Cowan Creek Golf Course
About
Cowan Creek Golf Course is the newest of three courses that are part of Del Webb's Sun City retirement community. Cowan Creek has a resort-style layout with a front nine that plays through the community, with the homes set well back from the fairways, and a back nine that stretches across the scenic Hill Country landscape. The back nine is slightly tougher than the front. Although the golf course is wide-open there are some mesquite trees and cacti that add some scenery throughout. The layout features large landing areas, forgiving fairways, and there are few tricks and hazards, all of which make it an approachable course for beginners. There are some challenges though that will appeal to more experienced players including a few blind shots, elevated greens and tees, and some forced carries. Throughout Cowan Creek Golf Course, golfers will find some interesting risk-reward opportunities.

Good course
Conditions of the course are really good. Even though the greens had been punched they still rolled pretty well.
The only drawback is the lack of a clubhouse for food at the turn. They only have vending machines.
It is a huge plus that range balls are included in the price.
very good experience
course was closed due to a heavy rainshower that passed by 30 minutes before my tee time .
luckily they have three courses at sun city and the friendly staff from the pro shop called the other courses and was able to get me and other players out on another course .
Excellent course for a low fare.
I live in South Austin, and I will make the trip to Sun City, Texas, to play a round at Cowan Creek. The course is in excellent condition every time I have played a round there, and for a price that is considered a 'steal'.
Fun course, very challenging
Staff was very friendly and helpful. The course was in super shape. The price was very fair for the conditions of the course. Vending machines only for sodas, water and snacks
Wide Fairways
Enjoyed playing Cowan Creek, conditions of tee boxes, fairways, and greens was all fantastic. Extremely playable off the tee with wide fairways and they had a little cushion to allow for easier iron shots vs some courses that have very tight lies.
One item to note, there is no food/beverage service but they allow you to bring your own and they provide the ice which is a nice perk as long as you know that upfront you will be good.
Definitely will play again.
Fun Course
Fantastic conditions, teeboxes, fairways, greens and even the rough was all excellent. Fairway grass had just enough length to allow your club to get underneath the ball. Fun layout and design too. Only disappointmentioned or maybe just strange was no beverage or food service, although they allow you to bring your own which maybe isn't a bad thing. Overall, worth the drive to play. Will play again.
Good Value
Course in great condition played round in 3 hours during weekday. Ice available on several holes was a nice touch. Will definitely be back.
Play The Other Two
Weak sister of three courses at Sun City. We played White Wing and CC in one day on pro shop advice the recent rains had adversely affected Legacy Hills . This course a boring routing through lesser neighborhood . Fairways and greens not nearly as nice as WW . Drove past Legacy Hills and it is more mature , tree-lined . Will go back to play it . If you want to play 36 , leave out CC. None of three courses is walkable .
Great Course
Having played this course, I have now played all three Sun City courses and I would definitely recommend any of the three. All of these courses are very nice and you can play them for a very reasonable price and they are very fun to play.
Expect slower play
This course is part of the Sun City Community complex of 3 golf courses which are regularly played by the residents.
Winter Course Maintenance Needed!
Having played the courses at Sun City many times, we worked out way back to Cowan after a great deal at GolfNow. Check in was easy, the tiny bucket for "free" driving range balls was given, and we were on our way.
The driving range is in good shape, and is policed up regularly by the staff.
We got to the first tee and immediately noticed that instead of trying to maintain a winter grass on the tee boxes, they opted just to paint them a obvious shade of dark green. This is in contrast to the completely dead and brown grass surrounding, and that includes the entire fairways.
Compared to other courses in the Austin area, and most notably Lago Vista where we golfed last week, they're just letting it go until springtime.
The greens themselves are irregular, bumpy, and pretty much dead themselves. This made little ridges that were difficult to putt on.
I do have to give the course some congratulations on using the winter to do some digging and install additional drainage piping.
Would I golf here again? Yes, but not until late spring when the quality improves.
great course, slow golf
I love this course. The staff is great, the only negative is the locals do not play ready golf, and won't let you play through. On a weekend, expect 3hrs for 7 holes. I will play this again, just at an off time.
Slow Play
Groups of 2 and 3 ahead of us would not let us play through and there was no course Marshall to enforce slow play , took 4 hrs to play 12 holes , not happy
Great Day of Golf
We are moving to Sun City (Georgetown, TX) in one month, so we wanted to play the Cowen Creek golf course since we will live near it. The course is far superior to the one we had been playing in Austin. The greens were huge in comparison, it had large, smooth golf car paths, and while we had to do some waiting on the tees, the pace of play was only 2 hours for 9 holes. We will have to get used to the huge sand traps, but were delighted with the quality of sand in them.
Fun course
it was lots of fun to play Cowan Creek The course is well kept and the greens were fast.
I'll play there again
This is a great course
Had a great time playing this course....would definitely be coming back.
Good time at Cowan Creek
The course is in great condition. The pace of play was slow. It is frustrating to wait on every shot, but what can one expect on a nice Sunday afternoon.
Huge, but challenging greens!
I've played White Wing and Legacy Hills at least 100 times each and hadn't played Cowan Creek yet. Figured I'd finally give it a whirl. I didn't play well, but it wasn't the courses fault. The tee boxes needed to be mowed, but it's that time of year where the grass is changing to winter rye and I understand. The greens were the most difficult part of the round. They were very challenging to read, fast, but rolled true. The fairways were a bit thin on the grass in some places and there were a few areas of GUR, clearly marked. A few holes had blind shots where I didn't really know how to play them. Now that I played the course, I'll have a better idea of course management and will likely shoot better the next time around. I played from the gold tees, which made tee shot placement very important. The round was played in 3:40 minutes and would've been faster had the twosome in front of us played ready golf. A lot of wildlife to admire while waiting to make my next shot. I don't see this course as walker friendly, unless you're young and fit, as there is a lot of distance between greens and the next set of tee boxes. The bunkers are the best in the area, unfortunately I discovered this first hand.
Cowen Creek review
Course was in great shape and the greens were fast and true. Play was a little slow.
Beware the Shotgun
I love playing here, great golf course, practice area, value and now that the late summer aeration has recovered, the greens roll very well.
Apparently there was a college tournament to be played the following day, so they had a 1:00 shotgun start, with all of the college players, and the open holes were sold to the public. Round took 4 3/4 hours. this is not the first time I've had this happen at this course.
Bunkers have large amounts of very fine grand sand and are very penal. Bermuda rough makes finding balls just off the fairway, or the greens difficult to find.
I wish they had drinking water on more than two holes per side.
