The course was in good shape
Even though the course was hit with severe weather and floods less than two months ago fairway is the rough and the greens were in great shape
Fairways were really nice, the greens looked like they had been punched a couple weeks ago but we’re still not bad. A couple of holes had some burnt out/dead areas around the green.
Tot hill farm
Heard a bit about the course prior to playing, like you better drink a lot to ease the pain. The first hole gets you off jump street. You just have to remember that Strantz puts these visual things to intimidate you. There usually room just in the other side of the trouble. Very deceptive. Not terribly long. Crazy lies though test your game. That was probably the toughest part of it.
Course was in good shape the day after a bad storm. Greens were good speed and receptive.
Interesting golf course!
Cart paths need work, ball washers about non-existent and the 2 that were out had stagnant water. Two water jugs but would not drink the water.
Really fun yet very challenging
Bring some extra balls just in case but the course is a blast if you play decent golf. New golfers and people with bad attitudes may not have a good time. I’m a 13 handicap and shot a little over that on the second day first day was higher since I haven’t played there in many years. The course is very fair for the most part but some brutal very fast crowned greens that were really fun and memorable. I live in Myrtle Beach so I have a lot of golf available but will go back yearly from now on as it was really fun and visually very appealing with undulations and rock formations everywhere.
Hidden Gem
This is a fun course. By the same designer as Tobacco Road. Loved the elevation changes and the use of terrain. The course was in great shape for summer. The bent grass greens were in excellent shape.
Course in need of TLC
Luckily I got this round for a hot deal, which made me a little more at ease with the rate, but I would not play full price to play this course anytime soon.
Upon arrival, I was told that the bridge to the No. 16 green was washed out on Tuesday due to flash floods after 7 inches of rain. Totally understandable. Also, No. 12 was converted to a par 3 because of the inclement weather earlier in the week. Stuff happens. But there were some spots on the greens and fairways that were burnt our or in poor condition. Additionally, a lot of the cart paths were in poor shape or nonexistent. This course has so much potential so hopefully the bad weather earlier in the week is a blessing in disguise and the course can get fixed up to what Mike Strantz carved out a few decades ago.
Great Course
Always a fun time playing Tot!! Course conditions from tee to green are GREAT!! Thanks for doing it like it should be done. #16 is closed due to a recent bridge collapse, but they are working on it! One of my favorite courses!!!!
Possibly Best Layout in Charlotte/Greensboro area
This course is visually intimidating and amazing. A mike strantz design (Tobacco rd/Caledonia). Frankly I thought this course was more fun than Caledonia albeit not as well maintained. If you’re good you have to put yourself to the test here. Insane layouts and crazy green undulations. Highly recommend playing with someone who’s played or getting the booklet. A must must must play and looking forward to being back
Stunner!
First time playing this course and I was truly blown away on each hole I played. Gorgeous views, challenging shots, fun greens, lush fairways. It has it all! I played the ball down and didn’t have a problem with the exception of a few areas, but I paid $16 to play here.... that’s absurd. It’s easily a $60-$70 course and I’m surprised it’s not. The greens were a touch slow for me, but they rolled very true, so I can’t complain. My only complaint I have about the course is the cart paths.. god they are rough, but other than that, this is an absolute must play. Also, do yourself a favor and pay the $5 for the yardage book, you’ll need it!
Great course but pace of play slow
Seem like there were locals that teed of early and made the back three hours. On the last two holes we had 6 groups and lead group had five in it. Course was in great condition and a couple pin positions were borderline.
Hidden Gem
If you're taking a golf trip to the Pinehurst area, this course is a must play. Tot Hill will be the most fun you have on the trip... if you're okay with losing some balls and/or playing a scramble. Be ready for plenty of blind shots and undulating greens. The phrase "this is my favorite golf course" was uttered from my mouth on each of the first 9 holes. At 25% the price of Strantz's Tobacco Road, this course is really tough to beat money wise. Don't let the price throw you off though, this was a highlight of the trip.
Visually Intimidating
This is the 5th Mike Strantz designed course I've played and although nicely set into the hillsides, it is not the most scenic of his designs. It is, however, the most visually intimidating and demanding I've played. The majority of the tee shots are downhill to areas of varying degrees of exposure, meaning there are places you better not hit it and many you can't see. BUY THE YARDAGE BOOK, spend $5 in the pro shop and you'll probably save a sleeve of balls. If you have a rangefinder USE IT for every shot. The approach shots are often uphill, sometimes requiring two clubs more than "flat" yardage, often to oddly shaped and tiered greens. This isn't a hit it hard, find it and hit it again course and you'll have to properly plan to post a decent score based on your abilities. If you're really long with your irons feel free to go to the back tees, if not and you're a straight shooting 5-10 Hcp but short, play the whites and try to enjoy the round. Oh, do not attempt to play without others eyes watching your shots or you're guaranteed to lose several balls, seemingly hit in the center of the fairway. It happened to me on the par 5 16th & although my eyesight isn't what it once was, I know where the ball was flying, about where it landed and Lewis and Clark couldn't find it with the help of Sacagawea. : )
Fun
This is a great course ...so fun. Mike Strantz was a great course designer I love this course the more I play it Not as in good shape as Tobacco Road or Caledonia but great bang for your buck and a must play for Strantz fans ! Enjoy the ride
