parking lot to help with the bags and will take your cart back at the end of the day.

Hard to believe it's a public course

Great layout, well designed, well maintained, and very scenic. I played in mid-March on one of the first nice days after a relatively rough winter for the area so the course wasn't very green. Having said that, the fairways and greens were still very well manicured. It's laid out through a nature reserve (which probably violates a true nature reserve classification) so it's a very scenic trek. Also, very few holes run near one another so you rarely see others on the course...it also helps with the safety factor that can be problematic at some public courses. I can't wait to get back out there in a month or two, after things get a bit greener. I would highly recommend this course.

bumpy

the greens were very bumpy. they had new grass buds growing out of them which made putting more challenging than it already is. other than that the course was great. the back nine was even more challenging because the wind started picking up. its worth the drive and it was less than $50 on golf now on a sunday. couldn't pass it up.

Great course!

I love this course and if I did not live in Garland Texas, I would play it a lot more. That being said, I believe the cart should come with a GPS. There are a lot of blind tee shots, lakes and creeks, that if you don't know they are there, you will hit it into those hazards, even if you hit a good shot. Great course however. It is very fair. Tremendous greens. I would recommend this course to anyone who likes a challenge and loves Golf.

Mistake?

Paid the whopping $4 at the pro shop and was informed that GolfNow had made a mistake on the price to play. He mentioned that GolfNow was going to makeup the difference. I assumed that $4 was extremely low for this golf course as I play here with North Texas Seniors 2 or more times a year and I know that the normal senior rate is in the mid to upper $30 area.
I didn't feel great about the information since Tierra Verde would be reimbursed for the difference, but with a 2:10 tee time and a sunset at 6:17 that day, I thought maybe that what was described as "Twilight" rate actually did apply. In other words, why bring it up!?
The putting green is in the worst shape ever. Poi Anna, a weed, has all but ruined it. Luckily it was not nearly as present on the golf holes but if it gets as bad as the putting green in the future, they will be lucky to have players at all.
Don't get me wrong, this is a magnificent golf course, but I hope the Poi Anna goes way.

A great course at a great value with no houses.

Tierra Verde is a course with a good mix of long and short golf holes. # 10 is a very difficult short par 4 and # 11 is a very difficult long par 3. Two of the par 5 holes can be reached with 2 good shots but the other two par 5 holes are definitely three shot holes.

Lots of tight shots so you can lose some balls if your game is not sharp. It follows the philosophy of a good shot is rewarded but a bad shot is punished.

Best of all there aren't any houses on the course. Also a good place to see Roadrunners and occasionally a Bob Cat or Coyote.

One unusual course rule is that no pull carts are allowed on the course.

Great pace of play for a Saturday

I played as a single on the last Saturday in April. The pace of play was good (especially for a muni), the staff is very accomodating (as a woman golfer, I find that is not always the case), and the course was in terrific shape. I managed to snag a "hot deal" tee time, so it was a great value for $34.

Unique Course

From the first time I played I knew I would come back to this course. It's a good mix of open and narrow fairways, it's a challenge if you aren't accurate off the tee. Great signature Par 3 pennisula green, I call this course my third home. Has a great practice area, the Mastery course, they keep up just as well as the main course. If you live in or around Arlington you have to play here.

Pace of play improved since last time!

I played Tierra Verde this past weekend and was shocked at the pace my buddy and I were able to maintain. (3.5 hours) I was playing the course frequently several years ago and finally got fed up with the 4:45 - 5:15 rounds and vowed never to return. My buddy talked me in to giving it another chance. I must say we paid full price on a weekend so perhaps that had something to do with it. Regardless the pace was great and the course was in great shape!

One of the better metroplex courses

Haved played this course many many times since it opened in 1998. Has always been a good test. Irrigation system broke down a few weeks ago and the course didn't get any water for many days. As an result, it is much browner than it should be, but stuff happens as they say.

All in all, still one of the better courses in DFW. For what they charge, especially on weekends, it represents a fair value....not a
great one.

One of the best maintained courses in DFW

The conditions on this course make it well worth the extra money. They don't offer a lot of specials, but the course is always pretty crowded so they don't need too. The fairways on this course are like hitting off of a carpet - they are that good. The greens were also very good.

course is layed out according to Texas terrain. Bermuda green and fairways.

Played at a temperature of 103. Not used to weather, being from mtns. of N.C. Bermuda greens were slow. Well maintained, for the lack of rain. Had to drive ball in fairway,or rough was unplayable.
