The Masters Course at Lionhead Golf & Country Club is ideal for golfers who don't feel they are prepared to take on the demanding Legends Course at the club, which has been ranked as one of the toughest courses in North America. The Masters layout is similar to golf courses in Florida, with unique bunkers and scenic ponds that meld perfectly with the rolling hills and wetlands that dot the scenic landscape. Its more traditional layout is considered the kinder and gentler of the two golf courses at Lionhead Golf & Country Club, but there are still a fair amount of challenges. The Masters course requires several long carries over water, particularly on the 16th. This infamous par 5 features a green surrounded by water.

Great facility. Huge difference between 9's as to green speed.

We were started on the back 9 (which has more hazards and is more difficult) with greens that appeared to be running around 11. After 4 or 5 holes (during which we were right on the back of the group in front of us) we were asked to speed up as there was a tournament scheduled for 1:30. I told the marshal we were right behind the group in front of us-his response was that he told them to speed up as well. At this point we were playing on a 4 hour pace-which is what we finished at. It seems dumb to be rushing us when we were on schedule!!!
There was a substantial speed difference in the speed of the greens between our front and back. It caused us no end of frustration to leave putts short that would have gone past the hole on the other 9. Other than that, a great course and a lot of fun playing it.

Could've been better; would've expected more if I paid full price!

I'm giving this course a 4/5. I paid a pretty good price on Golfnow but had I paid regular price ($150 I believe, as per the Kaneff website), I would've felt pretty ripped off! I've played National Pines once, which I believe is a $100 course and I recall that course's layout and conditions being a lot better than this one's!

Greens were suspect, the rough was pretty rough, and conditions weren't 'pristine' at all! Some holes were pretty memorable, hence my 4/5 (no boring holes to speak of). It's my understanding that Lionhead's 'Legends' course is much better than Masters so maybe had I played that one, my review would've been much better.

A bit Noisy from the machine

Our round was at 8:00 am - a lot of machines on the course at that time cutting grass - and they would not stop between shots.

Slow, slow and slow. Nice course though.

The course was nice. The greens didn't have much break in them which messed me up after playing a "nicer" course where the greens had much more subtlety in their breaks. The worst problem was the pace of play. Often we would arrive at the next tee box and there would be a group ahead of us still on the tee! At one hole, there were 4 groups on the tee. Needless to say, it was quite a long round of golf on Sunday morning which took us well into the afternoon.

In consistencies present an additional couree challenge.

First time playing the Masters course. Played Legends last fall. I don't thing I would ever play either of the courses full price but the golfnow deal was great. That was decent value but still on the high side of my price point.

The course itself is for most par asthetically pleasing to the eye. All the greens were consistent, reasonably paced (fast) and rolling true. Few minor areas with unrepaired divots. The majority of greens are defended with elevation in addition to sand and grass bunkers. Fairways are laid out so when you look out, they inspire fear but they are very fair - landing areas are more than reasonable but the safety of them aren't readily apparent at first glance unleass you've played the course before. The back nine is slightly shorter but is a little mre complex due to t the many doglegs.

What I didn't like was the back nine rough was longer than the front and with the wind in play made for a more difficult time if one ever found themselves in the rough.

Don't know if I could play it ever at their retail rate but as a treat I'd definitely expect to play both courses again through golf now

Public course with a Private course feel.

We were the first group out for the day.
The golf was great despite the fact the area had been hit with a lot of rain during the week, the course was in great shape.
The bunkers had not been raked yet so were very wet but other than that the course was in great shape.
Beverages and food were not available until we had completed 9 holes.
Will definitely be back.

Great layout, played there for years. Challenging holes, you have to stay in the fairway, if you are on the wrong side, you could have a problem

A couple of things bug me. I can understand that they do not want the carts out during tournaments, but everyday golfers should be able to take carts to their cars to load their clubs etc and drive to the driving range. i hate having to carry my clubs with me when i want to go and practise. The other thing that i find odd is that they do not have GPS in their carts. Its hard to find a course these days that dont. if cost is a factor, they should give you the option of renting one, if asked. Yesterday was hot and dry and they had "cart path" rules only, it was not warranted. Too many folks guarding carts at the pro shop, but no marshalls on the course to speed up play. Having said that, I still love the course.

Great course with scenic views and friendly staff!

Everything was perfect, except that it took 5 and a half hours to complete the round, due to delays and a wait at every hole. Not up to the usual Lionhead standards.

The Masters is about course management and proper club selection from tee to green - challenges you to consider alternatives to "grip it and rip it".

This was the first time in over 20 years that I've played either of the Lionhead courses. My overall experience was good to very good and now that I've been re-acquainted with the facility, I will play here again. The only downside to the day was the 5 hours and 20 minutes it took to get around, due to the volume of players. Some of the greens were showing the effects of the heavy traffic of the holiday afternoon (especially on the back nine) however in general, we found the course to be holding up very well. Amazing pro shop, all of the staff that we encountered were very friendly, and the course marshals were doing their best to keep the pace moving. Considering the numbers of players on the course, it could have been a lot worse if not for their efforts. I would recommend this course to others.

Overpriced

This is a great course. It deserves all the talk it gets in the area of quality and challenge. It's a great course with a lot of extremely difficult shots and holes. The greens were super quick in mid-May and the bunkers were all loose and raked. However, I don't think it is worth the money and you will get an equally challenging experience and condition with some other less expensive courses.

Mish mash of holes every which way.

Fun if you like lots of cart riding. Some really really great holes that are fun and challenging. Cart was filthy with spilled coffee on cup holders and complimentary tees and the battery was low.

There are really only three concerns.....

1) It is odd that they will not allow you to bring your cart over to the range.

2) It is especially odd that the range fee is not included. You don't usually have to pay for a bucket of balls when playing a top-notch course.

3) Do you HAVE to take a cart? I didn't see any pullcarts available for those of us who prefer to walk.

This course is overpriced

Lionhead is an ok golf course that charges for green fees as if they are a top flight/top notch golf club. It is an ok golf course but it is way overpriced. I will not be returning anytime soon. If its booked as a hot deal for for around $50 that is a fair price in my opinion but it is not worth a dollar over that and they try to charge double that in most time slots.... good golf course but terrible value in my opinion

Course was in good shape

Played with Oscar, Frank and Walt. Beautiful sunny day, 2nd game of the year since we arrived home on April 5th. Greens were a little slow, however fairways were in good shape this early in the season. Foursome in front of us were a little slow and playing the "gold tees". Some men have not learned to play within their limitations. All in all met some new friends and really enjoyed the course.

This course is priced too high - Only thanks to GolfNow was it average value for money.

The course has a great layout but the amount of un-repaired divots and plug marks on the greens was a huge dissappontment. The tees were shabby. Play was very slow and despite there being plently of dismissive staff in red shirts at the clubhouse - there was no Marshall on duty. With a rack-rate of $105 a lot more was expected. GolfNow rate of $42 was an excellent discount but only represents average value when you consider the experience.
