The Trails of Frisco Golf Club
About
The Trails of Frisco golf course is one of Jeff Brauer’s most unique designs -- primarily because it doesn’t fit the mold of his other courses. Brauer, who’s known for his open, straight-forward courses, designed this one to tip out to a par 71, 6,900 yards, loaded it with hidden creeks, scenic wetlands, extensive bunkering, and massive greens. In fact, first-timers will be confused here. They’ll face intimidating views off the tee that leave doubt as to the problems that loom ahead, and it is definitely possible to lose all of your balls off the tee if you’re struggling.
The golf course is just flat-out challenging, especially on the front nine. No. 1 opens up with a creek on the left that cuts in front of the green and generally makes its presence known on every shot. The play here is to stay right and stay away from its subtle presence on the left side. The creek comes into play on Nos. 2, 4, 5, and even No. 9, where it chutes from the fairway in front of the green and surrounds the green of this challenging par 4.
All told, water and waste areas are in play on 16 of 18 holes (including every par 3), and the creeks are enhanced by visible lakes and ponds on the back side, even though it is considered a bit easier than the front.

#2 green @ Trails Photo submitted by bowhunter817 on 04/10/2013
How the mighty have fallen.
Trails of Frisco USED to be one of the best kept courses in the metroplex. My how things have changed. It's a shame because the layout is nice with lots of challenging shots. But the course maintenance is just horrid. The greens are decent, but you can tell that ownership/managment has decided that even though they still charge a premium price, they don't want to provide a premium product. Kind of like the Dallas Cowboys these days, but I digress. On the first tee the starter actually said when asked about the coniditions, "the bunkers are all unplayable". There were bare areas all along all of the fairways, and if you missed the fairway by a foot or two, the chances you would be hitting off of hard dirt were very high. The chipping green is a joke. Not sure why they even have it. It's a small mound that looks like it got hit by Iranian drone bombs. Too bad. We still managed to enjoy the day as we paired up with a couple of guys who lived nearby. When I asked them why they still play here, the response was, "it was the only place we could book a tee time last minute". Well, that makes sense. Why else would you pay this much for a poorly managed course. To be fair, the staff was very friendlly and helpful and I still managed to squeak out a 77 in spite of conditions. But I won't be coming back until I know that they've improved the conditions.
Not so good
Course was in poor shape. Lot of dry cracked ground. Many sand traps unplayable.
Too bad, this could be a gem.
I first played Trails of Frisco when it was literally brand new and several times within 5 or 6 years of the opening. It was so much fun and in such good condition. My how it's changed. But, it was the only place I could get an early tee time for a Saturday morning. At $90 I've got to say, this was thievery. I wish I had taken pictures from our round this past Saturday. How sad that this course is in such bad condition. Several tee boxes completely barren of ANY grass. Some so bad we moved either up or back to find some grass. The greens were actually pretty nice. The layout is fun and challenging. A couple of the holes, one in particular, is more challenging than most golfers can handle. #17 (if I remember correctly), a 380+ par 4 has a landing area of less than 200, then a creek to cross, a second landing area at about 230 - 250, then yet another creek, then about 100 to the green. The risk reward unless you can consistently hit a 240 yard straight tee shot, or drive of over 270, is not worth the risk. But then you're left with a 200 yard uphill approach shot. I did manage to squeeze out a 77 from the white tees. Several holes you have to be very strategic in your landing spots, which is awesome, IF, the course is in good shape. With all the rain DFW got this spring and summer I would have thought all areas of the course would be lush. NOT. Lots of barren spots on either side of the fairways and a few in the middle. The short game pitching area is a joke. Why even have it there. A small 25 yd "green" that has a 8' pot hole in the middle of it. LOL. We were even warned by the starter on the first tee that ALL of the bunkers were basically unplayable. Which he was spot on! They were horrible!! It's really a shame. This course has the layout and potential to be great. Probably won't be back!
Great Round
Great place to play. Super fairways and green, and toughest approach shots you will ever see.
Great Course
We always have a good time here. Really happy to see the cart paths being renewed.
