The Golf Club Star Ranch
About
Hutto’s been put on the golf map now that the first-class Star Ranch has opened up on what was once a cattle ranch, boasting a unique collaborative effort from the Morrish brothers (Jay and Carter) and the Bechtol, Russell design firm.
The course sits on a hill and is built around a centralized lake, featuring the typical spectacular Hill Country topography highlighted by plush, undulating fairways and bleached white sand bunkers.
No. 2 is one of the most difficult holes and the first real challenge of your golf day. The 417-yard par 4 has more of an open feel than some of the other holes, but it’s length generally means a rather long approach, and the green is surrounded by several massive bunkers.
Getting there : From Austin, take I-35 north and exit Parmer Ln. Turn right and go east on Parmer to Dessau Rd. Turn left and go north on Dessau, which becomes FM 685. Go 5 miles past FM 1825 in Pflugerville and the club is on the left.

Not common of course, but this happened one round when the cows from the neighboring field decided the grass was greener on the other side. Photo submitted by GordonATX on 07/03/2013
Great course. “Good” condition
My second time playing this course. It’s a really good layout. Wide open fairways…lots of undulation…the only problem is they had just sanded the greens. They still rolled pretty true, but it affected the speed and reads. It’ll be back in shape in less than a week.
Great facility
Pro shop - always friendly, this time it was Danny.
Range - grass was in great shape and balls are easy.
And the course was in great shape overall and pace was right at 415 which for a weekend is decent.
Great course..reviews are accurate
We walk into the Star Ranch clubhouse, a clean and friendly environment. The staff were nice and very welcoming. They explained the facilities and sent us on our way to the range. One of the bestnpractice ranges you will find...balls are there so no hustle on that point. Grab a bucket and go hit! We didn't have time to try the putting greens. As for the course, it offers wide fairways and some very well maintained greens with challenging pin locations. The pace was a little slow that day as the winds were higher than normal.
Can't wait to go back!
Worth a drive.
Absolutely awesome time playing, tee to green in great shape for the winter/ dormant season. Cool layout. Forgiving fairways, practice facilities were awesome, I’ll definitely be back.
I am a member
Been a member for years. Great practice facility. Course is always in good shape..People WI run course know what they are doing.
Our new Austin course!
Loved this course. Very playable, fun and very well kept. Reasonable pricing. It's our new course in Austin that we will come back to often.
Great Course
Wide open, great driving range and chip/putt practice area. Nice carts. Overall great experience. I will be back.
great course, BUT...
Loved everything about the course in terms of layout, visual appeal, conditions and variety of holes.
However, the pace of play was excruciating. We were behind a FIVESOME who had no clue about golf etiquette. We waited on EVERY HOLE for them to finish putting. The marshal never said anything to them. I got the impression the group were regulars as they were chummy with the staff.
4 1/2 hours for a mid-week round of gold is too long, especially when at least 30 minutes were spent on the fairway watching these guys putt. Thankfully, the twosome paired with us were a lot of fun to play with.
I meet a friend periodically in Austin for golf and we chose Star Ranch this trip. We won't be picking Star Ranch again. Golf is hard enough when you can maintain a rhythm...it's darn near impossible when you have to constantly wait on a group who is holding up the entire course and there were several holes open ahead of them. What are marshals for if not to remedy that?
Great course, but...
I meet a friend periodically in Austin or Waco for golf. This trip we chose Austin and played Star Ranch on Tuesday 12/9 8:33 a.m.
The course is really nice. It was in great condition, was challenging, had an interesting layout, really good greens that rolled very true and was visually appealing. We were paired with a couple of guys who were a lot of fun to play with. So far, so good.
HOWEVER...the course placed a 5-some in front of us. These guys were the most inconsiderate golfers, totally devoid of etiquette. Our foursome waited on EVERY HOLE for at least 2-5 minutes for these guys to finish on the greens. At times, they'd look back at us, so you know they realized how much they were holding up the entire course. The foursomes behind us were also waiting on these guys. There were several holes open ahead of them. You'd think there was $5000 on every putt as slow as they were. I got the impression they were regulars or members as they were chummy with the staff. The marshal never said "boo" about their pace.
So, as much as I really liked the course, we will not pick Star Ranch anymore as our destination. 4 1/2 hours for a mid-week round of golf is too long, especially when we spent at least 1/2 an hour watching a FIVESOME putt.
No more for me.
PS: this would have been a five star review if the course paid any attention to pace of play.
excellent course conditions
Two thumbs up on all aspect of the course and staff. Four thumbs up if I had two more hands.
