Picture perfect day at Spanos Photo submitted by Tem23powtfgj on 07/06/2013
Walking fivesomes (two groups) at 8am on a Sunday morning? No wonder the round took over 5 1/2 hours.
Most of us teeing it up early Sunday morning do so because we have an afternoon agenda. A 4 hour round leaves us the bulk of the day remaining. 5/1/2 (being kind) hours is just too painful. We will try this track again given the course conditions, great range, and friendly staff. A Marshall or two speeding up play and limiting walking fivsomes to early afternoon tee times will keep us returning on a regular basis.
To Slow
I love this course but play was to slow. It took 5 1/2 hours to play 18 holes.
Really nice course...wish there was a 4.5 rating!
Played on a blustery, semi-rainy day, and very few other golfers out there...so pace of play was fast. Greens were HARD, slopey and fast...very difficult to hold on approaches. Its a beautiful course with lots of water hazard. Course was in great shape, except for some of the traps: I was in one which was so thin I had to hit a pitch shot rather than a true sand shot; the only other trap I was in was in good shape.
Look forward to playing this one again!
Very enjoyable course
Played on a relatively cool and windy Friday afternoon (12:16 tee-time). First time at the course and was very impressed with the courteous staff, nice clean clubhouse, and decently supplied pro-shop. Showed up as a single and was paired with a friendly twosome with previous course experience who offered some much needed advice on the few blind tee-shots. I found the course challenging, but fair; especially with the several water hazards sporting thick vegetation along the banks. Thankfully, they're in the process of removing some of this vegetation which I feel better enhances the visual challenges these water hazards offer.
Tee boxes, fairways, bunkers and greens were in good to excellent shape for this time of year and maintenance workers were plentiful out on the course. Starter on hole one to pace groups going out and an active course marshal who we came across no less than 5 times throughout the day. Our group faced minimal delays and the marshal was very helpful in letting us know she was doing her best to move things along.
Overall I definitely recommend this course and look forward to my next round there!
Pace of play is horrendous
Having a Marshal(s) who enforces the pace of play would be make the course much more enjoyable.
Challenging but FUN
This was the first time I have played The Reserve in over fifteen years (out of the area for about 12 years) but throughly my round. The course was in great condition, fast undulating greens, with a few thin areas on some of the fairways. Many fairway and green side bunkers with water that comes into play on many holes. A little course knowledge would have been helpful. We had a great mid-round lunch in the clubhouse. We'll be back with a few extra balls and a better feel for the course.
This course was worth the drive
From the bay area and made the trek to check out the tournament possibilities for this course. We were impressed, both the with course and the rates. Fairway bunkers could use some work as they are dry and crusty (read chip outs) but they are not really any worse that any other mid-range California course. Greens were good speed and rolled true. Layout was very good with some challenging holes especially when the wind picks up. Superintendent told us the management would be adding sand to the green side bunkers this year but it is really not a deal breaker. The practice facility and the rates for the practice facility make me wish I lived in the area.
All in all, compared against all the other Bay Area courses I have played in this price range, this one rates up there in the top 10.
Hot in Stockton
OK, so we were late for our tee time(our playing partners got lost), but the staff took great care of us and were able to work us into the schedule on a very warm day. The course was in great condition and the greens were very good even though the weather has been over 100F for the past two weeks. The course was challenging but not unplayable for us 60+ folks who play from the white tees.
Excellent course for all golfers
I've played The Reserve many times over the last 15 years, and always have a good experience. Nice open spaces layout, well kept, but with enough trouble to challenge everyone.
Very professional and friendly staff, too.
Saturday at the Reserve
The course was in excellent shape; greens were quick, sand was great, fairways were firm and roll out on drives was very good. Layout is excellent, love playing combo tee's which make the course more challenging for intermediate to better players and keeps a good pace of play. Love it there
Spanos
I think I got extremely lucky. I was in beautiful Stockton Ca. on business and this course was recommended by a local.
Excellent condition through out. Fairways were in good shape and the greens were very good. There were legitimate penalties if you sprayed from the wide fairways.
Only eal negative was the sand traps were hard and need more sand.
Spanos Reserve
This course was good. Little pricey.
Windy day at the reserve
Overall in good condition greens pretty fast fairways in good condition the starter let us go off the back as a twosome so we didn't have to wait at all played in 3 hours
Great course
Great course!!! Would recommend to anyone who loves golf!!!
We've received a lot of requests for half-star ratings and I agree. Hope to add soon.