Trails of Frisco Worth a Shot
5 yrs since I played here. Very impressed. Greens and fairways in excellent condition especially greens. Due to flooding several months ago lots of repairs being done on bridges/paths. Plenty of challenging holes where accuracy and strategy play major role in scoring. Ample opportunity to lose lots of golf balls and get double bogeys if game not sharp. Pace on this day was excellent. Round and cart only $43 so well worth it. Will return.
Course
Can’t wait till I get to all the bridges taken care of the golf cart routes
Hidden Gem
With the TeeOff discount, this was very afffordable for a mmidday round. Course fairways and greens were in good condition. For first timers, Get an upclose look at the "creeks" scattered throughout the course that cross the fairways. They are much wider than appear from a distance. That forced carry has to be much longer than it appears.
On several tee boxes, hanging tree branches significantly limit what you need to hit your drive. Bunkers have no sand and should be considered ground under repair even tho they're not marked as such.
Any hooks or slices are going to be lost, so be sure to stay in the fairway
stff in pro shop and on course are friendly and helpful.
Fun, friendly, and pretty good shape for September in Texas
In a nutshell, fairways and greens were immaculate, but tee boxes were almost all hard pan and bunkers were in awful shape. It’s a nitpick to be sure, as I’d gladly play here next week, but I feel like it should be noted.
Nice greens and fairways, needs marshals and cleanup
The course has a good layout and the greens and fairways are okay. We had 2 definable problems. 1, the pace of play was bad. Group in front of us was taking upwards of 30 min a hole and had a child driving the golf cart. Said child was driving on greens and almost into a creek but luckily the bridge had a beam to stop them(photo included). 2, there is trash everywhere. I thought that a rolled up napkin was a ball multiple times.
Would like to spike out the positives. Staff was very friendly to me, not issues there. Also, thought the fairways were quite nice and more open than you normally find in the DFW area. Conditions maybe lacked a little but given the time of year I really can’t fault them.
Overall, enforce pace of play and general rules. Pick up trash or kick out losers that litter.
Shot my best round and first ever eagle!
The course was overall in great condition! I ended up getting my first eagle and also broke 90, I shot an 87!
This course should be 45 bucks…for now
No sand in the bunkers. One bridge is out so we started on the tenth, I couldn’t get my gps watch to start on the tenth. I could edit the scorecard but had no idea of the lay out and hazards for holes 10-18. The website has a hole layout diagram but it’s not on the score card. A few holes have double creeks so that would have helped. It was $59. Right now it plays like $40-$45 Staff was great!
Trails of Frisco can get better
Played on a weekend morning. Pace of play was good but the course condition was not up to par given the price. Carts are older and no GPS, cart paths were in need of repair, some bunkers were totally unplayable, and the fairways were very under watered. For $90+ I would play somewhere else. Not a good value for the money.
Great greens and above average fairways…. And that’s it
Tee boxes and bunkers were awful. Schedule tee times right on top of each other so there’s a backup on each box. Definitely not worth the $100 price tag. Won’t be playing again
Just bad
Cart girl didn't show up for work. 97 degrees outside. Greens are in good shape. Fairways are not good. This course is in steep decline. What was once a beautiful, well kept, challenging course is now a shadow of its former self. Pace of play was atrocious. Bridges are in disrepair. No signs on cart path in intersections. Cart paths caving in everywhere. In order to play hole 1, you hae to tee off, then drive over to hole 10, drive the length of it, hit a dirt trail back over to hole 1, then drive back up the fairway to your balls. They had us tee off on 10. When we got back to 1 for the back 9, it took us 31 minutes to make it off hole 1. Unacceptable. 5 1/2 hour round on a Sunday morning.
Honestly, I can overlook a lot of things. I know maintenance is expensive... but there is no way I can overlook not having a beverage cart on the course when it's 97 degrees - forcing a stop at the turn in a 5 1/2 hour round. This is the second time (2 for 2) that's happened this year. Last year the course seemed to be maintained better, but not great.
Disappointing round and I don't think I'll return to Frisco Trails. I've given it 5 tries the last couple of years and I always say 'no more' - it's gotten bad enough that I mean it.
If this goat trail were $29 to play, I'd expect exactly what we got... but not at the price they're asking. It's a complete ripoff.
