The Golf Club of Texas
About
The best testament one can give The Golf Club of Texas (formerly known as The Golf Club of Texas at Briggs Ranch) is that it hosts some big local tournaments. The large greens and tee boxes are some of the very best San Antonio has to offer. This is truly a high end facility. If you have not been out to enjoy this course you really need to. The place is all greened up and with the unique landscaping it's just a real pretty experience with great golf. The golf carts are outfitted with GPS which gives accurate distance to the pin and shows the contours of the greens. This track combines Links Style golf with Hill Country golf, giving players a taste of both types of golf. The course is among the best that San Antonio has to offer. The senior staff is very experienced and the service is all that you would expect at a high-value public course. The new clubhouse is beautiful and features a full service restaurant. After playing a round, you will really enjoy just sitting on the porch and taking in the view.
Directions: 20 Minutes from downtown. Take U.S. 90 west to Texas 211 (2 exits past loop 1604) and we on the right. From downtown take 90 west to Texas 211.

Great Course In Waiting
As the course is continues to mature, it will only get better. If you have GPS, you will play the back 9 first. Course itself is really starting to come around. The greens have recently been top dressed, and the back 9 were completely sanded. I really have no complaints and will definitely play again in the future. I am also contemplating their $99 Annual Pass. This allows you to play for only $49. So it would take you have to play a few times to make the pass worth. Hoping they don't raise green fees once the course matures. Hit 'em straight.....
Love the grass
This course is all Zoysia grass - fairways and greens. Ball sits on top of the grass like it's teed up. Wide fairways. 3-4 of the greens were punched/sanded but the rest of them were very good. You need to play this GC.
Thanks for the 5 star review! We appreciate the feedback about your time at the course. The course will get better with time and we hope to see you back soon!
new course for me
Loved the course layout. Forgiving, and in great condition. Some greens were recently sanded so I imagine they'd be better in a few weeks.
Thanks for the 5 star review! We're glad you loved the course layout! The course will only get better with time, we hope to see you again soon!
Should be even be better by spring 2016
1st time playing since they reopened. Think the course is pretty good right now but with
Some maturity I believe the course will be one of the nicest in area. Staff was very friendly
Location for me is awesome but most of the people I play with a little far.
If they want to get there advertised rates they are going to have to keep course is good shape. At the price I payed it was a very good deal (Golfnow hot deals)
Thanks for the 4 star review! We're glad you enjoyed your round and hope to see you again soon! The course is maturing and will just keep getting better with time.
6 Million Well Spent
Wow what a course! The 6 million dollar renovation is incredible! Thanks for investing in San Antonio!
Thanks for the great 5 star review! We're so glad you enjoyed all the improvements and you will continue to see the course come together. Hope to see you soon!
It's back!
I was a member at this course before it closed for renovations like two years ago. My first time back, on the course, after its been opened was about the same. The course played a little easier which would probably please most people seeing as how the course is pretty hard, playing from the back tees. The changes seemed to be more in the landscaping of the course than anything else. The new fairways and greens were alright, but didn't seem to change anything too much. It is much easier to find your ball with how many trees and bushes they pulled out.. Overall it played nice, but still not worth the high price. Golfnow it guys Golfnow!!!
Thanks for giving us another shot! We do offer great packages for local residents such as the Dewssweepers Club and the San Antonio Players Pass, lots of ways to save money! Hope to see you soon.
Great Comeback !!
Played the GCOT in past years, and have to say, these renovations/upgrades have restored the course to its past attractiveness. One upgrade they might consider is re-doing the cart paths. Pro Shop staff, Food & Beverage, etc. were all very welcoming and friendly. Just hope they don't try to recoup all of their financial investments in one month......cut some slack on green fees/carts, and the numbers of players will go up appreciably.
Thanks for the review and the feedback about your time at the course! We love hearing what our golfers took away from their time at the course. Thanks for the heads up about the snake!

Hard enough, easy enough, once the greens mature a little more, this will be a real Texas gem. Lee Trevino would be proud.
Thanks for the review! We're glad you enjoyed the course and hope to see you again soon!
Great counter
I'd play there again......my group had a great time
Thanks for the nice review, see you soon!
