Waterview Golf Club

About
Rowlett’s first course has been laid out over a flat range of pasture, supplemented by 15 acres of lakes and over 1,000 new trees. Designed to be hacker friendly, the lack of mature trees provide an especially generous look and feel, tempting the mid-level handicapper to tee it up from the 7,191 yard tips and go long off the tee. Bent greens are the highlight of the round here–they roll true and provide solid opportunities to snake in a few long putts.
Getting there : Off of I-30 exit Dalrock Rd. and drive north through Hwy. 66. A half-mile past 66 veer left on Princeton, which dead-ends at Liberty Grove. Turn right into the Waterview division and take Waterview Pkwy. to the clubhouse

Great greens
The greens here are usually terrible. They are now some of the best around right now. Fast and true. The fairways have always needed some love but play it up and enjoy the greens.
Rough Day for Golf
Standing water all over the course, slanted tee boxes, and awful pace of play. There was a 30 minute delay to tee off and they ran out of carts. Booked a 1:20 tee time to only get through 13 holes…
All the rain
Despite it being winter in Texas and all the rain that poured down the day before, the course was still very playable. Most of the teeboxes need a better rotation and TLC as they are getting pretty torn up. The fairways were in good shape and all bunkers were really good. The greens were firm and fast, rolled true and were definitely more of a test due to speed and amount of break.
Sunday Funday
Looked around for a last-minute tee time and saw Waterview had plenty. We tee'd off @ 1:00 pm and we're told we were the last group scheduled. It was just two of us, and we were in no hurry, so the foursome in front of us were not an issue on this day.
We had played this course recently, so knew what to expect. Tee boxes are in pretty rough shape. Mostly sand with some grass in areas. Fairways are okay. Not much sand underneath the turf. Mainly black dirt. Rough is what it says, 'rough'. You can still see the remanence of the large cracks from this past summer, both in the rough and in parts of the fairways. Pretty rough ride in the cart. Not a lot that they can do about it really. It has to do with the type of land the course is built on. Greens are the treat at Waterview. Roll really well and quick like I like 'em!
Price point isn't bad for being in town. Pace of play is usually a pain, but lately we've been pretty lucky. Will play it again for sure.
Water your course
The greens and tee boxes were decent but the fairways and rough were more than rough. There are huge cracks in the dirt from dehydration. Also broad leaf weeds that should be fairly easy to control were everywhere. Pace of play was terrible. We were over 1.5 hours before we teed off on 4. Had to call the clubhouse to have them correct pace. They did correct this issue but we barely finished the round. Over 5 hour round it tough.
Cool Track
Not much fairway off the tee, so hit it straight. Greens are in great shape and certainly challenging with tons of movement. I like this course.
Waterview in Great Shape
I don't do reviews generally but the conditions at Waterview have changed so much I felt obligated. I play Waterview 2-4 times per year and the greens are generally in poor shape. When we played this time I could not believe the conditions of the greens. They were perfect and fast; they have never been close to this good in the history of the course. They must have a new head greenskeeper.
Waterview GC
Course was in pretty good condition. Greens were fast. Got stuck behind a couple of slow groups. Unfortunately the driving range was closed this week so that sucked.
Update on conditions
I had not been to Waterview in a couple of years. The course was generally known to be in rough shape so I didn't make the trek to Rowlett in the last 4-5 years.
First, let me say this...the Greens were FANTASTIC. The superintendent must have worked some miracles. They were smooth, true, fast (maybe 11), and still have the undulations. They were pretty difficult to 2-putt from outside 30 feet. They were the best greens on a muni/public layout that I have played this year. Pretty dang impressive.
The rest: Bunkers were in pretty good shape. Tees were good. The course is obviously still coming back as fairways were probably just OK and the summer drought has the rough and less-maintained areas full of weeds, cracks, mud, and roots. Hopefully they can improve these areas the way they did the greens and tees.
I have always enjoyed the layout here. Fairways rolled well and there are good sightlines off most tees. Pace was good (4:14) for a Sunday morning in gorgeous weather. Staff was friendly to talk to and if you like dogs like me, there are several backyards where they come to greet you if you hit it near them!
The greens were the star of the show. If any good players want a challenge and care about speed and lines, go play these 18.
