Really make you work you short game
I really enjoyed playing the Harvey penick GC. I am a 28HC and this little course maked me work on all of my problem areas, short irons, pitching and putting. Another thing I liked was it seemed like the staff had water on just about every hole. I will deffienatly be back now seeing the potential of how much I could advance on a course that make you work harder where your lacking. Great staff also, they were very nice and inviting.
Beginner's paradise
This course is not exactly fancy but everyone is very friendly. If you are a beginner, this is one of the few places you can play without more serious players complaining about your pace. It's only 9 holes so it's great for getting a quick few holes in after work.
The cart path could be nicer but for the price, it's a pretty course.
This course reminds me of the par-3 course I used to play growing up in San Antonio. It's short but challenging, especially if you land in the rough.
The rough is thick, making it difficult to finesse your way through mistakes. This course is rough around the edges - dirt and rock cart paths and no maintenance beyond the boundaries of each hole, but it's walkable and fun to play, especially for the price.
course was fun; not too difficult; but not too easy either.
Truly enjoyed course; staff was very helpful and friendly. The course was in great shape; fairway, greens, and tee boxes were well maintained. Only negative; cart trail needs paved, very muddy from a little rain.
Greens are great
Very challenging to be a short course! Staff is great, greens are well maintained!
Great value and good shape
Played with my 11 yr old (beginner) and we had a great time (not rushed). Ideal for a beginner. Greens in very good shape. Tees and fairways all have grass and in good shape (amazing in the current drought). Very good value.
Great bang for your buck, especially when/if GolfNow has any deals going on - I paid $17 for nine holes and got my cart fee and range balls included.
Really impressed with the course for what it costs and for the part of town. Fairways and greens were in good condition (slow greens, though) and the staff was friendly.
Only major suggestion - need better signage, both in terms of getting to the golf campus and from hole to hole.
Nine, par 3 and 4 hole course good for practice.
The course is managed by the YMCA and is mostly par 3's. The greens are in good shape with rough fairways. I use the course for practice because of the cheap fees.
Short and Sweet
I played this course for the first time the other day and it was an enjoyable experience. The first tee has a great look and feel to it, and is maintained throughout the 9-hole course. However, I didn't realize this was a 9-holer when I teed off, and was slightly disappointed when I made the turn and I was back at the 1st tee. There is a driving range and a large chip/putt area to warm up, and the staff is very kind. Play this course for a fun and short experience (par 60 for 18), and to get some work on some shots you don't practice too often [bunkers on hills, clearing ~50 yard partitions, and short-game overall].
this course is great for practie
really got to practice my irons cant hit drivers on course as there is no holes long enough to
Great little training course
Great little training facility which will help the newest player learn the game without being intimidated by the course. For the accomplished player can dial in their short game and course management skills.
Can't beat it for the price
$9 for range balls and 18 holes of play with a cart? Try to find a better value, I dare you.
The greens were in a bit of rough shape a few weeks back, but they are looking a lot better now. Also, they have manicured some really nice false fronts to the greens on a few holes and it looks really good.
If you're just starting out, this is the perfect place to play.
Hard to train on a course in such bad condition
True, it was a low price. But half the greens are basically collection of clumps of grass, the fairways were in worse condition than an average yard and the rest was just frustrating.
I'll never play there again
Fun course for all skill levels
This is the first time I/my family have played this course and we enjoyed it. With four sets of tee boxes, you can tailor the game to fit the skill level of each player. I wouldn't say it's a well manicured course (in fact a few greens were in pretty bad shape) but it seems to be fairly well taken care of.
This course is also the home of The First Tee-Austin, so your fees help to support a great program.
It was good for $9
The staff was very friendly. I knew going into it that this was a 9 hole course played twice and that was ok. What I didn't know was that this was a glorified pitch and putt. I was shocked to learn that of the 9 holes, 6 of them were par 3's and the other 3 were par 4's. Yup, no par 5's. Of the three par 4's you can only use driver on one (have to lay up before the creek on the other 2). The greens were not good at all, weeds on the greens made each putt look like popcorn was rolling to the hole. I know the point of this course is to get kids started playing golf and it is PERFECT for that. I think that is absolutely great and I love that they are doing that.
Wonderful course for the money
Glad to see the "Y" was able to put such a beautiful piece of property to such good use.
Nice, laid back, 9 hole course
I have been wanting to get back into golf for a long time after not playing for 4yrs. This course is perfect for tuning up the game. No par 5s and some short par 3s but it was exactly what I needed and you can't beat the price.
Bad day on course, don't go
Get there 10 minutes early due to traffic, but cashier with TERRIBLE attitude doesn't care, cancels our tee time. Gives us attitude throughout the whole time on trying to get a new tee time, forces us to walk with five people ( fifth person was willing to pay money, which is saying no to more money but it could hold up people, but I'll get to that later), on a 9 hole tee time, which I saw online that the tee time was 18 hole w/ golf carts so he practically lied to us, then he says we have to hurry because people would be right behind us, but there is no one for 30 minutes behind us, another lie. I'd really like that guy fired for TERRIBLE service and what other people before me had to go through him feel, that or I'd like to ruin his day just like he did to me on my golf day. Oh and the greens are in terrible shape.
The worst greens I have ever seen. Unplayable.
This is the home course for the First Tee of Austin. They are doing an injustice teaching the kids to play here with greens like this.