Getting Better
I have read a lot about this course and how it's on the come back. If the grounds were watered more, it would be an excellent course. The tee boxes, fairways and green show signs of distress from lack of watering, but my understanding is it is better than before. The carts are gas, we prefer electric. The clubhouse is very nice...worth $33 on GolfNow, but sure I would pay much more until it gets more water. Sand trap were pretty dry as well.
Thanks for your feedback about the course! There are a few dry spots as with all golf courses during a drought. Additionally, as with any new golf course or reconstructed course, irrigation heads will need to be adjusted one by one over the course of time. Wind additionally plays a role in coverage. Rain is always best to ensure 100% coverage.
Needs some polish
It might not be fair that I'm giving such a low assessment of the course because it has been resurrected in a different form and just reopened last week.
However, in the interest of helping the management to achieve their best results, I'll include my thoughts and hope the staff will take it to heart.
First, the good part: the layout is great. I like the changes from a links-style desert course to one that is a little more forgiving and not so many waste areas that were main features of the old course.
The Clubhouse looks great and I'm sure once all the improvements are finished, it will be even better.
I also think the move to total Zoysia grass is smart and will help greens to last throughout the hot summer temperatures.
OK, now for the Not-so-good:
The greens were pretty rough. Lots of "worm turds" (bumpy and unpredictable) and they were quite furry, making it early impossible to read a putt correctly. Everybody in our group routinely left putts short and they never broke as much as they should, once the greens are cut, rolled and cleaned up. We actually considered a two-putt rule once you were within 20 feet of the cup.
The short rough or "first cut" gets really treacherous when you leave it that long. Zoysia can really turn a club face outward or inward depending on the grain. I can see how the second cut would be a good place to leave the grass longer but it seemed a little too punishing for the first.
For the fairways though, the Zoysia was perfect. The ball sits up nicely and it's easy to get a good pure strike on the ball. This is the greatest reason to have this grass in Texas.
Y'all might also want to put somebody out on the course with refreshments. Getting something cold to drink had to wait until you made it to the clubhouse. That's just lost revenue and hard on players who are experiencing 95 degree heat.
One more thing about the food & beverage: I think it would be better if you stocked the Gatorade in the restaurant area rather than the golf shop. I had to buy the Gatorade in the golf shop then walk back over to the restaurant to get a cup of ice. Kinda dumb.
Overall, it was a good experience and I will be back. Just hope things improve a bit more.
Thank you for your feedback about the course! We truly appreciate you taking the time to give us your experience at the course. Great to hear that you enjoyed the clubhouse and the tee to green Zoysia grass. As the course matures and weather improves, the golf course will only get better! The green heights were just lowered Sunday so that greens speeds will mirror those of the finest courses in the area.We did run a beverage cart from 10am-4pm so we apologize if you miss it, Gatorade can also be purchased in the grill as well as the proshop. We hope you give us another shot and come back out!
Back In Business
First off, ignore any reviews before August, 2015. The course was shut down and renovated in 2014-2015 and just reopened at the end of August.
GCOT's claim to fame is their all Zoysia grass course, the only one like it in the country. I loved the Zoysia in the fairways and around the greens. The ball sits up like its on a tee, giving you a lot of confidence and clean strikes.
The course is FUN with wide fairways, massive greens on many holes and almost no trees. It's challenging without being punishing. That's a big plus in my book.
I saw some other's complaints about the staff from their opening weekend. I am a member of their Range Program (a reasonable $45/mo) and my experience with the Pro Shop and wait staff has always been excellent. Perhaps they were still working out the kinks on opening weekend.
My only complaint about the course is the cost. I'd like to see the course succeed and it is a bit pricey at $79 for a weekend round. A $99 player's program pass will knock that down to $49, but there are a lot of courses in SA that can be played for under $50 with comparable conditions. Especially on GolfNow.
The restaurant serves some really delicious food and is worth the trip just for a meal.
Stellar Improvement!
The golf course itself has undergone major renovations to the benefit of San Antonio golfers and all who visit. I love the layout of the course, the new grass is awesome, the environment of the clubhouse is fantastic. My one complaint is the wait staff in the bar/restaurant. The manager Todd is an amazing guy, but of the many times I have visited, I have yet to have a pleasant experience with the waitstaff. They seem to be lacking in personality or they are all just very unhappy. Other than that you will enjoy your visit.
Hi there - thank you for the review and feedback! Great to hear that you enjoyed the clubhouse and new grass. We're sorry that you were disappointed with the wait staff, we will address this internally hope you give us another shot!
Great Location
I was extremely impressed to see the condition of the course after some crazy weather with tons of rain in the Spring and then no rain for the last 30/40 days.
The course played fairly to our group which had different skill sets.
Staff was incredibly professional and very accommodating.
Greens were slow but true, you just had to hit a little firmer than what you thought.
Overall, it was a great experience and I will certainly play it many more times and it's close to home.
Thank you for the 5 star review! We hope you make us your hometown course and keep coming back!
Great value for the money
My overall experience playing the Golf Club of Texas was wonderful. Even though carts are not allowed in parking lot I found everything very convenient. The driving range is in great shape and putting green smooth. The overall on course conditions are in great shape. The greens are a little slow but to be expected after renovation.
Staff are all very friendly and informative.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS COURSE!!!
Hi there - thank you for the 5 star review! We're so glad you enjoyed the course and that you found the staff friendly and helpful! We hope to see you again and thanks for playing at GCOT!
The Golf Club of Texas is Reborn!
Played this course on opening day and again today. The course is in great shape and the Zoysia grass is wonderful to play on. For those of us that remember what this course looked like when it closed several years ago and also remember what it looked like when it first opened many years ago, "THE COURSE IS BACK" and just may be better than when it first opened. The owners have made some subtle changes to some of the holes and some changes are not so subtle. The management and employees are good people. Go meet them!
Nice, twice in one week! Thanks for giving us another shot! We're so glad you enjoyed all the changes made to GCOT and that you enjoy the staff, see you soon!
New Course Old Memories
I lived in Casdtroville, TX when they were building this course and was able to witness the original construction. This place has come a long way since then with course direction, course difficulty and overall appearance. The fairways are much softer than the hard dirt you had to hit off of previously and the greens are a bit more challenging. They are still a bit hard on the bounce but you can still stick the ball on a good green.
The staff was very attentive and accessible when you had a question or need. I would like different tee box signage that identifies where you are other than having to look at your GPS for yardage and identifiers but I am sure they are coming.
I would rate the overall experience an 8.5 out of 10 and I will be back there to play again.
Thanks for the nice 5 star review! We're so glad you enjoyed all the changes and its so cool that you were able to watch the reno in action! We hope to see you soon.
Great layout
Moved to the area a few months back after caddying for 12+ years in the northeast. Have played courses from Baltusrol and Winged Foot down to the local county course that you take a large group for the price more than the experience. And that is just it, the GCOT offers the environment that you long for out of the nice courses. Beverage cart service out on the course, a great food and drink menu in the restaurant add to the whole day experience that some courses are set up for, and others are not.
The course has a great layout following a links style. While playing in 100 degree heat isn't ideal (for the golfer or the turf), I can only imagine the playability as the weather cools and some rain can saturate the grounds.
If you want to play a quick round and pay $30, look elsewhere. If you want to immerse yourself in the game of golf for not only a round but also get food and watch a game - great spot.
Hello and thank you for the excellent review! It's great to hear that after playing on a variety of courses, that GCOT offers everything your looking for, from the golf to the food. We hope you keep coming back and enjoy the cool weather once it comes!
Grand Opening
Very nicely redone.
Todd and the new owners have it going on!
Look forward to getting back out and playing
Thanks for the nice review! Hope to see you soon!
Best Re-Branded course in town
This course has definitely re-branded itself and impressed me doing it. These are by far the best fairways in the city. The course plays as well as La Cantera at half the cost. The service was "over the top" with my needs, especially the membership guy. You can tell this staff has the customer as their priority. I'll be back this weekend!
Thank you so much for the 5 star review! We're so glad that you are impressed by all the renovations and your overall experience at GCOT! We hope our service and course conditions keep you coming back, see you this weekend!
Thank you for the review! We're glad you enjoyed your round and are even considering the player pass - it offers great rates year round! Hope to see you soon.
